Lettering on portablr shanty?
« on: Feb 15, 2003, 06:48 AM »
??? Just purchased a Guide. Would anyone please advise the best way they found to fulfill Minnesota DNR requirements for putting your name and address on the nylon cover? Don't want to melt the fabric by using the wrong stuff. Thanks in advance.

Buy a back tag holder that you use for deer hunting and pin it to the zipper so you dont have to make a hole in the canvas.  You should place your driver licenes # on the tub also.  I have not done that yet because mine is new also.  Duct tape works good but I might make a plate out of aluminum and stamp the numbers and rivet the plate to it.

In MN you need to have two inch lettering on the shack near the door.  I used a marker on the clam I own.  My otter has a holder and I put store bought lettering on the back of a plastic sign.  You need your name and either your DL# or address.  A good plus of using marker is it makes it harder for someone to steel. if you leave it out for a quick run to town.

I checked with NY two seasons ago and they said no lettering is required on portables as long as you don't leave them over night (unoccupied). ;)

I think there is a new law (In Wisconsin) that requires even portable shantys that are removed daily to have the owner id on it.
Big Pete and I were both warned by wardens to get our id on them.

hey scott. I just called the DNR and you are right. even if you are in the portable shanty it must have owner ID on it. thats why they have those little pouches on the outside. interesting question that deserved to be checked out to keep everyone here in Wisconsin legal.

I just checked the regs on the Wisconsin DNR web page and for ANY shelters you do NOT need to display any information as long as the shelter is occupied or in use.  If you are on a border Lake that connects Wisconsin to Michigan, Minnesota or Iowa you MUST display the owner's name and address even if it is occupied, this includes Portables.  Wisconsin law states that the letters must be Block Lettering and at least 1" square and be of contrasting colors.   I would play it safe and have 2" letters for any lake in any state, this way you are covered.

Why not use a large "Sharpie" marker to write your name and address.
