walleyes feeding on smelt
« on: Jan 12, 2011, 10:37 PM »
I was wondering what kind of lures look a lot like a smelt. I caught some nice walleyes this weekend and they were all packed full of smelt that were about 2"-3" long... The only things I have thought of are jigging raps, moonshine minnows, chubby darters, lindy darters, heddon sonars, vib-e-lure, ... is there some kind of spoon out there that hang horizontally that resembles a smelt?

I don't know of any spoon that will hang horizontally and look like a smelt.

Jigging raps would be your best bet.

Just try to match the color of the bait fish,  see how that works first.

A new lure I've used some this year I'm impressed with is the Renosky darting shad.
Don't think it was intended as an ice lure, but it works.
Has a good 'holographic' flash to it & it's a soft plastic, so a nice change from the normal hard bodied jigging lures.
Here's a pic of the one I've tried...I've seen them in a white/pearl mirrored color too.

Really like the flutter the twister tail gives it.
If you ever get hit with a bucket of fish, be sure to close your eyes. ;)

why don't you just try a dead smelt? I don't know how many fow your fishing in, but I'm sure if you use a jig head and hook them through the mouth and out the top of the head it'll work for you.
Still counting.....

I might have to give this a try. Don't know why I didn't think of it myself...  ::)

Not sure if they would work, but those Live Target Golden shiner {lipless rattle bait} might get a few walleye.
Just have to match the color to the smelts the walleye was feeding on.

Look at some of those Storm soft plastic molded lures.

I'm sure those new Northland Live Forage Minnow Fry Traps would look like it.  Look at my avatar of my modified version.  ;D
