suggestions for Nebraska newbie?
« on: Jan 05, 2016, 08:22 PM »
Just moved from Washington State into the Omaha area, fairly experienced in ice fishing for yellow perch, bluegill, and crappie.  Interested in tip-up fishing for walleye and pike, although I've never had much opportunity (few if any pike in WA, and ice fishing is always touch and go in WA due to ocean moderating the climate).

Pretty clueless on where to give ice fishing a try.  Don't know anything about Nebraska lakes, nor reputation as an ice fishery.

Any suggestions for lakes?  Particularly like catching yellow perch, so I'd be really keen for ideas on where to try.

Thanks in advance!

Wanahoo is pretty close to you and has Pike, LMB, bluegill and crappie in it. However, i have yet to fish it on ice this year. Did very well this summer there. And for the yellow perch, those are to my knowledge relatively slim around here.
The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

Like are catch and release in the Omaha area. Try Cunningham or wanahoo for pike. If you want to catch decent perch, pike and walleye you're better off making the drive to South Dakota or up to okoboji in northern Iowa.

The western part of the state has a better perch population

You should go to the game and parks web page. look at the 2016 fishing forcast. Or check out the thread on this forum. Nor much perch fishing around Omaha.

Keep it safe! JDL
