Ice Scratcher's mods, improvements, and inventions..
« on: Nov 04, 2017, 09:41 AM »
Alright guys, since the photo bucket crash, all pictures of my creations are now unavailable...

I'm making this one thread as a compilation of my ideas, starting with the most recent pics that are still on my phone...

First off, my drill cover, made from an antifreeze gallon jug...

Hoping you all find these items helpful..

Thanks for looking...

I didn't like how the throttle trigger did this...

Hit the hardware store for a rubber grommet..

This keeps the throttle trigger from flopping around and falling toward the plate... Takes up all the play too, so its all held just slightly against the drill trigger.. So as soon as you pull, its immediately turning.. Which to me is actually safer than trying to take up play, then getting surprised with a turning blade? Not that I had issues, just like things right...

Anyone else find the same issue annoying?

I disliked that as well Scratcher, I have been using a 4" super light spring to hold mine in place without depressing the trigger. Just makes it a PITA when the lever drops down all the way. I have also been using some fiber washers to help take up some of the extra "slap" in the linkage, It was a fine line at first between too loose and too tight but I have been happy with the last few I have assembled they seem just right. If I could post pics I would... Can't seem to get them to work yet... Another PITA!!!

When making a reply, look for the blue square add image to post, bottom left of the area you type in... Click it and go from there, seems easy enough..

Made from a zip tie, and a piece of plastic tube from a pen... Cut a V in the tip...

Used for taking really small jigs, out of really small fish...

I modified my 6" Mora auger a few seasons ago.  When the ice was 30 inches, I noticed my drill auger was really slowing down once really deep.. I suspected it was the flights rubbing on the upper side of the hole (possibly due to uneven sharpening (labatt)), so I cut half the flights off, just above the middle weld..

It worked great, and as an additional bonus, noticeably lighter weight too..

Pictured left to right.. Stock 8" Mora, modified 6" Mora, and a gas 8" Eskimo.

More about the piece of aluminum later...

Also notice the difference between the size of the gas Eskimo, and the stock Mora 8"... The Mora only has 7" flights, with 8" blades.. Which makes it the lightest 8"you can get.. Also the 7" flights won't rub the sides of an 8" hole (problem with 6" mentioned above)....

Continuing....

I needed/preferred an 8" for Erie eyes.. Did it with a 6", but very touch and go at the hole...

As soon as they offered a gear box I decided it was time for an 8" electric...

Well, I liked my mod to my 6", and was needing an extension (as preferred by most) with the clam plate, and I thought.. I would cut half the flights off, then cut middle STEEL, shaft out, and replace with a longer piece of aluminum tubing, and everything mo betta mo lighter...

Weight before...

After adding extension...

Ready to go...

Scratcher,

Try and find a Jiffy jet hand auger, I think it would be right up your ally.

It has a rubber cover which is great for shaver blades. Then the Blades are curved slightly so it cuts more like a lazer. However, you can sharpen them by hand and with a wheel buffer.

I was given this 8in this summer and sharpend the blades.....jiffy want $34 for the last set of 8in jet blades....told them to eat crow and put a set of standard shaver blades on it. Then used extra hard bolts to pull the blade down onto the head and it turned the standard edition shaver blade into a jet blade.

Been using Down East rod holders on the lip of my flip over, but they just weigh too much....

If I'm actually walking out on Lake Erie, we're talking four miles before its all said and done...

Can't stress how much weight matters..

Decided to make some really simple, adjustable, lightweight rod holders..

Rod holders made from aluminum stock from the hardware store, and lightweight PVC cut from a piece sold for a sink drain..

The slots were made in the lip of the sled by taking another piece of the same aluminum in a pair of vice grips. Heat the aluminum up with a propane torch, using it to melt the slot. The process will make a meleted burr around the slot, easily removed with a sharp knife..  Works great for me..

Other items on the front edge of the tub are an ashtray (always take everything out), mounted same way as the rod holders, lid similar to auger cover posted earlier...

The longer piece in the middle is a piece of PVC ripped in half, it holds my clam plate handle perfect...

The ripping cuts were made using a table saw, the cross cuts made with miter saw... Seemed ultra dangerous and shady so be warned and please keep your fingers!

Also, hard to see, but in the same picture above, under the stock fx 100 bench, is a 5lb propane tank, and a milk crate...

Made a wind bar for my FX 100, made from a spring loaded tent pole. Also prevents the cover from getting burnt on the heater if it should get inadvertently flipped up while it was on... Also allows for moving the shanty without shutdown/cool down...

Some pictures...

My sled design, with much inspiration from our dear Smitty....

The metal rails used on the skis were sourced from a bed frame...

5/8 birch plywood for the risers, 1x6 for the cross pieces..

My design is different from most Smitty sleds by how the weight sets on the skis. Skis are designed and engineered to have the weight load where the bindings are. This also allows the skis to flex more acting like a suspension system. I've seen skis break when mounted too close to the front, it takes away the spring, and creates a sheer point on the front edge of the block.. Never seen one get broken pulling by hand though..

Great idea and thanks for sharing!  That Mora cover is garbage at best and dangerous way too often.

Thanks man, the width for it to work is pretty specific, I'll have to measure what ended up working..
