Closest Out of State Locations
« on: Jan 03, 2007, 11:19 AM »

On the chance that NJ temperatures do not get below 50 degrees this winter, what would you suggest as the best out of state locations.

Coming from Essex County, either NY or PA are a possibiblity.

Do you have any thoughts on one over the other - shortest drives, price for out-of-state licenses, other tips and suggestions.

Hopefully, we don't have to use this, but just in case.........

TIA - Russ

Right now I believe the closest locations here in the East are Northern Main or Northern Michigan/Wisconsin. >:(

there is or was ice way up North in NY by VT. So you are looking at a  5 to 6 hour drive. Main you are looking at a 8 to 9 hour drive

I made it up NY state this past Sunday ... 4 hrs each way. I was getting desperate and JAw is running out of time before he goes back to AZ. We hit a small lake with 3 1/2" of ice and you could get out about 100 feet or so before it dropped to 2 1/2". Managed to jig up pickerel and perch.

I'd be surprised if the ice will be 2" this weekend.  :'(

Just Got back from Maine.....8 hr drive to the western mountain region.  The ice was scarce there too but I found around 4-6 inches on a few ponds and smaller lakes

Thanks for the info - I'm going to take a look at that lake Fred suggested.

Bad sign yesterday when the dogs were laying around with their tongues hanging out.  Not what we want to see in January!!!!!

I feel your pain jigAwhopper! As I left for work this morning I saw a frozen puddle in my driveway and got my hopes up only to find out the temp is supposed to go back up again. Maybe next year will be better. Any way have a safe trip.

NJ Ice Hunter, You're forecast looks like a good one.  It looks like they are calling for pretty cold weather to arrive by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.  Let's hope it stays !!!  This SUCKS ...  I swear if we get fishable ice by February 1st or thereabouts, I am going to fish every day for a month !!!  Work will have to wait.  I know here in Central Jersey,  Davidson's Mill Pond is usually the first to freeze up.  Which places ice-up the quickest in Northern Jersey?  Anyone with info. I appreciate it.  Thanks.

Some of my lakes here in Highland Lakes are skimmed over as of yesterday.  This weekend with the cold rain and possible wind will hurt them but there is gonna be a sever temp drop Monday night. Highs are going to be in the 20's  to low 30's for a week with lows in the single digits and teens.  I plan to be on the ice locally by next sat 1/20

If your private lakes freeze by the 20th then ShawnM's lake should too, but I say no way Hopatcong freezes by then. It didn't freeze last year and I don't see it freezing this year either, not with the temps on this roller coaster trend of up and down. Shawn and I fished only once on his lake last year. The rest of the time we went to Highland lake in NY.

With what accuweather is forecasting for the next 15 days the State Park will be safe enough...Budd will be ready to go to...the cold weather is supposed to start Tuesday...10 days of cold temps is plenty enough for good ice to form...im so ready

NJ ICE HUNTER, when you talk of lakes freezing, (skim ice) near highland lake, are you talking NJ or NY?

Budd is usually my first ice spot. Either there or local ponds and small lakes that are wind protected. Looks like even with the cold temps predicted the poconos might be the move for the first trip. Hopefully things will pan out as predicted, and I could optimistically anticipate gettin on some ice 1/20 or soon thereafter.
