it is a White crappie...  according to New York State Freshwater Fishing guide 2017/2018 photo and comparison of Back and white crappie on  page 58. They note that white crappie coloration can be similar to black crappie. So best to ID them by comparing distance from the eye to the dorsal fin with the length of dorsal fin base. That length is about the same in Black crappie,.... but the fin base length is significantly shorter than the distance from the eye to the front of dorsal fin in a white crappie.
Black crappie have 7 or 8 dorsal spines....
Interesting that a white crappie usually has 6 , but in some rare cases can have 7 dorsal spines according to NYS DEC.
Darn...grey crappie works for me lol

The big one looks like it is a white too... but it is hard to see exactly where the base of the dorsal fin ends near his thumb , but it does appear to be shorter length than the distance from eye to front of fin.

I’ve always noticed that every fish from here is lighter, not sure why. Walleyes are very silvery, perch are light (almost like a blue perch) and the gills can be very light colored as well...you go into the spillway and the eyes are the color you’d expect
[/quote]
It's because the stained/merky water. Goodyear lake is the same way . Blue walleyes we always said. Catch an occasional "blue" at the spillway.the fish tend to get darker when spawning time approaches

Ya, I saw features of each also. That's why I wasn't sure. Hybrid works for me. Black crappie + white crappie = GRAY CRAPPIE!!   ;) ;D

 :roflmao: grey crappie it is

This one made it worth dealing with the wind on Saturday afternoon. It's my second crappie over 16 inches this season.

Sorry I never did say Congrats  to you Coach54....got caught up in  checking all the black crappie , white crappie ID info....
One beautiful white crappie !! Hope you get another one like that at the WP crappie derby !

Shot out from Dorchester after work yesterday and sat on a bucket for about an hour and a half. Not a single mark. I froze. Time to get the ESKIMO EVO-1 back in the car for some comfortable (warm) weekend fishing

Fished Whitney point for the first time in years. Two undersize crappie, dink walleye and one about 15 inches. Sure has changed from the days when Crappie were constant action. All hit Marmooska tipped with mousey.

Crappies have been hard to come by this year...actually the last couple years. The eyes have been around though, I caught a dozen on Thursday, 8 of them being 15-17” but no keepers.

We got at least a foot of snow in the past week in Whitney Point and it's snowing again. so I'd say the lake has a fair amount of snow on it.  :'( :'(
