Was across the river in Sabula today, skim ice to about an inch thick out there, we stayed on the docks in the harbor, not safe yet.

The perch were larger than past years.
No Jumbos
Mostly 8"-10"
We kept 3 out of 10 caught.

Thanks Mohawk Al, I appreciate the info. I haven't fished much the last couple of years but looking to get back in. I live in Clinton, Iowa so Mickelsons  is a short drive. Guys used to walk up to the north end more than right out in front of the ramp, are there better or more fish up that way? Seems like a pretty good walk for an old fat guy (me).

I was told that at one time there was a deep hole out that way that held some larger perch, but it supposedly has been silted in some and isn't what it used to be. I was thinking of trying out there Monday morning if there is safe ice.

Since you are in Clinton, do you know if Bulgers Hollow is fishable during the Winter? I know you can get a lot of perch there in the Fall, did t know how it was once it ices over.

I was on Bussey lake yesterday. There was 6" of good clear ice. A lot of fish caught but a lot of sorting also. RH

I drove out by Bulgers this morning, ice looked OK but I didn't have time to get out and drill any holes. No one out there, but I did see a few out in the Rock Creek park area outside Camanche. I think it's time!

I was there yesterday and couldn't buy a fish. The exception was the dozen or so bass on shiners (on tip-ups, and they were released because I like to catch them on a little white frog in the summer) I was there 7-12.
There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the ice looking like an idiot.

Has anyone here fished the canal above the dam in Leclaire? See a lot of guys fish it, but don't know the quality of fish.

Its a popular spot. I know good fish get caught from their every year. I would recommend trying it out. My folks live in Bdorf and I have fished there with some success. Good luck

i believe its 5-10'.  catch crappies and gills.  it fills up with shad in the winter, you'll see them on the flasher.   there are brush piles throughout the place.

There are spots over 20' deep there. Bluegills Crappies mostly. Bass some what.

Typical fishing is in 12-15'. The fish hang in the bay on the drop-offs, you are just fishing wide open area. Later in the year they will move up to the brush in 8-10'.

Crappies and bluegill, and a 7" perch every once n a while.

Last year sucked, the shad were in there like I have never seen before. Made the fishing suck except for around the brush. Was absolutely terrible last year compared to previous years.

DO NOT WALK ACROSS IT YET! The army corps pulls water through there in the winter making it have current, the highway side and center do not have nearly as much as the island side. You will have to walk the island out on early and late ice. Don't even risk it, the middle of that place is 20-25' deep and has current, you do NOT want to go in. No fish is worth it.
