BURBOT ON!
« on: Dec 26, 2005, 02:19 PM »
I posted this one in the burbot section too, but I have to share these pics with you non "Burbotheads" as well.  You just have to appreciate the shark like varosity of these bottom dwelling freshwater cod! ;D  :D  Enjoy

Here's a burbot I had caught.  He's a nice sized fish, but the really neat thing was his weight in proportion to his length.  He was just over 36" and his weight was a nice 15.1 lb fish on a registered scale.  Nice fat burbot for his proportions. Anyways, I happened to look down his throat, and low and behold, a tail was sticking' out.  So we grabbed a pliers and pulled the tail backward to reveal a nice 22" or so sucker half digested!!!!!  I'd expect this from a pike or muskie, but a burbot?  Top of the food chain I tell ya! :D :D :D

Here's the fish before exhuming the sucker.....

Huh, look a tail!

Half way out of the mouth....

WoW, neat stuff!

Here's the fish without the sucker.  Kinda skinny eh!

15.1 lber is a good size burbot. 36 inch fish is a good length. They do get bigger though.
That fish would have won the online tourney last year. The biggest then was 32.5 inches and weighed half that size.
Nice fish for sure BD

Very impressive burbot Barleydog!!  Us guys in Manitoba are going to have to fish hard if you're going to post burbot that size during the tourney!  The sucker looks like it went into a fishy pencil sharpener.  :D

Thanks folks!

David,  It was caught on herring, guess it didn't get it's fill!

Haliman,  I don't know?  She was at least 3 - 4 lbs. less?

Terry, Thanks Burbotman!  SOrry I let you down by not slippin' her a little tongue. :D  Those ol boys in "Toba" know it's a small one....  Your boy from BC with the secret lake would use this one for bait!

Sounder,  I love them steamed and served with butter.  Oh so good!

Redneck,  Yeah it was caught on the river.

Skiff, Youz guys catch bigger than that wee one eh?

Killitandgrillit, I appologized to Terry, I didn't want half digeted sucker blown back at me while slipping her the tongue.

Fishingking,  Good!  The meat is a little coarser, but good!

There is. We catch them occasionally on Oneida. Years ago you'd see them left all over the place out on the ice. I guess people didn't realize they actually tasted good and considered them a 'trash' fish.

Thanks folks,
Grizz,  Your right!  Glutony is there trait.  Guess that's what makes them easier to catch in the winter.  They're so dang active building up their energy for mating.  I hope to hook up with a few more...

Walleye1,  Yeah it's a shame that some states consider them rough fish and toss them aside.  I remember catching them as a youngen back in Wisconsin.  The locals didn't mess with them due to their slimy feel and the way they wrapped around your arm or messed with the sacred walleye rigs we set out?  Guess that stigma stuck with me until I moved to AK.  The fish we catch live in crystal clear lakes, clear and glacier rivers in really cold water!  Recipe for good eating I guess.

Pikeguy,  Here's to hoping!  Can't wait for the 06 season.... 8)

Waubay,  We had some last night.  It was great!!!  I still like it steamed with seasoning, lemon, and a little beer.  Served with hot butter it's the closest thing to lobster without the empty wallet!

Danderson,  The depth was only 4 ft. or so.  It was on a river, so I don't think the depth matters.... when they're on the feed. ;)

Sure Pikeguy,
We used to catch them on Butte des Mortes, Poygan (lots of them), Winneseptic :-[, Fox river, Big Green, and the Wisconsin river.  The best fishery seemed to be the Wisconsin and Fox during the spring walleye runs, otherwise, Lake Poygan has some really nice fish.   Terry's fan club eh?  Kiss her gently! ;D
