Reaction to tip up spool
« on: Jan 23, 2018, 11:49 AM »
Hey guys, Don't fish them often but find myself missing more hook sets on walleyes than every other fish I fish for..   Live in Ct so walleyes don't get huge here 18"-26" avg fish mostly,  small inland lakes.  I fish with 3" shiners on tipups (heritage lakers) with a single #4 gama hook at night.  When you get to the tip up what do you do?   I'm always afraid the fish can feel the spool.   Would I better with polar tip ups?

- If the spool is moving slowly should I not touch anything till he stops and starts again?

- If the spool is not moving at all?

- If the spool is peeling line out about 20 MPH?

-When do you lift up the tip up?

From what I have found walleye, very rarely stop, unlike northerns who make a second run

So how long do you give him before you set the hook.

I use circle hooks so no need to set the hook. Just start pulling the line in and they are usually hooked in the corner of their mouth. It has been a few years since I have used tipups though.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I would not use circle hooks for walleye they tend to take bait very slowly. if its turning slowly I like to wait till it stops then starts and then when it stops again set it. if its not moving wait 5 minutes then pull tip up and check for weight on the line. if its flying out set immediately.
