I only have hard side shacks.....I drill a hole for each corner......and attach about 12 inch piece of 2x4 to a rope and put it down the hole and then tie the rope to the corner of my shack......I'm sure you could do the same for a softshell.....

i like to drill 2 holes on the inside of the shappell fairly close to each other then i feed a ratchet strap in one whole and up out the other then ratchet down. i have a two man shappell and there is still plenty of room to jig or just hang out.

Get yourself a couple of ice anchors from your local sporting goods store.  Simple, light weight, cheap and they work.

At the St. Paul show there was a company that had a booth next to the Ice Shanty booth. They had some ice anchors based on the ice climbing anchors. They went in slick as snot. They are less expensive than the ice climbing anchors.

I have their card at home. I do not remember their name but I am going to pick up a couple of them.

I got the ht anchors last year but never needed them til yesterday and they worked pretty good.  They went in easy and held the shack the  only thing I might do is get a couple more so I can have one in every corner on the days that i need them.

question to the guys with clam ice anchors...  where on your sled did you mount these???  the instructions say both on the back???  the way i see it is if i mount one on each side, my shanty is not going to move as much???  i mounted mine with the holes and bolts already on my sled... the bolts on the sides close to the front that hold the brackets and poles for the flip over....this looks to be the best way to install for me...

Lots of good ideas guys :)

I use the ratchet straps/ 2 holes in the ice thing for the portable
and the 4 holes/2x4/rope for the hardside.

We always anchor the shacks down now.... after our 1000lb hard-side flipped over during 80mph winds a few years back :o

So when you're taking the shanty off the ice... you just cut the ropes level with the top of the ice and then leave them there to stay in the lake?? If I am wrong and this is standard practice... please forgive me, but I don't think I really like the sounds of that???

I am sure those 2x4's just float up onto shore after ice-out and some shorefront land owner collects all those 2x4 pieces and has a nice bon fire out of them during some cool spring or fall evening.  ;)

took a pair of clam anchors, cut the D-ring handle off, welded double nuts w /fender washer on top. use an old fashion WOOD BRACE ( the ORIGINAL cordless drill)
with a 1/2" driver in the jaws.( the kind used for sheet metal screws) - bought the wood brace at a flea market for a buck - the nut driver for 2 bucks at a big box lumber supply. . drives the anchors in real slick.
cheaper than a cordless drill, no fear of water damage, weighs slightly less.
uglier than two kinds of home made sin tho.

I have the Voyager model of fish shack.  I bought two sets of the ice anchors and mounted them in each corner.
I use the standard straps to anchor the shack.

I have some extra long straps that I bought,  I put the same ends the straps as the ice anchors have.

Now I can use the long straps to tie down my stuff when moving, and anchor the shack with the small straps if I need to.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

I'm going to try this method this winter.

drill 1"-2" holes at each corner.
get a metal pipe 1"-2" diameter with one end welded closed.
paint it white so it does not absorb the suns heat
insert the closed end in ice and let it freeze.
cap it off so it does not fill with ice and stuff
when you're ready to move camp remove the cap on the pipe
insert glowing coals from the wood stove into the pipe.
it should thaw the ice around the pipe so you can remove it

I've always used the wood and rope method and felt bad about it.
i think this should work well.

I have a couple of bailing hooks.  Drill a couple of holes 2-3 in deep. Then tie off to ropes to corner of shanty.

I watched them do about a zillion demos with the same two anchors at the St. Paul show, and they were still sharp at the end of day three.

They go in fast, and hold tight, even in mushy wet ice. They may be a bit expensive, but the are no gimmik.

I bank my house with the wet sluchy snow and ice from the holes I drilled in it and it freezes down.  Never had it blow away or over, but I also keep it attached to the snowmobile.

Look around for "Ice Screws" for mountain climibing. That's what these are. And they are not cheap.

These are a bit cheaper than the ice climbing screws. You get 2 for just under $40.

I think it is similar to the carabiners for climbing versus the ones you use for a key chain. The key chain ones say right on them "not for climbing".

I think the shanty anchor ones are not rated or tested for climbing. The company probably doesn't have to carry liability insurance against anyone falling from a cliff while using them.

They looked pretty impressive at the show. I am going to buy a pair.

A pair of the climbing rated anchors were over $70 at REI last time I looked. The ultimate anchor kit comes with straps too.

Glad I bought my anchor kit. Was really windy last weekend and was able to keep my shanty in place. I wish the kit came with two more straps and anchors. Would be nice to secure it on all sides.
