all sighted in,did my scouting ,hung my stands all thats left is to park my butt in it until i'm completly frozen to the point where all feeling is lost in my fingers and the shivering is so out of control that i couldn't make a good steady shot if my life depended on it and then it will happen .....

I got my stuff laid out and will be meeting up with Jiffyman early in the AM.  I'm very excited... I'll be going to bed soon to try to sleep.  There is something about cold early fall morning driving to the woods with a dunkins coffee in the cup holder... I can't describe it.

I was in Rileys in Hooksett last week picking up some .44 rounds. I had a Thompson Center Encore Muzzleloader in my hand. It was sweeeeeeet. All camo'd out, stainless, with a nice Nikon on top. It was $600 used. I've had 2 weddings and 2 bachelor parties to attend to this hunting season.  I walked.......I was bummed too. That thing was calling my name!  It took me the better part of an hour to talk myself out of that purchase.

I'm gonna put a bit more effort into taking a deer with the .44 this year.

I don't have much time to spare for Muzzleloader season. Too crazy right now. I thought it was a common courtesy NOT to get married during hunting season! Man o man.

I thought it was a common courtesy NOT to get married during hunting season! Man o man.
When I got married my wife had originally set the date for sept 15th. I got to thinking why does that date sound so familiar. I told her if she wanted any of my friends, family or me for that matter to show up she might want to think about moving the date up a week. She said "why whats wrong with the 15th". Well that's opening day of Bow season. She says "you got to be kidding me". We got married on the 8th.

I have to work on opening season for muskets which sucks. I just got off the phone with my buddy. We're heading up to Maine on Tuesday for a 2 day deer hunt! His father owns 144 acres on the Saco river. They have a bunch of stands already hung and everything. Reports have been good. They've scouted out at least 5 shooter bucks on property! I'm stoked!

It just goes to show the old addadge is true. "When life hands you lemons, make Blueberry cobbler!".

I'm gonna throw a trap in the truck, juuuuuust in case. [wishful thinking]

I spent some time yesterday getting my gear ready. I'm leaving tomorrow morning (after I vote) for Maine. My bags are packed. My gear is ready. Now for the sleepless night before!

I got the skinny yesterday. There are 4 of us going out on 144 acre parcel of land, half of which is open to the public and half posted.  One of the property's border is the Saco River. There are a good mix of swamps, forrest and fields. They've got 6 stands hung and trail cameras have captured 4 large bucks.

2 1/2 days of hunting ahead of me! Hopefully we'll be eating venison in the bobhouse this winter.

If I had to put money on what day the peak of the rut would be, it would be today. I just came home from work and saw quite a few bucks with does. I have not seen a single deer in a few weeks. Last year when I saw a bunch of bucks in one night on the roads, I found the most buck sign within the week.

i don't think your far off the mark but i do think its a little early yet... all the sign i've seen in the last few days is primarely immiture scrapes and  rubs.. ;) i don't think the does are in estreus quite yet but i'll bet in the next week the big boys will start getting stupid !!! also remember i'm in southern N.H. so you may be right on the money up in the north !!!!

a buck making a scrape dosn't make the does hot !! but like i said earlier your further north than where i hunt ...this warm front might put the brakes on it all i've been seeing scrapes for 3 weeks mostly made by immature deer but they are getting active for sure...i've seen 5 does in the last three days and none were being courted dosn't mean its not happening though

One "area" may be hot because of the buck to doe ratio in that area, but from past experience and what I saw yesterday 6pt wandering aimlessly through the woods nose to the ground on a mission....I'd say its on right now.
Dang!  60 yards right by me!  Wish he was 30 yards closer.  There's always tomorrow!  Good luck.

I shot a spike horn yesterday weighed 116lbs, Not sure what he was doing but he was definitely on a mission ran straight at me full speed stop 15 yards in front of me broadside. I sort of dropped him in his tracks as he ran 15 yards away, then he turned around ran back to where he was when I shot him and fell over.

Spent 6 of the last 9 days in the woods in or near M hunting with Jiffyman.  No tags filled yet, but I'm taking 3 days off from hunting.  Tim said it would be a good idea to chill out and regroup.  I agree.  I have next Thursday - Sunday off and will hunt all 4 days and then some until my tags are filled.  I just know when I finally get one, I'll be very happy as I feel I am earning it right now.   ;)  Congrats to those of you who have filled your tags.

Keep after him Doctor....you'll get him.  He'll make a mistake one of these days.  Let me know if you bag him.  I just took my daughter out with me tonight in NY.   First time for her in a treestand.  She saw one when I put her in a stand and was setting mine up.  She had fun and so did Dad.  We took a drive around after dark and I was showing her the deer in the field on the property.  She was in awe.  Look at them Dad!!! ....she kept saying.  It was uneventful in the stand, but she was kind of ....well .....being a kid and we didn't have anything come in, but its not about that at 10.  We just had fun together.

It's not like that here in NH on the seacoast... trust me.  Not with 60* weather during the day.  Hopefully we'll see that behavior over the course of this week and we'll capitalize on it.

According to the weatherman, a cold front is supposed too drop out of Canada over the next week or so and will be here for a while.with highs in the twenty's that means any snow we get will stay and make hunting a little easier.

Hey Finless....

