Christmas Carp
« on: Dec 27, 2019, 09:15 AM »

My wife landed this beast after a 45 minute fight on 2 lb line. No idea how we got it topside. Wouldn't fit through an 8 inch hole. 30 inches and just shy of 20 lbs. It was a load of fun to watch her smile for the rest of the day.

What size hole did you have?

Started with a 4" hole, since we were fishing bluegill and crappie. Overlapped an 8" hole once we saw the size of the carp. Still didnt have a chance to fit. Had to connect three 8" holes to create enough room.

Scary to have bases spinning so close to 2 pound line. Impossible if you were alone. Nice job.

Forgot to mention, the fish dove and got itself hung up in structure 3 times! She got it out somehow 3 times! Plus there were a bunch of zebra mussels on the line when we pulled it up, which can be pretty sharp. More reason to wonder how the heck she landed that thing.

wtg!

great advertisement for the brand of line you used. maybe they'd give you free line for your story.

a trick i've been taught fighting them is to wet your fingers and squeak them on a taught line.

Congratulation on a super catch and landing on 2 lb. test. I had the excitement 1 yr. with a 10 lb. carp and 1 lb. line and landed it. You may have the biggest fish so far this year on IS. You the Queen of the ice. Hubby gets the assist well done.

Did you eat it?

I ate carp once in China at a fancy restaurant where my Chinese host ordered the dinner. It was ok, but not walleye. They cooked it whole and we picked it to pieces with chop sticks.

Did not eat it. She wanted to release it for someone else to catch, plus I have no experience cleaning or cooking carp. Carp aren't really a problem in the body of water pictured, so off she swam.

Holy crap that’s awesome!!! I didn’t even realize ice fishing for carp was a thing until this year. Is there any tips or tricks you can lend a beggar on how to catch them?! Lol

Not really! We were fishing bluegill and crappies. She caught this one with an 1/8 ounce spoon tipped with a few red spikes. I had a carp break me off earlier in the day fishing a tiny tungsten jig tipped with spikes. Weve fished these baits a million times and never caught any carp, but for whatever reason they were on it this day

Amazing catch on 2 lb line.  Did she catch that using the rod on the ice in the picture?  Everyone comments on the drags on the inline reels being poor.  That fish must have given the drag quite a work out on whatever reel she was using.

It was the reel the in the picture, which is made by 13 fishing. I use a similar reel by them and I'm not overly impressed. The drag seems kind of sticky and had me worried the whole time she was fighting it. At the same time, it got the job done!

Thanks for the reply.    I have one by 13 and one by cgi I like the inline reels but wish they had better drags.
