Title: Zach's 2005-06 Hardwater Season: Update 2-15 Smallmouth and other pics (Page 13)
Post by: ChenBassHead on Dec 06, 2005, 10:27 AM
Well, I made it on the ice today...sort of.  :P  I went over to Church Pond this AM with a friend and decided to walk out with the spud bar, to check the ice.  I punched through after a few tries from the dock, seeing that the ice was only a couple inches thick.  Discouraged, but not detered, I walked out onto a big white pine and found it to be solidly in place.  When I saw that the tree would hold just fine, I got my gear and started fishing!  ;D  The Vex read about 7 FOW...I had a couple fish look at the jig, but they were in a pretty negative mood.  But the main thing is that I went icefishing today! They're calling for tomarrow night to be down to -1 F, so the ice will form quickly!  ;D ;D

I totally understand.  I minored in electrical engineering in college and majored in deerhunting/ice fishing.  I went to school in St Lawence county so I was in heaven.   Unfortunately, I ended up finding a job in my minor rather than my major.   ;)

Is there any ice on Colby or Tupper/Simond?  My in-laws live there(Tupper Lake) and somehow never know if there is ice or not.  They are clearly not in the proper state of mind.  Nice pics, tight lines.

Well Mac, you're right about the lack of water in my area.  After college, I want to get a job doing something in the fisheries field.  Paul Smith's College has an amazing 99% job placement rate, so getting a job after graduation shouldn't be a problem.  Personally, I don't really want to live in the area I live now after college, because of the lack of opportunities in the fisheries field.  I'm hoping to live either up here in the Adirondacks, somewhere in the Champlain or St. Lawrence valleys, or out of state, in some place like Wisconsin, Minnesota or Michigan.  I have 3.5 years until graduation, so I'm hoping that I'm pointed in the right direction by then.  :)

Zach, check out the adirondack lakes survey corp...they've hired a number of my friends from SUNY Cobleskill to do some seasonal fisheries work...interesting work, decent pay, looks good on a resume.

I figured out after 4 years at school that fisheries work just isn't for me.

Prior to this fish, I had caught 3 pike that were exactly 30"...at home, there aren't many places to fish for pike, only a couple rivers and a lake, which is private.  Two of those had come from the St. Lawrence River, and one from Lower St. Regis Lake (the lake my school is on).

Nice pike you got there.

I was trying to look up information on this Paul Smith College place, at first I thought it was a novelty college more of a resort type college, but I see they have the basic accreditation by the Commission on Higher Education, but I was wondering if they have any other accreditations, any professional organizations by chance?  It does look like a peaceful quiet atmosphere to take in nature and the wildnerness.

Post by: ChenBassHead on Dec 18, 2005, 08:37 AM
Probably most of you have seen these already in Hood's post, but I'm going to post them anyway!  ;D

I finally got the chance to fish with Hood yesterday, and we decided to fish for some trout.  We met Matt (pikie) at around 6 AM, and headed out onto the ice.  There was about 9 inches of snow, with a bunch of slush underneath it, which made for a less than wonderful drag out to the fishing spot.  It took both Matt and I to pull his Jet-Sled, which was really heavy.  Finally, we got out there and set up our spread.

It didn't take long before I got this little brown on a tipup.
Matt got a flag and we all started taking off towards it, but all of a sudden Harry's tipup went off. The result was this nice pair of big, hookjaw male browns.
Matt got this nice rainbow, which was a surprise!
Harry and I each got another brown, and Harry got a nice perch on a tipup.

