Ice was sketchy, needed to get out there though, and not freeze! Had 7 Flags , 1 Bass, 2 Pickeral fished till pitch black and flicked on the halogens for some night action.

I do not recommend anyone getting on the ice untill there is 12 inches of  ice  :)

(leaves more early season fishies for CarogaKid and I to chase)

All kiddin asside. It is a personal judgement call..be safe, take precautions and pack the right safety equipment! I have fished from 2 inches and up. 2 inches is damn frightful, 4-5 inches is solid!

i was going to say, you two are usually the first from IS in NY on the ice :D

2"-3" is fine if your comfortable with it, but i wouldnt recomend going out on less than 4" alone

i've drilled through 2" of ice in the middle of sebago, i've driven on 5.5" with a truck and i've parked side by side with 5 full size trucks on 12".  now one day last march i drove on 18" and was never more nervous, it all depends on the ice at the time.

I've gone through.
Not fun.

I won't go out on less than 5" and really prefer 6" or more.

Heck, I really prefer 24"!!!!!

Mac
Good to be safe Mac, but by the time it's 24" around here all the good fishing is over. I like to start on 4-5 " myself ;D FH
Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

i was out in a rental hut on 4" early one season.  up by North Bay ON too.  wasn't my fave day fishing even though i caught my first ling.  i'm more comfortable once the ice gets to 6" .  wouldn't go out on 2" of ice!

I've fished on ice my dog wouldn't walk on!  She stopped where the ice changed from cloudy to clear.  There was about two inches but you couldn't tell because it was so clear.  It didn't help that 100 yards away there was a duck swimming around in the open hole.

I'm not so sure about 2" either, prefer at least 5".  But I would think that with the weight spread out ( as with a small, light weight shanty), it might help.  But you gotta go out on foot (less weight distribution) dragging it out, setting it up, and checking tip-ups.  Don't think that would be so safe.

I wouldn't trust my dog to determine safe ice.  I've seen her get her feet wet way too many times!!!

My father (6'0" 220lbs.) and I (5'6" 150 lbs.) have been on 1 1/2" of crap ice. I didn't stay on it for too long, just about s*** my pants when the ice started cracking. Only had to go about 10' to get to shore.

my dog likes to swim to much to trust her about what is safe!  And now i have incentive to lose a little weight...2"?  not sure, thats a little dicey, prefer 3-4 as a minimum.  I dont like 3 cranks of the hand auger and hitting water.

What would drive ya to even go on ice you know is thin  ::) 4'' and you can find me whacking the shoreline with a stick looking for safe spot to access  ;)2
