Now we need ice to fish and grill.

If you can't play nice, get off the ice!

Silly me, I thought this thread was about collecting bait.  Like digging grubs out of golden rod or collecting maggots off of roadkill.  Doing something fun like that!!!  Besides, who has time to eat while fishing?

That's what I was thinking as well lol. My 4 year old son and I have been collecting goldenrod grubs the last few weeks. It's a pain and not worth it IMO, but he loves it so I can't really complain!

There it is there!  Anytime you can get outdoors with your son or daughter, its a great day!  And, you are showing them that they don't have to buy everything.  You and he are making memories that the both of you will take to your grave.  Nice job Dad!  I use to do a lot of pheasant hunting.  I would fill my pockets with golden rod bulbs and then sit and cut them open while watching tv at night.  I would actually prefer to use them over waxies, any day.  They are more like spikes, "maggots".  It still cracks me up every time I talk to fishermen that don't know that spikes are actually maggots.  Why buy a cup of a 1000 spikes, for $20, when you can pick em up for free by the millions?  I like getting them in the fall when the weather is starting to get cooler.  Not cold because by then there are no flies, but cooler.  The flies land on dead roadkill deer and lay their eggs. Then the maggots start growing.  When it is cool outside you can actually collect them and the carcass doesn't stink!  Easy money!  That's another thing that cracks me up.  People will stop and pick up a funky germ filled pop can worth $.10, but pass up on a road kill deer, full of $20 bills, lol.  Now that's collecting ice fishing food!!!

Completely agree! We recently moved to the country where we don't have curbside garbage pick up. I wish I was thinking ahead this summer when I would go a week or two without going to the dump, I had enough maggots growing in my garbage can to last me several winters lol.
