loose line guide on rod
« on: Jan 14, 2010, 05:55 AM »
I have a loose guide on a rod I like. It's wrapped with thread. Do I have any options to some how fix it?
I never came across this problem before,
thanks

Clean off the old wrap, tightly rewrap with new thread (steal it from mothers sewing kit) and coat with laquer fingernail polish. Your choice of color! If not too bad, maybe able to just use the fingernail polish. Keep an eye out so drips don't occur and harden! Turn..turn...turn till it sets. Good luck! ;)

Use epoxy, the two tube kind, like 5 ton clear. If the thread is loose, just make a little batch and coat the threads and rod all the way around. Don't use too much or it will sag. If it does sag, you can grind it off.

Thanks alot guy's.  Before asking here I was thinking about using black tape  lol. I'm so happy it can hopefully be fixed without rewrapping.
thanks

Yup we're freakin genius' when it gets freezing cold outside and everybody snuggles under blankets by the fire we go out and sit on a frozen lake, with numb fingers to catch fish that I personally don't keep anyways! The only smart ones are the guys with the fancy-schmancy permy shacks...

If I'm not fishing or hunting right now, you can bet that I\'m thinking about it!

Where are you at?  There has to be someone around that would re-wrap it for you pretty cheap.  If you're close to me, I'd do it for free.

I didn't have nail polish available but I brushed on a super light coat of gorilla glue. It's water proof and also fine for freezing low tempretures. I'll let it cure for the next 3 days then test it.  Bottle says it's the strongest glue in the world,  lol.
And thanks again every 1

My wife has a favorite 5' rod that she uses in summer. The wrapping on her guides was coming loose and I epoxied all of them and now she is happy as a clam.

As a rod builder, I cringe at some of the hob-cob fix-it solutions out there.  Yes, a couple wraps of electrical tape just to get you thru the day.  But once home, have someone re-wrap the guide-it's cheap, done right and will probably be the last part of the rod to ever break again.  Just my opinion...

All it takes is a drop of epoxy between the guide and the blank.

Kind of like tying flies.  Just wrap new thread around it, tie it off and then seal it.  If you google "how to make your own fishing rod" you should find some demonstrations.

I would find a rod builder in the area to fix it.  On the other hand, a lot of the ice rods I have seen were not wrapped very well to start with.

I'm not wrapped too well myself...but I build rods. The epoxy solution will work...not too pretty, but it will work. I'd suggest a 5 minute clear. It won't take much, less than a dime sized glob. Mix it well with a toothpick on a piece of glass or other hard surface....mix it well!

Then just use the toothpick to spread it over the thread and at the base of the eye. A little dab will do ya!

Turn the rod every minute or so to prevent sagging.

If you're near Macedon NY I'll fix it right for you.
