Title: Started my 6x9 Build
Post by: mackdog75 on Feb 06, 2014, 10:49 PM
Started on my build. Its a 6x9. Steel studs and 1x1 square tubing frame with 1x2 skids. Going to skin it with tin sididng/roofing. Havent decided on a rubber roof or tin roof yet. And cant decide on wood heat or propane heat. Any ideas on anything I should do or not do?

Looks like a great start to a new shack. I would go with wood heat being propane is so expensive.

How heavy do you anticipate this house will be?

Hope you keep posting pictures as you go.

Not sure what it weighs yet.  But as it sits in the picture I can easily pick up the ends. The 3 walls I built on the floor and was able to pick all 3 up at once easily. I will post more pics this weekend as progress goes. but also have to make time to go fishing also. ;D. I plan on keeping it as light weight as possible.

I'm liking this mackdog! Definitely keep posted as you go! Maybe I can even come check it out  ;D.
And quick question... what kind of welder are you using?
Good luck!

Old Miller 200 wire machine. Some days I like it better than my Miller 350 at work. Its a smooth old simple machine.
going to pick up a door and some tin tomorrow.

I think I got the roof figured out. Going to sheet it and then spray it with bed liner. Also going to bed line the floor on the inside.

Post by: Chasing Lunkers on Feb 07, 2014, 10:58 PM
Bedliner sounds kinda heavy but would definitely work great!
How about insulation? Ever since coming across the zack shacks I'm interested in spray foam insulation... just a thought.
I will say I do like your frame so far. And how much more lightweight are steel studs rather than wood?

Depends on the brand of bed liner. I spray Vortex Bed Liner and weight wise it is less than half the weight of other brands like Rhino. I have sprayed boards before and weighed them before and after and I don't think it will add any more weight than other materials would. I am going to look into spray foam insulation but from what I have heard it is pretty spendy. But it would be nice to have. Steel studs are super light. I would say 5 steel studs to every 1 wood stud.

Got to love the Miller Wire feed. I have the 211, it makes welding enjoyable.

I am looking to build a 5x8 this summer. My question is, how much did you spend in metal?

Also, I say you should heat with propane. If you want to leave the heat on for a couple days in your absence, you can and not have to worry about it, unlike wood.

the metal for frame was 1x1 and 1x2 was free. Had some at home and got the rest as scrap from work. The door was 30.00 from a junk yard. The steel studs run about 3.00 a piece but I also got those free. The tin siding is about 30.00 a sheet for a 16' piece and figure I will need about 3 of those. I think I am pretty set on propane for heat. Just have to figure out insulation. Im going to call a few places and see if spray foam is even an option.
Title: Re: Started my 6x9 Build
Post by: Chasing Lunkers on Feb 09, 2014, 11:46 PM
I was thinking of also building one this summer but I was only going to build a 4x8 as it will be my first shanty build... but now after seeing mackdog's 6x9 frame I'm thinking I might need to go a little bigger...

As far as the heat I'm definitely using propane so that all I gotta do is bring the 20# tank.

And btw, what made you decide on a 6x9 mack? And how bout you clear_ice with a 5x8?
I just want to keep mine as lightweight as possible and have enough from for at least 2 guys. But room for 3 or 4 would be better as long as I can keep it light.

Keep up the good work Mack!

Post by: mackdog75 on Feb 10, 2014, 03:04 PM
I decided on 6x9 cause the tin siding I am using is 3ft wide and I found sheets of OSB for the floor in 9ft lengths. So less waste and cutting. Also wanted enough room to sit with a jigging rod and 4ft wide seemed kind of tight so I went 6.

I am building a 5x8 because that is the size of the tiltbed trailer that I have ;) Also, I have a 4x8, and the only thing that I wish was different in it was the width. That extra foot of width will make a huge difference in my opinion! The only downside to a 5x8 is that it wont fit inside the bed of a pickup.

Sorry to be asking so many questions, but I am seriously curious about the steel studs. Can you give me a link to some of studs that are similar to the ones you used? After looking on a few different websites, there is a lot of different types and sizes.. I'm not sure which ones would be best. Also, are the non-load bearing studs for interiors appropriate for a fish house?

Nope not rich. The Argo is 17 years old with a lot of hours on it lol. I have a 5x10 enclosed trailer I keep the Argo in. It just barely fits in it. If I didn't already have the trailer I would go a 6x12. But I already had the trailer from my bed liner business so that's what I use.
Dropped the Shack off at the insulator hope to have it back Friday!

Got it back from getting insulated. Put my lil buddy heater in for a test and on high. It was 20 outside and checked it in a hour and it was 87 inside. Just needs a few finishing touches and ready to hit the ice. Might have to take a day off from work this week and go out. Anybody have some ideas for inside accessories? Maybe a rattle reel or 2 or any other ideas.

I loaded mine on my trailer and went out to the Port of Entry. Got a gross weight, went home and unloaded the shanty. Then went back and weighted again. That's the only way I could do here where I live. The closest truck stop with a scale is 50 miles away.

Did you ever get the beast on the ice? any pictures?    happy fishing     loved the spray foam idea just not sure I want to pay for it
