Near world record " catch and release" lake trout?  Hard to release them when you gaff it through the gills/tongue and then hang it.   If it went back it just sunk.  I guess its still catch and release.  But more likely catch and release dead.

Nice fish though.

In the forum link that brint posted, one of the last posts said it was kept.

That would be fun through the ice.  I've caught some in that size range but only on open water, with a heavy rod and 50lb spiderwire and 100lb leader.  :P
Early to bed...early to rise...fish all day...make up lies.

No kidding, not much sense in releasing it after you gaff it and then drag it around the ice for a while. If they released it it i would think the chance of it living is right around nil. Nice wall hanger though.

Ok, I've bit my tongue long enough, first thing, this was not caught in SK, a simple view of the news website it comes from would show you it was caught in NY State, most likely on a Great Lake. Second in the article it references the "catch and realease record" it DOES NOT say this fish was released, in fact at the end of the article it says "No word on if this fish was kept or released" so everyone cool your titts and take some time to read the article, I'm not in favour of a gaff but if the guy wanted to gaff and keep that trophy fish who are any of us to fault him. Chill out. End rant.

Well said DBK81, it seems on this site anytime there is a pic or vid of a big fish you hear more people complaints than compliments, no can ever just say nice fish! with out saying how they would of handled it better.

I am gonna take the other road and say that he probably wasn't stupid enough to release that fish. Let's give him a little credit.

If you go to the 4 minute mark, you can see how these guys handle a Monster Pike and release it.

They figure that they caught this one twice in 2 days.

Fishing is good for your Mind, Body and Soul.
Actually catching a fish or two is a nice by product of a day well spent.

The next time that you don't feel like going into work, don't give your Boss any excuses (Hes heard them all), just say, "I'm going fishing, wanna come".

Some things we learned from Steve:
They did keep the fish, but donated it to a Canadian research facility.
It was estimated at around 40 pounds
His video has since gone viral with every country in the world seeing it, and as of Friday a majority of them were from Maine

NEWS???

Always willing to try something new.
