''Good deer hunting up there. It's kind of a weird town. It's like a frontier town sort of. I miss it.''

Yeah, I'm definatly with you there.  I am actually heading up in 2 weeks to get the last bit of the deer season in.  Got a nice 6 point out there last year.  Besides Meacham, since that's really the only lake up there I've fished, what other places would you reccomend for some good hard water fishing?  I still don't know the area up there that great as we only go up 3-4 times a year.  My sister in law lives in massena and tells me there are some decent sized ponds up there that may be worth a try, but I would hate to take my father in law out for his first time, and not have him see anything...  I'm hoping that the Fishing Challenge in Tupper goes off again this year, I really want to show the in-laws the finer points of ice fishing.  They love hunting and fishing, but they kinda clam up in the winter, I keep telling them there is more to do in the winter than sit around the house waiting for spring... :)

I'll be ready if it is!! I just hope we don't have a mid-December warm-up like last year.

Took the boat up to Schroon lake to see of I could find the Lakers and Salmon. No luck water temps were50 degrees on the main lake. I only found fish on the finder still hugging the bottom in about 100-120 ft of water. I would spot what looked like clouds of bait fish then the bigger fish. When I launched the boat at the southern end the marshy area to the right of the launch had some cone ice and it held for the day. It wont be long if we get some temps to hold at freezing all day for a extended period of time . I figure one or two more times up to the lake then it will be time to ice fish.

After today the temps drop off quite nicely   everywhere in NY it seems. Per http://www.accuweather.com/forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=1&zipcode=12983&metric=0, There is a definite trend of low to mid 30's as a high and average lows in the teens.  All that said I extremely hopefull by next Saturday that we might have some ice, preferably 3inch's or more. I am still targeting a trip up north so if anyone lives in the Placid/Saranac lake area please keep us posted on any small ponds freezing over etc.
Peace :afro:

3" in a week is really pushing it.  Last year I was on Lake Colby in a boat fishing salmon in mid December.

It sure would be nice but right now it's 48 f.  I run the Northern Challenge Ice Fishing derby here in Tupper lake and it sure would make me feel a whole lot better and a lot less work answering the phone if we got some early ice.

It always seams like accuweather's forcasted lows are 10 degrees lower than what the weather channel says.  Not sure why this is.  Seams like the average between the 2 sites is usually about right.  I hope Accuweather is right this time, because if they are, there might be safe ice to be found by Tuesday...  I'm not holding my breath, but I'll be looking.

Just went for a drive.  Bad news is there is little to no ice anywhere.  Good news, all this snow we got will not hurt things.

Snow in Tupper Lake is about 1-2" temps holding to lows in the mid 20's and highs in the lower 30's.  Bad news is that next Wednesday is supposed to be really warm.

I hope it's not that warm :'( Accuweather has high of 44 and a low of 23 for Wednesday.  I know its not an exact science but that average temp is 33.5. That only a few degrees above freezing ???

Whats the deal with the descrepancy between weather.com vs accuweather.com.  Weather.coml is calling for lows of 16 & 23  for sunday & monday. Accuweather is calling for 6 & 8  for the same days. There  seems to be a pretty consistant spread like this all the time ??? ???

Accuweather was more accurate for Saranac Lake last night.  It was 15 here when I finally got up at 8:30 (late night), could have been even colder earlier in the morning.

At 4:30 Am it was 13F here in Tupper Lake  On the way home from work I took a swing in around Lake Simond and Raquett Pond.  There is ice in some of the sheltered bays but not safe to walk on  Hope it stays.

Schroon was between 45 and 47 degrees yesterday. It was a beautiful day cool but the sun was shining so it wasn't to bad. My father in-law said Saturday it never got above freezing in Brant and it was 14 degrees overnight. Lakers still sitting on the bottom over a hundred ft of water. Did get beautiful Salmon and one nice laker. Probably over a month off for Schroon unless there is a real big cold snap. According to my records last year I was still fishing Schroon from my boat last January. Hopefully it wont be that late this year. Tight lines.

from my understanding,

the colder and calm it is out the better for ice making
A good day fishing inst complete unless it's spent with family or friends.
