I for one am much more excited about the launch of Nbourque's new channel - one that doesn't give out advice or positive reinforcement, leaves all panfish on the ice for eagles, and isn't against a 10" auger for fear of broken ankles. ;D

Not sure about that one.... where was that? I suppose it's possible... Hmmmm.... I haven't fished on ice this year. Caught over 70 stripers though...  The only time I caught next to nothing in the past couple years was on a lake where seeing a fish on sonar or getting a hit and spit flag is something!! Even that day, a couple  I caught 2 10" togue jigging. There were 10' of smelt on the screen most of the time!!! I'll go there again this year a couple times for the 20+" whitefish I probably won't catch!!! Then back to catching!!! Let me know if you need help, Woody!

Our loss of Whitefish ,from SEbago lake then Moosehead, then Caribou  Chesuncook. Was the lowering of PH  cause by Fallout, and extra decaying of wood around watershed to these lakes The people blaming stocking of Togue in Sebago not a reason at all . Smelts in fresh and salt water have had a tough time also , If we could bring PH back to what it was  it would help sensitive fish, Pot ash in large quainties dropped into watershed would help, But that would cost money,

Last summer I was at a lecture by a biologist from the down east salmon federation.   Other than improving habitat one of the problems they are addressing is to adjust the PH of the rivers by putting large amounts of clam shells in them.  The clam shells they get from places that process the clams that consider them a waste product.  Kind of solves two problems at the same time.  Of course, you have to transport and plant them in the right places, but it doesn't involve buying chemicals from someplace else and transporting them here.  The stuff is already here and not considered much use until you think outside the box for a bit.  Probably not the total solution but a part of it. I'm not a chemist but apparently the clam shells break down over time and disappear so other than changing the PH for the better they don't cause other problems.

Part of the issue here is that all the clam shell produced in the State of Maine isn't enough to do The Machias River watershed. Then, the shell needs to be "composted" ie dried and organic material gone. It was shown the shell disappers nearly entirely in the course of less than a year. There was increased insect life in study areas, I'm told. That insect life is essential to juvenile salmon and other fish as they grow. No food = No Fish.

PH/Acidity Level is the issue. Shell matter is nearly pure calcium. Calcium neutralizes acidity, like rolaids..  Less acidity = more survival of insects and other aquatic life effected by PH. Small insects are essential for juvenile fish and others. ALSO, high acidity impinges heavily on egg to hatchling survival even before food is an issue for developing and feeding fish.

All those small Perch  White, Yellow, Crappies , my fillet knife does its job . They make some of the best fish cakes  anyone could ever want. and it gives the fish left behind in small lakes and ponds a better chance of finding more to eat which makes them grow bigger and healthier for another year.

When fishing up to northern lakes, this early one needs to be aware of the early fluff snow and how it slows down the ice make up . the pressure cracks will let water seep up causing slush in many un expected places, also lakes were low in nov. and rising water all winter will make slush and thin ice common around shores. pressure ridges will start to form on windy direction changes. In shallow narrows areas between larger lakes currents will prevent ice from  forming as thick as high water.    All the caustion  possible is necesary this time of year. Please stay safe .

Lol all the time huh chummy? It’s doable but a 10” hole makes it alot easier and less chance of losing the fish.

A 6 inch hole is fine for when your ripping lips for Dink perch . A larger hole helps for pike or charged up Big Trout and Salmon.
We hi jacked the Joe Holland post .
Joe must use the 8-1/2” K-Drill . 🥶

Go on U-Tube Joe Holland youll get to know him, Its a good way to get some fishing in on a thin ice condition or on bad day out on ice . Sit in front of your wood stove in a  nice comphy chair. This way you stay safe, A friend went out jigging today and 5" of solid ice until you got out more than 500yds then he found 3" common. after this next warm rain spell the cold nights should give up 6" of solid in most ponds and lakes ,We need to stay away from spring holes  and brook and stream  entrances . Narrows between ponds and lakes never freeze good. Always fish with someone familar with where you plan to go.

They should keep their mouth shut about where they are regardless of the size of the lake. Show the action, don't burn the spot. But, it's all about $ in their pockets and spot burning ups the subscriber count. I agree with gamefisher, one great aspect of ice fishing is the relative solitude it affords if you search out a little known spot. Seems few people are willing to do their own homework anymore.

If you had told me 15 plus years ago on here that people from Maine (I think more that have moved to Maine) would enjoy catching yellow perch, crappie, and bluegill, I never would have believed it.  The mentality has really changed that quickly.  I did enjoy his video on axe making, real Maine history.

Actually,  crappies, yellow perch, sunfish, bluegills, and whitefish are some of the least bio accumulators as they eat very low on the food chain. Of course you could find it out yourself if you tried. Meanwhile primary consumers like large trout, bass, pickerel, pike and even white perch,  which are very long lived,  can have very high amounts of contaminants in them. Try to get educated their grubby!  The fishes bodies can be considered similarly to filters. Humans also... Some particles get stuck, especially heavy metals and man made chemicals. Higher on the food chain = more stuck molecular particles.

