i drove around Sturbridge on Sunday. There were lots of guys fishing off Champeau rd which seemed nuts. I checked the thickness near the parking lot and found 3" ever where i chopped. I know the area is not very deep but 3" is too sketchy for me. I also saw a bunch of guys fishing at Holland pond in the weedy cove. I checked ice near the beach on bridge pond rd and it was only 2.5 inches. i'd love to break out the gear too but i don't like to swim in the winter.

Always trust your gut...I mean spud.  3" of ice can be very good, very bad and everything in between, all dependant on a considerable number of variables.

For example...I fished a lake last year that was rising while I was on the ice.  Easy to hop onto the in the am despite water covering the edges...by afternoon I couldnt jump to shore...and broke through trying to figure out how to plank off.  (It sucked)
