For those who live up there of have fished it for years when is it normal to get good ice ???

I am no expert nor do I live up there but have friends and contacts that do,it has happened before, ice in mid to late november but from what I understand it is usually around mid December for widespread, fishable ice.The water temps right now are still warm for this time of year and those forecasted temps sure are encouraging, but we still have a long way to go.

I have fished the Fulton Chain and Raquette Lake area a bit, its a little farther south but temps are pretty compariable but I have met some guys out that way that have been fishing a lot longer than me, they all said they have been on fishable ice around Thanksgivng a few times.

Earliest I have been out was 1st week in december, Usually I'd expect to be out on safe ice by Christmas or I'd be bumin.

It varies from late Nov. to late Dec. depending on the year.  I did see my first snow flakes this afternoon  ;D and there was a cold NW wind mixing up the lake so things are starting to shape up

I just checked the forecast - it must have changed.  About 20 degrees tonight in the Dacks, lots of freezing nightime temps.  The wait begins!

With the exception of last years weird weather, the fishable ice has been right around December 15th for the last 6 or 7 years.

There was decent ice in late Novemeber in 2005 I believe, but you can't count on that.
Waiting, calculating, for next adventures on the ice.

Yep, usually mid-December around Long Lake.  However, last year Lake Eaton was open water on New Years Day.  One week later I was driving my 4 wheeler on 8-10 inches on the same lake.

I have Ice!! :'(  Unfortunately it's on our pool.  Temps here in Tupper Lake have been cold at night 20's but the temps during the day are warm.  Looking forward to trying out some new areas this year.

The surface water temps of many of the ponds in the area are hanging in the low 40s.  There has been skim ice on some of the beaver ponds in the mornings.  Making progress, but it will still be a while.
Waiting, calculating, for next adventures on the ice.

Promising weather forecast and skim ice on beaver ponds.

I am going to go through all my gear this weekend and get 100% ready.

I have a freezer full of venison anyway, so I am ready for ice.

I went through my gear in september to (I'm a little anxious this year  :woot:)
Not for anything but has anyone noticed the difference in forecast  temps between accuweather.com vs weather.channel.com. The overnight lows in the dacks seem to be in the low teens  on accuweather verses the low 20's on weatherchannel.com
Any opinions on which site is more accurate ???

We are soooooooooooooooooooo over due to have early safe ice and for it to last the whole season.

The earliest I have ever fished here in Central, NY was Dec. 6th. That was in 1999.

then next few days and week or so have some ice cold temps, The next five  temperature lows are(staring on today Friday) are: 18 9  12  28, 31 . The highs for the same days are in the low 40's. As we all know it takes a few hours every day to warm up to those temps..almost mid day then it gets dark at 5 ;D

I've got to believe that these North Country temps will give us some us ICE.  Am I wrong ??? All I'm looking for is 3 inch's of ice. Come on

CarogaKid and I made it out on Nov 23 two years ago. That was fun. I think there are still some pics floating around on the iceshanty. I hunted yesterday in the Southern Adirondacks in a dusting of fresh snow and the swamp had skim ice ;)

Anybody here fish Meacham Lake in the winter.  I go out with my father in law a few times a summer and catch a few nice pike and a crap load of bass and suckers..  Hows the fishing there in the winter, still good off the beach for the land-locked salmon??

Guys, I'm new on here, at least to the new york part of the db.  I am planning on moving up to the malone area in the next few months and definatly need to find some fishing partners.  My wife loves ice fishing, but not quite as much as I do... :)

I found this on youtube and its a classic.  Make sure you have your speakers on and pay attention to the words.  If this doesn't get the blood flowing I don't know what will...

Talk to you later.

We fished there late last January during the first real cold spell to hit the North Country that season (after some seriously warm weather in late December, early January). It was about -15 when we were out there and we went off the boat launch and saw tracks where people had gone before. The week before we went had some serious sub-zero temperatures going on and on the drive up from the Hudson Valley we saw portable shanties on many lakes in the central and northern 'dacks. We didn't check ice depth when we went out. The wind was brutal and the snow was about a foot deep so we didn't go too far from the boat launch on Meacham. I remember joking to my partner when he was about to turn the auger on and drill the first hole. "Hey, wouldn't it be weird if the ice was only an inch or two thick?" He fired up the auger and began drilling. He broke through right away. The ice was three inches with about a foot of snow on top!! We spent the rest of the day listening to the ice groan and crack. No fish. I used to live in Malone and would venture on down to Meacham. Splake seemed to be a frequent catch. I get the feeling that lake my freeze up slower than some of the others.

bdub, I lived in Malone for three years! I am definitely going back up to hit the hardwater again. Good deer hunting up there. It's kind of a weird town. It's like a frontier town sort of. I miss it.
