Title: Bradwell 2021-2022
Post by: Hatandboots on Nov 20, 2021, 12:35 PM
Just went out this morning and guess what? 4 inches at least of decent ice. Walked around hitting the ice and drilling as I went and it was pretty consistent. Fish seem shy, maybe it was just the time of day.

Tight lines!

Well Hatandboots, you inspired me. I can happily report that the ice is a consistent 6 - 7 inches thick out to 500 yards from shore. Thick enough to regret not bringing the power auger instead of the old Mora hand crank. Like you said, the fish were finicky with the exception of this big girl who hit without hesitation. Too bad she didn't bring a bunch of friends to the party. Sadly, there was no evening walleye bite where I was set up.

Great evening to be out though, and the season has just begun.

Nice perch! I'll for sure bring the power auger this weekend when I go. With the rate the ice is forming that might have been the only trip I even used my hand auger.

Spent Saturday moving around looking for fish, didn't find many. Tried deep spots, structure near the deep, mud flats and then shallows by a weed edge. Only the weed edge produced. Saw maybe 5 perch and one aggressive pike.

What ice thickness did you find H&B?

Seemed about 10" pretty much everywhere. Quite a bit of ice, seems like Bradwell has more than anywhere.

Drove the Tacoma on without incident the last two days. Ice over 12". As for the fishing, it has been a mixed bag. All those hungry perch on Blackstrap haven't sent the mealtime memo down the canal to Bradwell. Nonstop marks translate to infrequent bites. Slabgrabbers and maggots have produced the best.

Welcome to the forum Retired Guy.

Bradwell can be accessed from the East or the West and from a trail out of the south if you want to walk on. The "sunken road" that runs North - south from that trail is a very popular spot. You will find folks set up all over since there are not really many dramatic structures on the reservoir. The good thing is that it is a relatively small water body.

I have had success on all four points of the compass at different times. Other days, I have caught nothing. A couple weeks back, I went four plus hours without a bite. I was on the phone to my wife apologizing for not bringing any dinner home when the first of five fish hit - all out of the same hole.

Good luck.

Tons of snow this year, a 4x4 more or less needed to drive on and around. I imagine that will send a lot of folks to blackstrap. Lots of perch on the camera but don't seem to be hungry, but at least the jacks are. Hopefully once more people are out the "paths" will become more driveable, getting on and off at the boat launch area is tough.

Anyone been out lately? Wondering how the bite was and the access?