No doubt you're correct about changing attitudes. But I think there's two reasons to catch panfish, eating and lots of action.

On the ice, getting on a school of anything with a jigging rod is great fun. Especially for kids, action, action, action. I think people in Maine have always enjoyed the action part. Plus the availability of quality electronics has really advanced ice jigging, making it more like a video game. Who doesn't like a good video game?

For eating, the yellow perch I've caught in ME had grubs. No bueno. Not a fan of white perch to eat, bland IMO. Strange that west of NH eating a white perch makes you a leper, and yellow perch sell for $20+ a pound. I icefish a lake once or twice a season in clamfarmer/anomaly's childhood stomping grounds. The fishmongers will buy YP for $2/lb as they lie but won't accept WP as a gift. Not judging, just saying. Never eaten a bluegill anywhere, and don't intend to soil my palate. But a tasty crappie, yum.

All that being said, I don't spend half of my year in Maine because I want to catch panfish. They're in every single lake in "away" land. I want quality trout and salmon fishing.

Actually, bluegills are excellent eating. Firm and sweet. There are waters where the yellows here are "clean" or occasionally with a grub or two. Long Pond on MDI is one. Long Lake and the attached waters are said to be as well. To me crappie are good but bland... take a sauce well...hehe. Yellow perch fillets can be blanched for about 35 - 40 seconds w/Old Bay to have a very shrimp like texture. GREAT with cocktail sauce! Also they fry up nice and fish with a light sweet flavor. To me, white perch are kinda strong.

Something about sunfish, I just can't eat one. That goes for all members of the family, including bronze and green carp.  ;)

I've enjoyed YP from Oneida, as you say very tasty. The ones I've caught in ME have been in lakes with healthy populations of loons and fishcrates. So comes the grubs.  :-[  When I head to upstate NY it's specifically for the eyes, commonly referred to as the devil in ME.  :)

"The Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine – Institute for Legislative Action (SAM-ILA) has given Governor Janet Mills an “A” grade and thumbs up in its 2022 Election Guide, applauding her collaborative approach to governing and her strong work to protect and expand opportunities for sportsmen, including replenishing the Land for Maine’s Future Program, improving Maine’s fish hatcheries, and addressing PFAS contamination. "The Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine – Institute for Legislative Action (SAM-ILA).. Gave "....Republican candidate for Governor Paul LePage was given a grade of “incomplete” and withdrew his questionnaire following his interview with SAM-ILA."

https://janetmills.com/governor-janet-mills-earns-a-grade-thumbs-up-from-sportsmans-alliance-of-maine-ila/

"“As an avid angler myself, I know how much fishing means to sportsmen and women across Maine,” said Governor Mills. With this investment, we will improve our fish hatcheries to support our outdoor economy and to ensure that generations of fishermen to come will be able to enjoy the great outdoors and the thrill of a brook trout on a tight line.”
The $20 million in federal American Rescue Plan funds dedicated through the Governors Jobs Plan will be used to modernize the Grand Lake Stream and New Gloucester Fish Hatcheries, as well as water outflow at IFWs six other hatcheries. New Gloucester was built in the 1930s, and the fish are still raised in 1930s era earthen raceways which are collapsing. Grand Lake Stream improvements include the installation of new rearing tanks that will safeguard one of the last remaining distinct landlocked salmon populations."  https://thefishingwire.com/20-million-to-rebuild-state-fish-hatcheries-in-maine/

As someone with a YT channel, I rarely name a spot, and try not to add landmarks. Many do tho. It does add viewership interest if a place is named, but I don’t like to do it. Still realizing how little it takes for someone to recognize a spot tho. Came to realize I’ll never 100% be able to conceal a spot.

I was curious how you felt about him making an episode at one of your crappie spots after you had done so.  I stopped guiding many years ago because it wasn't worth it to see people in those same spots after with 10 of their closest friends.  Wasn't so bad trolling as ice fishing as you are moving around.

I can only imagine the beating that pond has taken since his last crappie video, many recognizable house shots for people in the know.

I have watched your videos and you are respectful and try not to spot burn. I support your YouTube channel. As long as you’re aware of the issue I’m cool with people making videos. The guy I’m talking about literally goes onto google maps with the people and shows them exactly what/where to go……for 75 goddamn dollars. I emailed him about taking business from other guides (including himself) and was nice about it. He replied “sorry you don’t like the way I make a living and the way the world is changing.”  And something about “hope you have a better day”. Lol. Such a cop out.

Josh you do it right. You try to be as respectful as you can. The bigger lakes it’s not so bad. It’s just those smaller places that get spot burned.

most ponds in Maine perch and other fish run very small  because of lack of food  P H probaly has a lot to do with it. so by throwing back small fish does not help build size, help build size by keeping and using the smaller size feed the eagle and other wild life filleting smaller fish still give you more meat than youd get in a clam or Scallop , a lot of the smaller ponds have thousands of small perch Crappies in them and they multiply  but size stays real small,  Like a small pond that has hornpout  put in it they multipy to a point that kills the pond. so throwing back all these smaller perch and Crappies  does not give the other fish in the pond  a chance to grow bigger, if the state would stock these ponds with  live food  like freshwater shirmp etc   . I think we could  start to see a big improvement....

