Any reports on ice condition in northern, WI.?
« on: Dec 10, 2009, 10:44 AM »
I'm going out exploring today and I will give a report when I get back. Anyone else seen and or done any fishing on lakes in the North yet. What lakes are you fishing on? Lets help each other out here. Be safe!

Here is the Reply I got from Lake Nebagamon, WI
The lake was open on the 5th and skim ice for couple days after that
then 8-12" of snow so some open spots still and slush all over.  It is 4
above right now so its making ice.

Well I made it on the ice today. I was on one of the smaller bays off of Lake Holcombe. I spudded my way out to about 7' of water.
I was on approximately 2" - 2 1/2" of good black ice and 2" of solid frozen slush. Marked some suspended fish but they weren't interested in my presentation. (Small jig w/ a grub). It was cold and I had a hard time keeping my holes open. I could only get a couple of picture because my cell phone went dead. I tried to get a picture of my vexilar while it was marking fish but it didn't show up. The pictures aren't the greatest but I was buy myself and no one around to take a picture of me actually fishing. Felt good to get out! I'm going again tomorrow with a friend.

PS: I'm not too happy with my reels spooled with new Fire Line Micro Ice Crystal, that line freezes up bad! (1# test)..  I'm sure it will be a good line once I can get inside a shack but not on cold days outside like today.

I've had the same results with any braid.  My jig rods all have Mono on them.

bearbgone, the braided lines hold more water due to how the line is made.  You're right...it should be fine once you are inside a shanty with a heater.

Went out on Holcombe on Saturday. Fished around 7 feet of water no luck. a few people set up between 2-5pm hoping to catch some Walleyes traveling towards shallow water. They caught two of them on jigging raps. Sunday we went off of Lions Park. we where in about 13 ft of water. Saw something on the vexilar come look at our lure but no takers. Sounds like it was pretty slow for everyone else.

I went to Hemlock yesterday and caught a few fish but the ice was in poor shape. Broke through top layer into water with crummy ice underneath.

How bad is the ice?   I have been working during and since the snow/rain.  Hope to get out Tuesday, but I was wondering on the ice quality.

Went out Xmas morning to check the ice on Big St Germain.  Everywhere we checked west of the boat landing had about 6 inches or less of frozen slush.  In some spots there was an inch or two of decent ice below it but it was too spotty, spud bar was going through with little effort.  With all the snow they got up there I wonder how long it will be until there will be safe enough ice to venture out.  There was one guy out there with a permanent shack...  pretty brave.  Ended up packing up and heading east of Sayner, 5-7" and good fishin.

I was on Hemlock last Saturday and the condition were terrible. Lots of crusty snow with water and slush underneath for when your feet break through. As far as ice, maybe 3" of decent ice and the rest is frozen slush. (grey ice).  I usually put a shack on Hemlock every year and I don't see that happening any time soon this year.

I finally found some decent ice yesterday on Otter Lake. The south end had 10-11" of good solid ice. I herd the north end was only 3-4". The snow must of all blown to the north end.???

craziest and scariest ice Ive ever seen.....seriously , every lake is different than the last and it could be 5 different depths within a small area of the same lake , it all seems to depend on how & where the snow drifted....hopefully this cold snap will penetrate the snowpack and slush layer to really firm it up.....still havent seen a single vehicle other than 4 wheelers & sleds and have doubys about driving my truck at all this year........

if you go.......be carefull

Everywhere I've been on Alice has been 9".  But, it's about 5" of good clear ice, and 4" of cloudy junk.

Be careful.
