His name is Scott Johnson and owns the welding shop in portage mi.  Field and stream,  I would be very surprised as he has only made a few of these.

The e-article was called "Killer Decoys"...Here is a link to the pic.  Looks pretty similar.

You are correct, my cousin did make that spear as well. His cabin near Cadillac isnt too far from the guy highlighted in the article.  They are buddies and he obviously is a fan of the Johnson spear.

This is my second attempt at making a spear this one came out good. It throws great and I have to give the fish several kicks to get it off of the spear. The whole spear is mild steel, the barbs are 3/16’’ round stock TIG welded on, the tines are 1/4’’ round stock, the center hub is 1 1/2’’ round stock and the handle is 1/2’’ round stock. The spears weight is 8 1/2’ and overall length is 62’. Besides the barbs the rest of the spear is MIG welded. Any comments /criticism is welcome. I want the next one I build to be better so fire away!!!!

Not a great picture. 7 1/2 foot. 10" wide. I had it electroplated so it won't rust. Seems to work.

I hate to see things die for the year, so here's a couple of pictures of a spear I just finished.  It is 2 inches from the tine points to the back edge of the barbs.  The head is 9 3/4 inches wide.
