First attempt at a hardside
« on: Nov 22, 2012, 08:36 AM »
I started building this last spring. Had to quit it for the summer to do my summer projects. It's time to get this thing done!!!

It is going to be 6'6" X 12'. With 6'6" walls. The ceiling is vaulted, so there is plenty of headroom.

The skids are 2- 2 X 10 glued and bolted together. Notched for the joists

Skids and floor are attached and completed. Flooring is 3/4 pressure treated 3/4" plywood w/ 2" pink hardboard insulation.

Holes are cut for hole covers. Walls are up and completed. 2 X 2 Studs glued and screwed
After rethinking things, I am going to take out the back wall and build a fold up ramp. This allows me to haul my wheeler or side by side in the shack during transport.

Rafters are done (ran out of hangers, installed now). 2 X 3 Rafters glued and screwed as well.

I have the wiring for a 12 volt system in (waiting for my LED hole lights, porch light, and switches form Fish House Supply to arrive).
The copper tubing for Humphrey Lights (Propane style lights), Big Buddy heater, and two burner cook stove are in and tested.
I am going to get the paneling done on the inside. The roof and walls insulated this holiday weekend.
I will take more photos today and post the progress.

Looks awesome. I bulit mine the same but i used steel studs so i could use 2" blueboard for insulation. Wire a led lite just outside the door. Again looks awesome and about as lite and rugged as you can go. How you gonna set your hitch up?

 Thanks Ak.
I have a new Tow hitch for towing vehicles. A friend had it laying in his scrap iron pile.
I will post some photos tonight of the hitch and the progress that was made this holiday weekend.

Here are a couple of the shanty with the windows, wiring ,and copper tubing in.

 More later

Thanks Guys for the kind comments.
It has been a lot of fun to build. And it will be nice to finally fish out of it.

Here is the progress as of today.
2" pink board insulation is completed (need to stuff some bat  insulation in some small cracks).
Paneling on the inside is 95% done. Still need to put up the trim and fill brad holes w/ putty. I am going to put some kind of finish on the paneling to protect it (any suggestions are welcome).
Humphrey lights are hung and tested (I just wanted to see them working.... I will have to take them off for staining the wood).

Here are some shots from this weekend...

Sorry for posting so many pictures... I guess I am stoked ::)

I would feel good about it if there is a foot of good ice. We usually get between 2 to 3 ft of ice.
I sure hope that this warm stuff goes away soon.  >:(

Yesterday was the first live test burning the lights. They do put out a lot heat and I think that they will help heat the shanty.

How you gonna set your hitch up?

Here's that hitch. Sorry for poor quality of the photo, my cell phone...
The bolts will be pins, I will remove them and the hitch when we get to the "spot".
I have some plates to bolt on the skids(in the photo, not very clear)that the pins will go through. I hope that this will make a good pull point for towing on the ice.

Have seen many a shack whose hitch has ripped off of it.
Some have had the wood that the skis were made out of split/come apart if the hitch was attached to them.
Have seen some hitches ripped off of the frame.
Truly a vexing issue this hitch attachment question is.
I put a piece of angle steel behind the cross brace of the frame on one end to provide support and something
for the nuts/washers to butt up against.  But it was a small shack and I always made sure it was free of the ice
before starting to tow it away.
I ripped the hitch right off my snow sled once, but that's a different story.   After I did that I have only towed
flip overs and jets sleds with my snowmobile.

Good call MD. I was concerned about that very thing. I was hoping that if I installed those plates, on both sides of each skid, that it would stiffen them up enough to make a good pull point. I'll take some better photos tomorrow of the plates and hitch.
 Thanks Again

Yahoo !!! Their Back  ;D .

I have made some progress on the Shanty.

Here are some better shots of the plates that I am going to use on the skids. I hope they will keep them from splitting

We installed the LED hole lights,Switches, and 12volt charging port for cell / flasher battery.

Next was the small table and the Bed. The bed is a Cabelas Outfitter cot that is Huge. I took it apart and used 1 1/2 fence post to make the stretcher bars. Mount notched  2 X 6 to the wall and there I have a great bed ! I can put the poles in the back notches while fishing. It really gets the bed out of the way.

Again, Sorry for so many photos and for being so long winded....... ::)
I am going to try to get the Marine carpet down this weekend.

Man I hope my first actual house looks like this!

a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

Great idea on the bed! I like it. One idea I have, how about adding another slot in the middle of the two you have now and adding another block and slot on the back wall up higher this way you can make a couch. Don't know if I explained myself too well. But that would add seating during the day. Good job!
