If I found someone in my shack and esp if the lock is broke off they would be sitting possibly with their hands on their head    not fishing awaiting the wardens  sherrif or state police arrival and charges would be placed for breaking and entering and arrested    thats my personal property

Honestly I think with ice fishing if you pick a spot for the winter, its almost first come first serve. I have fished the relative same area of Blackstrap for 7 winters and I dont get upset if someone is where I wanted to be. Ice Fishing shouldnt be a nasty, vengeful sport where some think that you took their "spot". The lakes are big, fish swim all over.

Honestly, I would have agreed with this years ago but now it's getting ridiculous. I can understand that people make towns along access points onto the lake for ease of access and decent fishing but when it comes to specific spots in the middle of the lake and people are fishing so close to you that your or fish or their fish tangles with your line thats too close. To me a 50ft minimum distance is fine unless you feel comfortable that their fishing antics are not going to affect your enjoyable day on the ice. This is why a hot fishing lake during a derby day can produce a dozen fish for 500 fisherman.

Easy now Big Gunner. We're talking about fishing here. The best part of life. The thing we do to get away from the crap that assaults us from all sides daily. The peaceful part.
The reason you need a shack in the first place.
I think you missed the broken lock part? If someone broke my lock and was in my shanty there would be problems! If my shanty was unlocked and I found someone in it I would just ask them to leave. The lock means stay out or else! What is peaceful about someone breaking your stuff?

Maine guy and Michiana guy. Please back up a little and read the whole thread. You really should become more informed on the topic before you 'break-in' and say nonsense about what is indeed an issue to be discussed, as mentioned, by reasonable men. No one is talking about vandals. I could maybe see you getting touchy if I had labelled it 'Squatter's Rights' vs the 'Right to Bear Arms'.
I believe that it has been acknowleged that a locked shack means keep yer distance(or else) but I was asking for a better answer, if you care to read back, than "because I'll shoot you".
I did not break in anything! If you back up and read the posts you will see that I was on the first four posts and was acknowledging the fact that eyefriendly had trouble with vandals and such. Even resorted to burning his shack on the spot.

And for your information,,,,, A BROKEN LOCK is vandalism! Unless you think Law enforcement is unreasonable.

I just want to make sure you caught the bit about the snow, Aqua.  The wind blows it around so a circle of drifts forms around the shack a little distance away and then I come along and drill a hole or 2 right behind the shack so I can fish out of the wind and next time you come out you spend half your day chopping it out.  As for locked/unlocked the problem we had wasn't necessarily with strangers: our friends were just as bad.  They'd drive out, make a mess, burn all our firewood, (never mind that I had to drag it all out on a toboggan), and when they finally brought a few sticks of wood out they made a big production out of it.
Now I'm a Johnny-no-shack, but ya doesn't have ta call me Johnny!
The problem with quotes on the internet is that they're difficult to prove.

I have been starting to think about a hardside, so with the problem of guys drilling around your shack, would it help to just block it up when you leave for the day, up 6" or so. Then just drop it before you fish next time?

Finally, somebody understands what I'm trying to say! This thread was started to get advice on portables, with a little preamble to explain why I need one. It was not started to protect my favorite fishing spot! Aqua, PM me we'll go fishing together, I hope you like whiskey.
I primarily fish Last Mountain as I have a cabin there. This is a huge lake & I have more than one go to spot. If someone gets "too" close its usually because I have started a conversation or they were invited to use the holes that I have dug(broken auger, forgot gas,etc.). I'm not heartless, if I noticed that someone is having trouble with their equipment, I will drill them some holes or lend them my auger, as other have done for me in the past.
I started a thread last year at this time to complain about 3 old buggers that showed up at Kinookimaw without an auger. They just walked out & without a word to me or my fishing buddies, just started to fish in our setup. When asked what they were doing, they got all defensive and said that it was a free lake. well I gotta say that was not a good thing to say! Things escalated way out of control, with alot of "words",they left in a huff, accusing us as being the a-holes. You decide.
Now, you gotta understand, this is not a typical day on the ice. If I'm treated ignorantly I recipricate!!! This, I think is a normal response to blithering idiots.
Did I say that I am enjoying my new shack?

Yes,
as far as the pop up looking better (easier to transport), they all have plus's and minus's.
What you really need is a half dozen shacks for every condition and type of fishing ;D

 Aqua,
No disrespect intended, but you sound like a lawyer! You have a way of phrasing things so they are just this side of disrespectful & you love to play the crowd. I wouldn't hold my breath for that invite from B.I., especially if he's seen this thread and your conversation in the round. But, if I'm wrong, be sure to remind B.I. that he is not to worry if his shack freezes in because of someone elses stupidity & that he shouldn't tell fish tales while he is having whiskeys in his new portable(Snow Wolf). I'm sure that he will be good with that as he looks pretty dam# friendly too. By the way, where hell is Bear Hills?

On the topic of portable shacks.  I just bought one last year for $900.00 (Team Wild 3 Man) and am looking to sell it.  I bought something a little smaller.  I only used it about 5 times.  Selling for $650.00.  If anyone is interested feel free to PM.  It's a very good shack in perfect condition.  Not trying to be a salesman - but thought I would post it seeing that it is a few hundred bucks cheaper than buying new.