Matt lost a fish on the jig rod that was really taking some drag.  I missed a fish that was running like hell when I got to the tipup (I think when I set the hook, the fish only had the minnow it's mouth, and not the hook...  ::) oh well!  ).  As we were cleaning up, there was only one tipup left to be picked up, when the flag went off!  The spool was turning a little bit and stopped, and all of a sudden the whole tipup shook.  It was Matt's turn, so he ripped it out of the hole and set the hook.  The fish was on for a second, but he broke the leader when the spool didn't want to turn as the fish ran.  :'(

All in all, it was a great day of fishing.  It was great to get out with Matt once again, and great to finally fish with Hood.  I'm sure the three of us will have many more trips onto the ice together!  ;D

Okay, well I got back from school on Tuesday evening...which of course meant that I was going to be on the ice on Wednesday morning!  But, as luck would have it, it wasn't as easy as just going fishing.  I decided to hit up "the bluegill pond" for some early ice bluegill action.  Tim and George, you guys know where I'm talking about!  ;)  Well, I had to take my brothers car up.  When I got there, I realized that I had forgotten my Vex!  >:( :%$#!: ....so then, I decided to go and get it, and the car didn't start (turned out to be a bad alternator)... So, I said screw it and fished blind, which still resulted in about 30 gills, up to 10".  My camera batteries only had enough juice to take this short video.

http://media.putfile.com/Picture-01359 (http://media.putfile.com/Picture-01359)

Yesterday, I went out to a local reservoir and caught 40-45 perch and 2 bass.  BUt no camera = no pictures!  :'(

Hit Hunt's Pond early this morning, and fished until about 12:30.  I got on the ice at about 6:45 and was fishing by 7:15, after setting my tipups.
I started with a dink gill, then was surprised with my first crappie of the season...doesn't look like it, but was actually exactly 9".

I got a flag at about 8, but was bit off by a pickerel.  >:(

I then got into a few nice fat gills, 3 of which I kept for a fish sandwich.

I got another flag a short while later, and landed this small pickerel.

I continued to catch tons of smaller gills and perch, when this little guy hit.  Fought pretty well!
However, the real surprise was this: it was the same pickerel that had bitten my leader off! (Look closely at the mouth and you can see the line.

The gills and perch kept me entertained until this chunk hit...fought really hard on the UL!

Finally got one last flag...
..and landed this tiny little pickerel.

All in all, it was a pretty good day!  I ended up with 30+ gills and seeds, a dozen or more perch, 1 crappie, 1 bass and 3 pickerel.  I got on a little late, and missed the crappie bite...  :-\  I ended up keeping only 4 fish...3 gills and the crappie.  I caught a lot more keepers, but I only wanted enough for a sandwich for lunch anyway!  :)

Until The Next Episode of Zach's Hardwater Season,

-Zach

Thanks guys, I was just fine. My neck is still a little sore, but aside from that, I'm just fine!   As far as the truck goes...well, I'm afraid it's totaled...  :pinch:  The vehicle search comes once the claims adjuster gets back to us with the official verdict (although the guy who owns the body shop is an adjuster, and he said (as if I didn't know already!) that there's no way to repair a bent frame!  :-\ ).

This is basically what happened:  I was heading up the hill on my way to the lake, and moved over a little bit to the right.  As I moved, my left rear tire hit a SUPER slick spot, and it through my towards that ditch...I overcorrected and headed back towards that drop off/field/swamp on the right side, so I cut the wheel again and hit ANOTHER slick spot which pitched me directly at that ditch/bank.  I hit head-on, and as I hit (from what I'm guessing) the rear end lifted up as I rolled.  I ended up facing the wrong way, on my side/lid.  The hell of it is, the air bag didn't even go off!  The guy at the body shop said it's because it has an inertia switch, which only deploys if the vehicle comes to a sudden stop (in my case, I bounced and rolled).  Oh well, I was just glad to walk away unscratched!  :flex:

As far as fishing goes, I don't know when I'll be able to get on the ice...  :-\

Keep 'em on all fours  ;),

-Zach

Post by: ChenBassHead on Jan 13, 2006, 11:52 AM
Well, I've been out a few times since the accident, and have done alright...but nothing spectacular.

