First trip out on the ice for the 2013 ice fishing season. After an update of 3” of good black ice in the honey hole, I made sure that I got to the bait shop for the famous Wiggle Worm dozen. I packed up my small jet-sled with my tip-up gear and bait bucket, plus I had my big jet-sled with my jigging gear in it too. It must be funny to see me coming down the path with 2 jet-sleds in tow, 1 man with a train of jet-sleds. But, to tell the truth, it’s harder pulling if all the gear is in one sled as posted to spreading the gear out into two sleds. Plus, I can leave my tip-up gear and bait staged around my tip-ups and have the freedom of moving around with my jigging gear in another sled.

Ok, finally out on the ice, drill 7 holes and start to get my 5 tip-ups in. A good hour later I think I finally got all 5 tip-ups in the water, lol. It took forever to even get to the 4th tip-up, I constantly had two and three tip-ups up on the ice after catching, releasing and having to tend to another, Flag, it was an awesome start to the ice fishing season. At one point in the morning, I had 4 tip-ups out of 5 up on the ice.

I c&r’d tons of yellow perch and crappie, caught both on tip-ups and while jigging. I was using icicles (emerald shiners) for bait. Once they got bet up on the tip-ups after catching a fish on them, I was cutting them in half to use on the jig pole. I was using 4# line on my jig rod, tipping my Northland Forage Minnow with half icicle and as fast as I could get it down the hole, crappie customers were awaiting lunch.

So here is a mix of a few big ones from the day.

Second trip out on the ice, had to go back to the same spot as last Friday. It was a nicer day out and not a soul on the ice except me, but tons of holes and sign of the weekend rush. It was nice to just pop open holes with my boot and no need to drill new ones.
Unlike Friday, I was able to get all 5 of my tip-ups in the water and get to jigging. The reason why is because I was running big shiners, on the hunt for a big’n. I started out jigging with maggots and caught a few small perch and bluegills, but there were lots of fish just coming to investigate and not take my offering. So I changed back to my forage minnow and half minnow for a larger profile bait. It seemed to work much better. I even hooked into a big pumpkinseed using a minnow as bait, cool.

I had to move and move and move again to just find a hole that had fish under it. Once I finally found some, it was game on.

Then, as I’m pulling in a monster crappie and getting a measurement on it, I hear something/someone behind me. I look back and the game warden is walking up saying, “Wow, that is a nice crappie.”  I reply “It sure is, by the way, would you mind taking a picture for me?” Game warden, “Sure, for a nice fish like that, no problem.”

I take one good close up picture and release. Yes, released it, the waters I was fishing on is C&R only.

Afterwards, we talk a bit and I show my fishing license, talk a little bit more about fishing spots and the idiots on the ice that have done thru the ice on quads and snowmobiles. And just like that, he walks away and I’ve got the ice all to myself again. I ended up catching a big perch on one of my tip-ups, but no luck with big toothy fish till I was about to pick up. That’s normally how it happens, finally got a fish on the end that pulls back. Not a monster but still a nice catch for waiting a few hours just for that FLAG to go off on a tip-up with big bait. I ended up with an almost 24” northern pike, a great way to end the day.

Monday, Jan. 21, 2013

My son had the day off from school and we had good ice so away we did go ice fishing. He was happy to be going but when we got there, he wasn’t so happy in a refresher coarse on tipups. So after I put in my 5 tipups, he still wasn’t keen on learning. 1st Flag, he wanted to get it, “Nope, you aren’t going to take the time to learn how to use them, this is my fish.”

And flag number 2 flies high, dad’s fish again.
Finally after I took all the glory, he finally was ready to take the refresher coarse. After learning how to sound, mark bottom, bait and set the tipup, we had another Flag, now time to learn how to take care of a Flag’d tipup.
Then it was all she wrote, dad letting son run and gun the tipups and we ended up with a great day of chasing flags and c&r’n lots of fun fish.

A nice fighting fallfish, lots of fun.

Then it was back to the perch.

A nice double, my buddy with a smallie and my son with a slab crappie.

My son let dad take a Flag and have a little fun too.

Then he was right back at it, perch after perch on tipups, what a great way to spend a day.

A fallfish for dad and a few last perch and crappie to end up a fine day on the ice. We fished from about 930a till 1pm and had a banner day.

Fish On!

Nice Perch! And very cool to see those Fallfish. I've caught some of those before but I think I've mistaken some of them for Creek Chubs.

Days like that are a blast. We had 2 trips like that. We finally had 10 min with no flag and were starting to complain as it felt way longer after having flags constantly.