I jig a lot ofwhite perch and kep them all, some of real small ones go for cut bait  but i fillet them all and compost the rest. Years ago farmers use to go to Brooks during the sucker spawn with their  Manure spreaders and fil them with suckers they would then take them back to their farm and spread them on Gardens and fields ,all my fillets give us fish fllets for  a few months. fish cakes. I use to be able to go out and jig cod enough for a year in one day, but no more. Draggers took that chance away  One day id fish  east and west cod ledge and in one day jigging cod would give me fillets for a year.now  after several trips up jigging up to a lake near by i have  enough fresh water haddock  for the year.

I try hard not to spot burn. More so now as my channel is growing, and more people are watching. Every lake / pond is someone’s “home” “go-to” spot. Even the bigger lakes. For example, I filmed many videos in-front of a very large concrete wall, never showed an inch of it. Obviously some would recognize it, but I had many people asking for the spot, that I knew fished that exact spot!! Only mentioned it here because that place is a dumpster fire now!!

Joe and I both talked about not naming it. After the fact, I realized I gave away a few details I shouldn’t have. Something as simple as a “small pond with no mapping available.”  No joke, I had 8 people tying at the same time on FB after posting that video. Thankfully, there’s still some good slabs in there!!

The more that fish an area the better it gets cleaning out all the smaller ones so they have more food  to help them get bigger.  all of us would have a chance to visit with each other. and no spend time and money going down to Damriscotta lake.

I agree. Too many small fish, and / or too many bigger fish can be a problem. Only so much food to go around

It might be good not to share OR take people, anyone, to places like that!!!I,for one, will need share stuff with folks again, with a couple exceptions. I know know a couple folks that make a point of fishing places they saw on youtube.

I've watched most, if not all of your videos.  Yeah, I recognize quite a few of the spots as it's next to impossible in some cases, though I don't blame you for that.  What is WAY more important to me is for anyone with a popular YouTube channel (or similar) to demonstrate/educate a responsible ethic for enjoying our fisheries resources and the outdoors in general.  Proper fish handling, sensible harvest practices, and general courtesy and respect for the resources are what it's all about.

I am surprised that people outright ask for your spots.  Pretty bold asking to be spoon-fed like that, but I guess some people don't care.

Oh man..I be happy if people only asked. Some basically demand the spot, and give me mega s**t when I don’t. People go nuts when I / we post a fast paced video. Then they make it their life mission to find the place. Some play the “I know that spot.” Then ask a basic question like what access i use. Hoping to get me to say a launch name, road name etc.

I’m kinda still trying to figure out the spot in the cheat code video  . Mostly because my buddy Jon was one of the guides that was out with him, and he won’t tell me where it is exactly. He gave me a hint that we’ve been there before, but we definitely didn’t know about the crappie at the time.  I’m just curious where it is now, but not putting too much effort into it lol.

If you ever come fishing with me and talk that much Nick, I'm shoving you down a hole.... and I know you are a big guy. ;D  I was hoping the drunk downeasters would show up and drown him out but I guess they have been relagated to second string. :'(

Did someone say this thread is random? Some of us still lurk. I have the 40v SM, same issue as PF out of the box… it was a battery issue. Second battery was fine. Replacement battery fine. It does catch breaking thru tho. Annoying. For Woody, yes, my SM is 10”. 😊 Perm shacks sitting over the best spots does eat my craw a bit. If no-one there I’ll crowd. If someone there, I like the ‘mile-away’ rule. Have you seen any cuddly bears Eric? Anyone lurk the NH site? Funny & brutal stuff over there. From Ellsworth, any that border/in town boundaries should be fine, state record togue came from nearby…. In 1953.  Joe, Woody, the 5 downeastahs and a bottle of Jack sounds watchable.  Throw in a bassmaster, kill every bass they catch sit back & You/Nick/PF video it all.  Oh, still thinking on that boat Scalloper. After 15 years I’m THIS close.  I’m wondering what size hooks are best for togue? Leader line poundage? Anyone?
You basically summed up this thread haha

I believe you are correct that there are a number of Maine's oligotrophic lakes which would benefit from both pH/alkalinity adjustment (increase), and also nutrient enrichment. Two centuries of continuous logging has increased acid runoff and removed nitrogen and phosphorous from the watershed, which would otherwise end up in rivers and lakes. Same thing happens every time a fish is taken home, that nutrient is lost instead of recycled. Both N and P are needed to a certain extent, even in oligotrophic lakes. Potash would address the pH problem, but a little goes a long way. A smidge of fertilizer would help some waterbodies as well. Nutrients are not the boogeyman until there's too much.  I would be shocked if anything is done though. Too many people pulling in different directions so nothing gets accomplished or even attempted.
