I know everyone is itching to ask so I will put this out there. Any area of the lake that has capped should gain 2.5” of ice by the end of just Friday alone according to the forecast and my calculations.  There will be walkable ice over deep water on the lake this weekend but since I haven’t scouted it yet, I don’t know where it is capped and where it’s not.

That stinks. Is there much snow on the ice that is there?

Lots of gas holes to be aware of so I always stick to the same areas I’ve always fished.  If I had a machine I would definitely stay on the tracks.

I just checked a local body of water that needs to cap to tell me all of Oneida is safe. It’s still wide open so the wait continues….

I saw some open water on the west end. Any ice out there isn’t safe… it just started to refreeze. North shore still has wet areas that are freezing now. Anybody venturing out… please use EXTREME caution. The last snow will most likely be hiding gas hole areas and newly skimmed over open water from the last warm up. A spud is your best friend. Don’t take any info from anyone and check the ice yourself. Stay on top!!😎

I agree - I live about 30 miles away, and even with the cold the last couple days its been breezy, too so that won't help things ....

LOCALS ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lmao. But really only advice I’d give to you guys who have a far drive is it’s obvious there has been truckloads of people fishing the beach and that would be my back up plan. Oneida is one of them lakes it never has “safe ice”. Friday is looking like a windy one and that is never fun on any body of water. I have driven to other lakes before over an hour away just to find no ice and go to the local dinner and maybe wonder around town and still have fun… it is the name of the game sometimes for ice fisherman

That fear is a godsend. The most important part of Oneida is being fearful of what can happen. Open or ice. I have spent many days driving all over NY hoping to get out only to be turned back. The canal has just skimmed back over at the beach.

I’m fine with it as long as I get 2 or 3 outings on Oneida ice.  Always nice to catch eyes through the ice but not too bad on the boat either for 7 almost months.  Plenty of other options for ice fishing around here for perch and panfish and my freezer is already off to a good start.

I haven’t been on Oneida yet. I work around the lake at times, so I’m able to post what I see. I have seen anglers out of the beach… on the webcam. I don’t know conditions down there to allow me telling anyone it’s safe. The cold temps have helped. How much? I don’t know…
It’s been a crazy season so far….

Very cool pic and loving the black ice off the drop offs.  I’ll give it a couple days and take a field trip Sunday to see it in person

The lake I was on today was making all day ....13 when I got there and 28 when I left ..... the holes were hard to keep open and kept getting smaller and smaller in diameter ....

That doesn't surprise me - I was on a small lake - Oneida is a totally different animal, especially the way its laid out
