How often do you guys actually get out to fish? If you had nothing holding you back, how often would you ideally fish?
I am able to get out a handful of times a month due to family and work but would fish at least 4-5 days a week if I was able.
-
I get out a few times a month due to work and family. I'd be out every day if I had the chance.
-
Before a wife and child I had years when I was ice fishing everyday from around December 20th through early March.
I had a year when I muskie fished for 45 straight days, then had to take a day off because of some wicked thunder storms and tornadoes. Then another 45 or so straight days. There were also years in the early 2000's when I'd be on a trout stream every day for two or three months straight without missing a day.
I was working full time through all of that so those weren't "full" days but I was out for at least 3-4 hours every day and on days off I was putting in 12-16 hour shifts with a few 24 hour marathons thrown in for good measure.
-
I am at that point in my life when I can get out as much or as little as I care to. Some weeks that is every day that week. Some weeks that is only once that week. I certainly enjoy fishing, but having the option to get out at any possible time, means I can pick and choose. If I don't feel like fishing that day or at that particular moment in the day, I don't. Who knows, two hours later I may grab a pole and head to the river. ;D ;D I also have other hobbies to keep me occupied.
-
i fish over 100 days a year. main reason i live where i do is the proximity to world class fishing.
-
Before a wife and child I had years when I was ice fishing everyday from around December 20th through early March.
And now?
-
Not often enough!
-
If I wanted to...just about everyday. ;D
But my body ain't that tough and I do need to rest up more and more. Once or twice a month is good enough for me now.
-
1-3 times a week. If scheduling wasnt an issue I'd probably do 3 times a week and be fine.
-
And now?
Not as often as I'd like.
-
Try to get out once for the whole day at least once a week but I like sledding as well, so when we have snow I take the sled out and (coyote hunting) so will do a bit of both each week. I have a flip over tent don't go out if its colder -20 got a knee that doesn't handle the cold to well anymore. I live in a small rural town so fishing and hunting are only ten minutes away which make some short quick trips and rides easy.
-
not as much as id like but in order to pay for all the fishing/hunting gear work is a must.
-
I'm retired, so providing there's safe ice, 3 mornings a week. Sometimes 4.
-
Not as much as i would like.
-
Never enough
-
3 times a week unless work and family screw it up LOL
-
I had plans on getting out this evening but am currently awake with my toddler. We will see.
-
I try to get out 3 times a week at least. With 1 of the trips to a lake I have never fished, or haven't fished in 10 years.
-
Ice fishing about 4-5 times per week Summer 5 times a week with 2 different lakes a day on Sat and Sun. So 6-7 times per week. Yep that's all I do is fish ;D
-
semi-retired now, so I try to get out at least 3 days a week

-
once or twice a week ;D
-
i try to go 4 times a week. if we have ice ::)
-
Once per week is enough for me. I go out most Saturdays for 4-5 hours.
-
not often enough..still waiting for safe ice here in pa.
now with 12inchs of snow on it and rain it the forcast
god knows when it will be..
-
3 to 4 times a week and my wife wished it were more. Those that are retired understand. ;D. I have already been on 1 weekend trip and have 2 more planned in the next 3 weeks. Life has been good this season...and so has the fishing.
-
Not enough. If I could I'd ice fish every day of the year.
-
(DON'T LAUGH)
2-5 trips a year usually is all I get. One reason is the distances in Montana between lakes, the other was college and now work. I'm happy if I get a few trips in a year, but I've been resourceful and dont have a great amount invested in my gear either. I prioritize elk hunting over all else (which only lasts 6 months in Montana ;) ) then fishing after that. Work on ranches in Nevada 8 or so months a year, so I do like to spend time with the wife doing other things besides ice fishing too. A spearing trip and a few trout or walleye trips a year and I'm a happy man!
-
3 or 4 times a week. But the ice must be 4" or I'm not going.
-
As much as work and the wife will allow. :roflmao:
-
Every 2 weeks if I am fortunate, with a wife and 8 month old at home.
Ideally? Every day. I'd be out every day.
-
Anytime I want ;D
-
Anytime I want ;D
X2 as I am retired
-
I can be selective, so usually don't go fishing unless it is warmer than 10 below 0 F, above 0 F is even better. I don't like much wind at those temps as I prefer not to use a shelter unless I am really getting bored (like today) and am forced into it.
-
I like to think about 3 times per week, but in reality it probably comes out to about once a week. But my ice season is normally the end of November to beginning of April.
-
Usually every weekend from Nov 29th to April 1. By the end of the season I am ready for open water!
-
Unfortunately only get to fish every other weekend due to my wife working And me staying home worth the little ones.