I've made a few trips up to the Bluegill Pond during the last week, but since I haven't scored on any true giants, I didn't want my picture taken.  :P  I brought my girlfriend out one day, and she caught a few gills.
This was her first of the season...She caught a few, and I caught maybe 15 or so in the hour that we had to fish before dark.  I went back the next day, and caught a ton, but again no monsters...biggest was 9", so I didn't take any pics.

On Wednesday, I fished Hunts Pond, from 6:30 AM (when I actually began fishing)to 5 PM...The fishing was hot at times.  I caught around 30 crappies, 2 bluegills and a pickerel before full light, all jigging.  I didn't take any pictures, because the action was literally non-stop...Then throughout the day it was slow, with periodic spurts of action.  I jigged up probably 30 gills and seeds (at least), another crappie, a handful of perch, and 2 bass.
This might be the smallest bass I have EVER caught...
I also got a few flags, although like the jigging, the action was slow and spotty. I had 2 BIG fish run me into heavy cover and break me off...I believe one was a big bass, and the other was a big pickerel.  I did manage to get a few pickerel and bass on tipups though, including this nice bass.
If you look at my left leg, you can see that it's wet.  That's because I had a can of Coke in my coat pocket that exploded, and ended of soaking my leg.  That kind of stunk, but luckily it wasn't very cold.
In the evening, I managed a few more crappies and a TON of small gills, in an hour or so.  Wasn't a bad day to be on the ice my any means.

-Zach

Went out with Matt (Pikie) and a couple buddies from school, and we had a pretty good day.  The pike were active, but we only landed a few...although we hooked and lost quite a few.  ::) :'(  The jigging was subpar, but there were also some real slob perch taken, along with smelt.

Matt got things started with this real fat pike, which taped out at 29"...not a bad fish at all.  :)

I had a good sized perch on a tipup all day (no bait to start, so we improvised)...Finally it went off, and I thought "HUGE PIKE!!!" as I ran to the flag...turned out to be a bit less than huge, only about 23-24".   ::)

Matt's friend also caught a real nice pike, that was about 31".  No pic on that though.

On a final note, this was the first time my friend Steve ever went ice fishing...he's hooked now.  He caught a bunch of fish jigging, but missed 2 on tipups.
Here he is sampling a really fresh perch.  :P

  Hey Zach, no offense intended
Just scrolled back to your accident pic's, looks like you did not have any serious weight in the rear of the ranger (i.e. sandbags, rock salt, etc.) That tire and your gear ain't gonna cut it. With what little I have learned in my years here in Michigan, having added weight in the vehicle allows for better traction on the roads, as well as keeping a light foot on the accelerator when road conditions are dicy. Glad you are OK though, yeah a little sore, but mostly a head full of experience to go along with the next TRUCK. EZ duz'n it

Heh, I know right where that is.  I remember seeing the perch spawn there in the wee hours of the morning during summer semester.

Well, this weekend was full of fun, as we held the IceShanty Adirondack Get-Together on Simon Pond (off Tupper Lake).
Here is Coldbum and I with our nice walleyes, 22" and 21" respectively.

Today, I headed out here on Lower St. Regis Lake for some pike action...while I didn't get any flags that resulted in landed fish, we managed a couple nice fish anyway.
I caught this nice pike on my UL, while jigging for perch...24" on 3 lb. test...taken on a jig made by Cold Feet.
My friend Ryan jigged up this nice bass, which was his first bass ever through the ice.

