JAW JACKER
« on: Jan 13, 2014, 07:06 PM »
Just picked up 4 jaw jackers and plan on trying them out at Canyon ferry tomorrow if the wind settles down tonight, was wondering if anyone had experiences with them, primarily targeting trout. Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

I make my own version for under $6.00 and they work absolutely incredible.  When a fish bites, it's hooked.  I call it my "lip-ripper".  Got the idea from a guy in Bozeman.

I have 2 of them as a gift from my girlfriend. I pretty much only use them to target trout and they seem to work really well for that. Be careful when setting them so you don't put an eye out. Depending on the species and how they're biting you're going to want to fiddle with the trigger tension. I usually set it pretty stiff for trout that way any dinks are less likely to set it off. The best part of the JawJackers is the little Ice Fry jigs that came with it. Rig the fire tiger color horizontal with just enough worm to cover the hook shank and you'll find yourself in some fish.

Going to be at canyon ferry again tomorrow I also have a few of the automatic fishermen I've been toying with. Ill likely be off hole in the wall. The ice took a turn for the worse so be careful tomorrow.

Going back to the dikes, fishing has been excellent as long as the wind will cooperate, will leave report on fishing and the jaw jackers.

Fished the Dikes today for trout. 3 rods with jaw jackers and 3 rods without.  I landed 8 trout with the jaw jacker rods and 2 trout on the rods without. Needless to say I am sold. I just placed an order for three more jackers - what use to be bites are now fish on the ice!

The whole concept of immediately setting a hook on a biting fish is what these things are all about.  I've used my lip ripper for ling, pike, and trout with great results . . . phenomenal is more like it.  As for lite biters like walleye and perch they don't perform as well as a tip-up or jig pole but they still catch fish.

For light biters I'll put a little slack in the line between the reel and first eyelet. It allows the fish firmly take the bait and move off a little before triggering.

I second this for the light biters...i've caught 3" perch with my jaw jacker.  I love this tool!

Hey Buckshot, thanks for loading the pics of a "lip-ripper".  The version shown above works incredible.  Made from 1x4 pine.  Rod holder is 1.25" sch. 40 PVC w/45 degree elbow.  Overall length is 20.5".  Trigger is a bent coat hangar @ 6" overall length.  Costs less than $6.00 and takes about 30 minutes to fabricate.  You could use scrap materials and build it for less.

We use a pickup spring from a hay bailer and drill a hole in the handle of the fishing pole. This gives her just a little more snort on the jerk!

Just for clarity, truck on the rocks, is non sequitur in the context of " Jaw Jacker".

Making up shop drawings for the "lip-ripper" above.  Should be available early next week (would be sooner but I'm smothered in other projects plus I'm fishing this weekend).  Email me if interested . . . no charges expected.