-
Even though it is one of my favorite activities, I only get out a few times each year -- an overnight plus 3-6 additional days. If I were retired and still mobile that number might double. We have lots of family stuff going on, volunteer work, and *gasp* other hobbies. With early ice in maybe mid-December on a good year, and a self-imposed season end at Presidents Day, it's not a bad number. I probably don't have the energy for more than 2 trips/week.
If I can get my few trips in with at least one overnight and one or two fishing dates with the wife, then like Cowboy I'm happy.
-
My schedule with work being seasonal, allows me to get out however it's not always that easy with life getting in the way. Did have an interesting year with licenses in NJ, Penn, NH and Wisconsin so far this year so I'm pretty satisfied with my winter of 2018- 2019 so far. Open water is a little tough, as much as possible, but my favorite is drilling! Would be out 4-5 days if possible.
-
Fishing is high on my priority list but not higher than investing or saving. So I budget 1 trip a week because I have a long drive. Then kids stuff gets in the way, wife stuff, family stuff. Some day I will move to where I can fish for 3 hours a day, 7 days a week. Or duck hunt 3 hours a day, 7 days a week. That will be ok.
-
About 10 times a year
-
Ice fishing, usually a couple times a week.
Not ice fishing, I take my boat out about 3-4 times a week depending on the conditions.
I've went twice this week so far and will be going Saturday also :P
-
Every weekend usually.
-
I try to get out once a week, family doesnt always allow that with kids sports and stuff. Every weekend is spent on the ski slopes for the kids, as long as the wife doesnt mind taking them one day by herself, im fishing. My daughter gets her license in a few days, that may really help me out lol.
-
I live on the southern end of the ice fishing area. I go any time I can get away and the ice will hold me. Unfortunately some years that is only a few times. Last several years I have went at least 3 times a week.
-
3 days a week, it would be more if I didn't have drive so far to where I like to fish. I vote to move all non fishing related family gathers until ice out.
-
Not as much as I wanted the last two years... hoping to average 1-2 times a week this upcoming season.
-
Not enough..im almost a weekend warrior now.
-
I fish 100-120 days /year. Of that prolly 40 days is ice fishing. Thats with a full time job and a wife. My retirement day is Dec. 20th, so I plan on fishing a bit more. ;)
-
Average 4 days a week
-
Maybe 12 times a year for open water and about 1-2 times a week during ice season with a couple 4 day long trips north mixed in as well. I am in central Iowa and usually don’t get much ice fishing in until after the first of the year due to my work being so busy toward the end of the year. From January on I go every chance I get because some years we don’t have good ice for very long.
-
Not as often as I'd like.
Amen brother
-
I would say I usually get out 15 - 20 times per hardwater season.....Last season being the exception, I was not able to get out at all.....We had a lot on our plate September 2018 thru March 2019 when we made the decision to build a new house & move away from our hometown.....That ended up taking about 3 months longer than expected because of the weather & other minor delays.....The fact that I didn't get out was purely by choice as I could have went & got my gear out of storage.....All in all, quality of life is much better now & I'm looking forward to getting back on the hardwater this season !!
-
I fish 100-120 days /year. Of that prolly 40 days is ice fishing. Thats with a full time job and a wife. My retirement day is Dec. 20th, so I plan on fishing a bit more. ;)
Retirement blowout party on the ice?

Retirement blowout party on the ice?
Winter Solstice Retirement Blowout Party! ;D
-
5-6 days a week each morning. Sometimes every morning. So lucky to only work the afternoon/evenings.
-
It all depends on the weather. Being retired I can be selective as to when I fish. No more super windy or sleety days for me.
-
Everyday I feel like it. Winter layoff. I love seasonal work
-
5-6 times a week, virtually every week ice is good
-
Once per week, on Saturdays.
That's about all I need. I like sitting on the couch and relaxing on Sundays..
-
Not enough
-
Being self employed I choose my days by the weather. So much easier for travel and enjoyable on the ice. Try for a couple days a week during ice season.
-
being now retired at least 5 days a week. it seems it took a long time to get to hunt and fish when I wanted. ;D
-
Try for once a weekend from ice to ice out. Usually works give or take.
-
Last year I spent 40 nights on the ice, which adds up to 120 days.
-
My wife and I own our own business. She has always let me fish / hunt whenever I want to. She knows I’m not the same person when I don’t go. On the flip side of that, I make sure our world is taken care of before I go.
Keep priorities straight, and go as often as I want to.
-
Last year at my lattitude, (Indy), I had 36 hours of safe ice - 4"clear ice- I got out twice.....
fish on,
rivereddy
-
About 25 time per ice season. Now that my 7year old son love ice fishing, I’m hoping that number goes up by a lot.
-
too many to count. i live 2 min from champlain.
