anyone ever seen these
« on: Sep 29, 2018, 05:28 PM »
Has anyone ever used these tip-ups. They stand up on the ice with ice shavings packed around them.

Nope. I like the paint scheme on the spools. You can see 'em turning from a distance. Did the same thing with the spools on my Windlass.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

the conditions have to be right to use them. very cold weather, snow on top of the ice and thick ice helps. they are used with live bait. you have to set the weight  juuuuust riiiiiiiight so it tips up with little resistance when the fish hits. origin of the name "tip up" i believe. you do this by making a loop in the line or putting a ring in it then hang it on a little nail in the end. most run several of them in a line like 50 yards long. they work good when the fish are scattered and you have 2-3 people to run them. i live on lake champlain, i dont use them.

Those look a lot like the old tip ups my Grampa and my Dad used. They were made out of umbrella ribs with lead weights that would slid on them. I still use them they work very well.
