Title: Vexilar Proview Transducer Swap
Post by: kayl on Jan 25, 2018, 10:12 AM
I was finally able to get out with my FLX 28 last week and I was not very impressed with it. I did some reading and found that lots of people didn't like it for shallow water, which is what I'm mostly going to be fishing. I also saw that people said that Vexilar would swap out the Proview for a Tribeam, so I called Vexilar and was told that they absolutely do not do that. Anyone who has done the swap have any info to help me out?

They did mine a month ago. The transducer HAS TO BE BRAND NEW, UNUSED. If you loook on the manual it will state that they will swap it out.

A buddy emailed Vexilar last week about buying the FLX 28 and asked the same question. Vexilar emailed back and said you can NOT swap the Proview for the Tribeam. I have be thinking about buying the FLX 28 myself, but don't like the idea of turning up the gain to change the cone. More gain equals more interference. I don't see how it would not.

does not equal more interference..fwiw.flx 28 has more interference rejection settings than any on the market.if your talking clutter.nope not using the right settings for the situation.on the ducer swap thing..i don't see why vexilar would have to exchange ducers, buy a vexilar with the ducer that a person wants with the right ducer for your style of fishing.if a  guy doesn't want the proview buy a model with a tribeam,19 or 12 degree.

Vexilar did a swap for me since I had a brand new ducer. The tribeam has worked great in the shallow, weedy waters and personally, I feel is better than the proview in that situation for me. With that said one thing to keep in mind is that the tribeam hooked onto a FLX28 will cause a couple issues. The biggest one for me is that in waters over 40 feet you're not going to "see" smaller jigs well. Personally was in 42" of water and had my jig cutting in and out. Spoke with Vexilar and was informed that since the crystals are smaller that there basically isn't enough of a ping to cause a good return on the jig. This would be regardless of the cone angle, which I tried all three to be sure. Additionally, auto range can sometimes be a little wacky with it. Do I regret the switch, maybe a little, however since the majority of my fishing is shallow, i prefer the tribeam over the proview which is a 9 degree.

vexilar built the flx28 around the proview, basically its why they come with them.fwiw.i have never lost my jig at any depth with the proview or tribeam on any model vexilar tho.3mm fiska.

Ugh.  I'm on my second season with my FL-22HD and pro view.  The pro view is okay in deeper water, but I am struggling in 10' and shallower.  Yes, I have tried low power and 20' range (FL-22HD has 6 manual depth ranges. Zero to 10’, 20’, 30’, 40’, 50’, and 60’).  The 22 doesn't not have "weed mode".  Yesterday in 9' I drilled a second hole for the transducer an inch away from my jigging hole because the bluegills keeps wrapping up in the cable.  Even that close to the transducer, I had a heck of a time seeing my jig, and I played with the settings a lot.

I think I may buy a Tri-Beam.  I'll keep the pro view and do some comparing.  Even in deeper water I get fish that just appear right before they hit.  Personally, not sure I like a 9 deg transducer.  I have watched all the Vexilar videos and read all the discussions, so please don't tell me I don't know what I am doing.   :)  I have over 36 years in the electronics profession, and I understand a bit about how transducers work.

I should have swapped for a tri beam when new, but I wanted to make the pro view work.

Or maybe a 12 deg would be a good compromise?

ive got a little demo pics of running my flx28 with proview in 9 ft somewhere on here without using weed mode, however I have not put my my proview on my fl22hd.i run a 12 degree on that.i run a pro view on my fl20 now with no problems and put my tri beam on my fl18..they all work.dont know I can add much to this proview/ different ducer options topic anymore.get whatever works for ya I guess.

Try an "S-cable". Worked for me.

If you decide to go with a tribeam let me know. Might end up getting rid of mine if I sell off my 28.

You were able to get nice thin lure returns in 9-14' of water?

I can without a s cable.thats for fl8se that have no lp mode. Theres a few  pics of 9 to 11ft of water with different setting comparisons running a pro view ducer..https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=353160.0

I hated the proview on my fl18 on lake winnipeg, so last year when I bought my flx28 from vexilar I had them switch it to a 12 degree, wish I would have went with the 19 degree, I just ordered a flx12 as its and I wanted them to switch the 12 degree to a 19 and they wouldn't do it this time