I don't belive I said I was laughing at you. I can tell you that by Nov 10th, last season in the Monadnock Region, they were in full swing!  You hit the nail on the head with the Buck/Doe ratio. That in itself with spell out the peak and which bucks get to mate.  I would say, with all the buck movement/behavior I have been seeing out here, that if it has not peaked by now, I don't know anything.

Southern NH has always been differenent than any other part of the state I have ever hunted.  I would be willing to bet though, that if there are a few more really cold nights/mornings, you should see the sign of mature bucks increase!

Good luck bud!

I agree with finless in that I don't think we're really in the swing of things yet.  Deer don't care if it's November 9th or whatever.  We had some warm weather recently and I think that set them back some.  They're making some scrapes and some rubs, but not tons of sign.  I may be relatively new to hunting but I know what I see in the woods.

I'm not just focusing on the rut.  I've hunted 6 days of the muzzleloader season already, I am putting my time in.  We just haven't seen a whole lot.  We found some of the freshest sign on Sunday morning but opted not to hunt that piece of land Sunday night because there were too many of us, we would have just burned the spot.

Southern NH has always been differenent than any other part of the state I have ever hunted.  I would be willing to bet though, that if there are a few more really cold nights/mornings, you should see the sign of mature bucks increase!

I agree.  That's what I'm really hoping for.

Man, that's too bad Fishback.  Good for your buddy.  Don't worry, you're not the only one having a tough time.

I'm still hunting with the muzzleloader and I was out tonight.  Came home, cleaned it out and reloaded it, washed my clothes and packed the truck all ready to go early tomorrow.  I actually was north of Concord today and I saw a lot of scrapes.  No new rubs, but 5 or 6 good scraps all under overhanging branches.  Some probably done yesterday, some probably this morning, one of them was probably done last weekend.  I'm going back tomorrow to sit on stand hoping a dumb one will walk to my scent wicks.   ;D

Anyone else going out this weekend besides Jiffyman and I?

I'll be going out both Saturday and Sunday. I'm heading to Candia. There are 3 or 4 stands that we have hung. I'm hoping with that past cold snap, things will start to get moving. It's too bad it warmed up again though. This rain isn't helping the cause either.

After I go out hunting I'm heading down to Nashua to make my first batch of icefishing brew. I got a gift cert. to Incredibrew down in Nashua. I'm gonna make a nice icefishing Ale for this winter.

Tall 6 pointer harassing a doe today on my way to go hunting.  It was about 7:30a and he was in a field sanding near the doe.  Doe decided she didn't want to deal with him and started running all around the field.  He chased her until she finally bedded down on the edge of the field.  Doe didn't look completely interested just yet.  C'mon cold snap.

I thought this was an icefishing forum.  If I am not mistaken this thread talks an awful lot about hunting!  Isn't there a sister site myhunting or something like that?

There's alot of threads that go off topic. Personally I don't hunt much myself, but I dont see the problem with a thread or two about it?
There are guys on the I.S that have friends here and want to share their expieriences/pics. It's not like everyones out on the ice already... Soon as the seasons over and the ice is here, there will be plenty to post about.... ;)

Hey, I've been fed-up with gas thread for months....People still like it  ::)...what can ya do :-\...

www.myhuntingforum.com (http://www.myhuntingforum.com)  Some of us have migrated over there, but there is no where near the same amount of traffic.  Some people still post here during the summer when they should be at myfishfinder.com.  Hey... what can you do?  I don't see a problem with one hunting thread among a thousand icefishing threads because in the end, aren't we all sportsmen?

I am also not a huge fan of the gas thread either, so I choose not to post in it that often when I know it will annoy me.  Sometimes I just don't read the thread if I know I won't like the topic.

The new site is called iceshantymyhuntingmyfi shingmyanything.com ;)LOL

hahaha, well... yeah... it is like that sometimes  ;D

I think once you see everyone has their bait trapped for the winter and the first safe ice appears somewhere, a lot of us won't care about gas prices and hunting season will be over.  lol  at least in my case that will be true.

Don't get me wrong.  I don't have a problem with it.  I'm an avid hunter.  But I was just pointing out the obvious.  On this site there just happens to be an "Off-Topic" Shanty.

No malice meant by my last post. It just seems pretty apparent what's being discussed in a thread labeled. "Black powder opener tomorrow who's ready".

I don't mind off topic threads. That's the beauty about conversation...it can mushroom into something unexpected.

tee hee hee, what a hyjack that would be.

I'll be out again early tomorrow morning.  I have 5 1/2 more days of hunting.  Two tags, just hoping to fill one of them.

I went out Thanksgiving morning with a couple of buddies. I brought my bow just in case I ran across a couple of wicked winged warriors in the woods. I did. I saw 5 fat turkeys making there way up a hill towards a field. They were a good piece away. So...I tried to quickly flank them so that I could ambush them. I got up there. Got in position. I could hear them. They were so close. I waited and waited...NOTHING.  Those d**ned things are NINJAS! They are like assasins! They dissapeared with out a sound.

Another year a turkey slips through my hands on Thanksgiving. Last year was a heart breaker. I'm gonna get one though. I have another year to hone my poultry punishing skills.

they are my white whale. i've never harvested a turkey. for a bird that is soooo ugly and looks soooo stupid, they are illusive. i love how when your driving around you spot 15 of'em in a field but when you go hunting for them there's none to be found!
