Brook Trout, no hike required ;-)
« on: Dec 02, 2020, 07:52 PM »
Needed to get out and find some hardwater & fish. Was nice having to "hike" maybe 100 yds, and be on fish. was 5 degrees when I started @ 7:30, was 40 when I left at 1:00.  Morning saw lots of action, slowed down around 10. Ice a solid 5 inches, and oh, did I mention I only had to walk maybe a hundrend yds? :-) Small jigs, tipped with a mealie. 9ft of water near shore was best. Not much happening out deeper (14.5ft). Darn pretty fish! It's about that time boys, looking forward to hitting the ice with you guys!

Those are some healthy brookies! Definitely haven't found any like that in Michigan. Brother and I used to hit South Mesa Lake on the Grand Mesa (Western Slope), as it was a good early ice location for brookies (about 1:2 ratio brook trout to rainbow), sometimes fishable by Halloween. Similarly, hike was only couple hundred yards from parking area.
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.
