Well, HoleJacker and I sat on the Pond from 8:30 to 17:00. We each caught one trout and I caught a 3" perch. Pretty slow day indeed!!!

Well, today Oldschoolben, HoleJacker, jh179380, his buddy C, and myself caught a few fish. I iced 13 trout and one perch today, perch was only 3" or so. Oldschoolben iced several trout, a few perch and one of those was about 6"!!! So I have high hopes for a chance to ice a few good ones myself. I caught the LARGEST fish I've ever caught in the Pond, today. This toad beat the one last week, comin in at 27" and 7.2 lbs!!! Good times, as usual!!!

Thought I would stop by after deliveries to Missoula today and try this little piece of H2O. Showed up bout 3:30ish, only had my spinning gear but was able to find some jigs in my car and as luck would have it had some rotten maggots left over from a trip to the Ruby earlier in the week. Saw 2-3 people out on it and one guy was nice enough to offer me his ice auger, i declined. Found some fresh holes that I could kick the ice in and start fishin. Rotten maggots still work I guess because bobbers were bouncin immediately. Had several bites in the hour and half I was there, finicky biters, but was able to ice a 10-11in cutthroat. Was using basic jigs and rotten maggots nothin special. Come to think of it, the guy who offered his ice auger kinda looked like Pyro, was that you?

Last time I was at the pond was on the 22nd. If you see a red Quickfish3 on the ice and a jacked up white 4Runner in the parkin lot, chances are it's probably me. I'm glad you had some action with your maggots ;)

i c & I fished Smith Lake all day yesterday (23rd), with little success.

Maybe we'll see ya on the ice, soon!

Hit the pond today with a friend. did fairly well, he caught 4 while I caught 1, sort of, it came out of the hole and went in after a couple of seconds trying to get him away from the hole. hey, it happens! couple others on the ice, talked to one guy, said he caught a few. although it was a slow day, we still caught fish, and heck, im happy if I can just get on the ice!  ;D BTW Ice is 5-7 in thick, and thankfully the ice was very quiet today since it was my friends first time ice fishing. just wait till he gets a crack going right between his legs!  ;D Well, thats my ice report, and a little added info, they seemed to go for orange jigs today, tipped with maggots. they're in all depths cruising along so hope you all get some fish!

Hey Pyro I am up in AK at the moment but I will be back this weekend.  Are you interested in hitting the pond up on Thursday morning?  I need to be back in Missoula by 2.

So, it's already 9:30, and I'm in no position to hit the pond this mornin. We're headed to Kalispell for a New Year's Eve party at 14:30 today, so I need to get ready. I saw a couple of rigs at the pond yesterday, I wonder how they did.

As for Thursday, I'm sure I'll see ya there, unless a trip to a "better" fishery comes up. I'm down to hang out til 1300!

I fished Beavertail pond with the girlfriend on the 24th.  Started on the North side and fishing was awful.  Decided around 10ish to move over between the last "island" and the shore.  Sat for 10 minutes before one of the set trout poles went crazy.  We pulled it through the ice and with the exception of steelheads, it is the biggest trout I have ever caught.  Looking at the picture on here of the 7 piunder, I would gauge it at in excess of 10 pounds.  Had to hold it by the tail for the picture.  Unfortunately the camera decided to take a poo and didn't record either one of the pictures we took.  So...I am relegated to the fish story arena.  Also, the lady kicked my butt catching a nice bass, 4 or 5 trout and a pot full of what appeared to be jigs until they wiggled and were actually perch.  We also caught on nice cutthroat on the set trout lines.  All together, about 30 fish and a lot of fun for me and an inexperienced ice fisherperson (the girlfriend)  This is a great place for a family outing especially with kids.

Hey Grizinidaho,
Sounds like one heck of a day and there are certainly some monsters in there!  At what depth were you catching the trout at?

We were fishing with 3 lines between the west shore and the first island and one about 10 feet to the north of that setup at 3-6 feet with what I have had luck on in the past at Canyon Ferry, the best one seemed to be a black jighead with a bumblebee body and fake plastic wings.  The green and black was ok.  Put on Wax worms and suspended 6-8 inches off of the bottom with bells to hear a bite.  The other smaller trout and other fish were 15-20 feet to the south of that setup between 8-12 feet.

Thanks Grizinidaho!  Thats exactly what I had been doing, there is a shelf that runs into the bay and if you can get your line on that shelf its pretty non-stop.  Ill let you know how it all goes and if you see us out there in a blue tent, come stop by and drink a beer.

Hwy 93 south to MiZooLA
I-90 east to exit 131 or so Beavertail Hill State Park, hang a left (north) at the stop, then the first road to the left (west) is the Pond.

Good luck!

Update

I heard that Harpers had a lot of water between 10" of snow and the ice. I was a little concerned, so I asked i c if he could check the ice before we all head out to the Pond tomorrow, he was nice enough to give me a report, and we're good to go!!!
i c told me that the ice looked good, and he didn't come across any slush!!!

WOO HOO!!!

See y'all on the ice tomorrow!!!

Hopefully next time it will be better!

Hey Pyro,
If you get the opportunity check to see if the fish are hitting in between the islands and the boat ramp.  Its supposed to be pretty deep in that region.  Also if you are there in the evening they supposedly like to hunt in shallow flats.  I will be there tomorrow with the same crew, hopefully.