My flags are going to be left out all night, so hopefully I'll have a flag or 2 in the AM!  ;) :D

I knew that the hunting was good in New York, but i didn't realize that the fishing was as good! Great Pics! Since i will be away from my normal fishing ranges in VT I was hoping that you could give me some suggestions on were to go fishing over there at Paul Smiths. I love to fish for Lake Trout, Salmon, Walley, Northerns and of course perch and smelt! Any suggestions on were to go would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Zach, and keep posting those awesome Pics!   P.S. Any good deer hunting spots would be awesome too! just joking :)

Yeah, it was terrible...but ironically, Harry woke me up in the AM, saying "Let's go catch some walleyes"...after I got out of the truck, we were walking over towards my sled and he said "Oh yes, napkins!", and ran into the woods... :D  So I decided to check my tipups, since I really wasn't motivated enough to do it the night before.  I got to the other side of the island and... :woot:  :o FLAG!!   So I walk over and yank it out and that fish had taken out all my line, down to the knot on my spool!!  I yanked it out of the hole, and pulled on what felt like slack line for a while when all of a sudden it just stopped....damn fish had me wrapped around a log or something!  :%$#!:  So I wrapped my hand around the line, and pulled hard, thinking that either my line was going to break or the fish was going to come up...low and behold, the line pops free and out comes a 21" walleye!

Is it legal to leave tip-ups out all night unattended while you are not monitoring them?  (Or anytime?)

Post by: ChenBassHead on Jan 31, 2006, 12:58 PM
Went out last night to check my tipups...had 2 flags, with one being a bait tripped falg and the other, which had on a dead shiner, was stripped off the hook.  So I reset the one that still had bait, and left...

This AM, I went out and check my tipups again.  On the way out, my friend Wes, who had brougth his jigging rod, dropped his hali down a hole and BAM!, caught this nice perch.
So we continue down to the flags and he drops his jig in another hole...BAM!  His line goes slack, the result of a pike bite off... :'(
We finally get to the tipups, and I had a bait flag on the one from the night before...so I reset it and decided to check my tipups...I got to the last one and my bait had buried itself in the weeds...so I reset it about a foot higher, and we left...100 yards later, I turned around and the flag was up!  So I ran over to it, and pulled out this small, eater size pike.

Wasn't a bad morning afterall...the walk is killer, but it's a good spot!  :D

Is it legal to leave tip-ups out all night unattended while you are not monitoring them?  (Or anytime?)

From DEC site:
In New York State, general angling regulations limit anglers to two jigging lines (or hand lines) and five tip-ups in most waters. Each tip-up must be marked with the operator's name and address; the operator must be in immediate attendance when the lines are in the water.

Post by: ChenBassHead on Feb 15, 2006, 12:51 PM
Well, I haven't updated this in a while, because this past week I didn't fish too much.  But I have a few pics from today and the weekend before last.

Went out today to do a little jigging because it's so nice out.  The wind was a little heavy, but since it's coming out of the SW, it's actually sort of "warm."  As soon as I dropped a jig down, the bottom came alive with fish.
I caught a ton of perch in short order.  This was the best one, about 10"...nothing special, not even really sure why I took the picture...
All of a sudden the fish just disappeared...I knew there was a predator of some sort in the area.  All of a sudden a mark showed up just below my jig, and hit rather hard...The fight was on!
After about 5 minutes I landed this 18.5" smallmouth(estimated after laying it next to my rod), which is actually the first smallie I've ever caught through the ice.
Another shot...man what a fight!  :)

Last weekend, I jigged out here on Lower St. Regis and caught some nice pumpkinseeds.
Here's a 34" pike taken by a friend of mine...A real nice fish that weighed 10# even...

On Monday, I fished for a few hours with BCjenson, who was up doing work in Ray Brook.
Fishing was slow, but I did manage a nice 11" perch.  Again, not sure why I took the photo...Just to have the pics I guess!

On Tuesday, I went out with Pikie to do some smelt fishing on Upper Saranac...no pics, but we did catch 70 or so in about an hour and 1/2...I was also broke off by a laker...  :'(

Finally, some kitchen shots...
My bowl full of pike...Notice the perch fillets on top.  There are more perch and even a walleye in there somewhere.
I'm not a culinary arts major, and I don't have a ton of fancy breading mixes and stuff...but don't these pan fried pike and perch look great?  ;D
