Lake Trout hit very, very light. Can they suck the bait off the tip-up

Lake trout hit lighter than little baby crappie where I come from. I very rarely get a flag on my tipups, but catch a lot on my jig pole. When they bite, the line either goes slack or is added weight. Lots of times when I check my tip up, the bait is gone, and it didn't go off. If any other type of fish hits I get him because of quick strike rigs, but lakers don't even set the tipup off. How are they doing this to me? I know the tipup is set up right because I catch tons of pike and walleye on them.

The best system I have come up with is a very light action rod with a spring extension.The same set up I would use for perch,watch the spring ,rod  very rarely moves.
