Industrial grade shack 2
« on: Feb 16, 2012, 01:18 PM »
OK trying this again to see how much better a guy can build a shack. Got the skid started. Going with a PVC diamond plate flooring easier to keep clean over carpet.

Too much snow here for a wheelhouse Layne. This year is an exception but I know last year my lady friend couldn't even get on the lake with her wheelhouse. Takes 2 minutes to load and unload this thing off a trailer if done properly.

I hear ya, thats exactly why I went with skids this go around as well. If you have a good flat deck to get it to and from the lake you just cant beat the mobility of skids. You've already got me thinking about my next setup and im not even done the current one! Once my big wooden shack is complete I think im going to build a lightweight aluminum framed 8x8' for pulling behind the quad or sled. Im thinking aluminum skids/frame, rigid foam insulation, black dibond sheeting for the exterior with a clear coat, rv door and windows, rubber roof and propane heat.

Keep up the good work, look forward to seeing the progress.

Aluminum is really the way to go Layne. As long as you aren't too hard on it. It's tough, doesn't normally corrode and will last a lifetime. Yeah I know, some guys prefer wheelhouses, it's great if you are going on lakes that have roads plowed or in areas where there isn't much snow. I don't know how much snow you have had in Saskatchewan the past few years, but Alberta has seen quite a load, this year, like I said, has been the exception. I have a 16' beavertail car hauler and am going to put a winch on it. Winch on, winch off, nothing to it. Then a guy can hook a side by side or pickup to it and drag it on the lake.

I love the idea of alum, I can cut it no problem on my CNC router or plasma but I only have a miller 252 mig and its not setup for alum yet. Im going to look into getting a spoolgun for it then at least I could cut everything and tack it together.. then take it to buddies shop to be finish welded. Im going to send you a PM next week to pick your brain about an idea I have for my current shack, I want to build an aluminum slideout and sheet it with the same dibond im using for the rest of the shack.

Do you sell thoses insulated panels prop? Are they expensive?

Cheers

Layne

I do not sell the panels Layne, but I buy a crap load of panels annually for my business, so I get good pricing on them. Total panel footage on an 8x12 is around 400 feet. The extrusions, channels and tec screws are extra. I thought of doing a slideout as well, but with my design there is no huge benefit to it, it would still fish 4 guys and I am not sure it's worth the trouble.

@surf no bigger, 8 x 12.

I have been tossing the idea of building something similar to this since we have a bunch of 2" foam laying around work that is junk, I think it would insulate it good. I would want some kind of ramp door to haul a 4 wheeler inside of it to the lake.

Did you sheet the floor with wood or did you lay that plastic flooring right over the insulation?

I expect about 1300-1400 lbs all done, the unit is built to fit on a standard car hauler then skidded off on ramps.

where would someone find that floor material, that stuff looks like its durable

I bought the floor material out of the US somewhere, I will get you the info, it's fairly expensive if I recall around $4 sq/ft, I bought it in 10' x 24' rolls. It's the same stuff they use in toy haulers.

Did you sheet the floor with wood or did you lay that plastic flooring right over the insulation?

Floor was sheeted with 3/4" tongue and groove flooring drilled and screwed into the aluminum frame.

Go the power system installed, counters, and cooktop. Just need to plumb in the propane and do the cabinet doors and should be gtg.
