What kind of fish are yall fishing for with using 40# plus line ?
I make leaders for pike and musky. My mainline in summer is 65# braid or 20# mono. 80# is probably light for musky, but I haven't had any issues.
Ohhhh , well yah thats good for trolling or casting in the open water for Muskies.. Its a completely different animal than Pike through the ice. 😀
Yeah, but I still made up some quick strike rigs for ice fishing with 40&50# fluoro. Worked well for me and I think fluoro gives you an advantage over wire.
Used to use the Palomar on everything, but recently started using the nanofil knot for 4 pound and lighter - it's a Palomar with one additional "overhand" run through the loop for lack of a better way to describe it. Only issue is you need to tie your leader to the swivel first, then tie the swivel to the main line. Once the leader is connected I tie my hook/jig/lure/etc. on.
