Rod Holders, Cradles, Stands, etc.
« on: Jan 29, 2008, 12:08 PM »
I was just wondering what kinds of different rod holders other are using on the ice.

PLEASE POST PICS !!!!

I've used all different kinds and have made custom holders before. I just got some new ones and they are working very well. I'll take and post some pictures next time out.

I made some of these out of a simply wire hanger for use in my fish trap.  They ain't pretty, but they work pretty well.  Since then, I've created a loop at the outer end so it doesn't catch on clothing or on the fish trap canvas.  The other neat thing about them is that they aren't really all that rigid, so they do the job holding the rod, but when I set them down and do something else, every time I move when sitting in my fish trap they impart jigging motion on my lure!  I can also push down on the rod and let go, and it jigs without holding on to the rod for quite a good amount of time.  On the end that attaches to the trap, I folded the wire over into a tight loop and it provides a good solid connection inside the eye bolts that I attached to the fish trap.  I made one for each side.  They are removable, light, and...they work.

This pic was taken right after I made them a few years ago.  They werethouroughly tested by my cat before their first use.

OK, I put my thinking cap on and came up with a new design, cheap and easy to make...and cat tested.  Basically, the ones that I made the other day are similar to the one pictured above (new pics to come) but without the problems.  Here were the problems with the old design:

1)  they hooked onto all types of cloth including the fish trap tent...not good.

2)  after problem 1), they became easily bent out of shape.

3)  sometimes they hooked onto my skin...not good either.

Neither problem was good, so, I tried again.

Improvements:

Instead of using hangers, I bought 10 strand packs of straight hanger wire (about 6' each) from Home Depot so I don't have to do any straightening.  Cost, $2.99 per 10.  Makes about 30 to 40 rod holders depending on how you make them.

Used a 3/4" pvc pipe as my template, with a hole/notch to hold my first bend, then rap around the pipe for uniformity (makes them look professionally done and also the perfect fit for my rods.

Used aquarium plastic tubing over the wire, and sealed the ends with a lighter and linesman pliers to seal in the end that hooked on to everything.  The tubing adds to the rigidity and form of them, and makes them also look very professional.  You can buy this stuff, or similar stuff cheaply at Home Depot as well (I happened to have some laying around).

Basically the same design as my first ones, but easier to make, more protective, and they look a lot better.  I can't wait to try them out and share the pics with you (hopefully tomorrow or tonight).

I have my house and my sled drilled in a few spots so I can use the rod rockers.

As promised, here is my new version (construction info in my previous post):

The rod holder by itself:

The rod holder attached to my Fish Trap (removable, just slip it in and out of the eye screws) and it rotates into position, you can bend the wire up or down to adjust too:

I have one on each side.

That's a good idea Fat Boy. I've used Slamco coiled rod-holders in a somewhat similar fashion in my Frabill Ultralight but I just don't have the width to mount them like that and use 'em effectively. Either the rod, rod-holder, or both are either rubbing against my leg or the side of the shanty.

For light-biting fish, I like to lift straight up with the rod instead of out and up as you have to do with most rod-holders. Great for keeping your rod secure and not going down the hole, but I want that "quick draw".

Basically I have to have a rod-holder, stand, cradle, etc. sitting in front of me. I like to only jig with one rod inside the Ultralight and have most often been setting a Slammer Tip-Up out with my other rod (we're only allowed to use two lines in Michigan).

I've been either resting my rod on a plastic crate or clipping on a Tackle-Tamer (little red plastic) rod-holder if I leave my rod in and walk away to check my Slammer.

Recently, I picked up a couple of Orangeville Hooker Rod-Holders. My buddy has an older model wood one and I had similar home-made stands for my SWish Rods years ago.

Unfortunately, we have "white-out" conditions today, so I don't think it's a good idea to go outside and take some new gear pictures.

Hmmmm, I ideas are flowing in my head for the DIYers.  I'll come up with a couple more designs and post them this weekend.  One problem that I have with the ones that aren't mounted on to a portable shanty is that, although are some that are free standing, when not in use they take up a lot of room unnecessarily.  I think I have an idea that will solve that one too.  More to come.

 That model is always available,
but that gold metal band is a little pricey
and really restricts your ability to fish for most guys.  ;D

I got real lucky finding a partner that insists on fishing / hunting. But God knows ... that band does come with a HUGE price. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, all things considered!
Regardless I'll be putting that rod holder to use this afternoon. Hopefully it won't do me wrong.

No I don't mind at all.  I use mine all the time.  They have held up for about 8 years now.

Good luck.

Here is an example of the ones me and my bro make. They are made of heavy duty steel and then given a rubberized coating so that they dont freeze to fingers. the clips allow the entire unit to be rotated to any angle for a variety of fish houses, and allow an angler to keep several rods rigged with different presentations at hand and ready to go at a moments notice.

Here is the rod holder I Made last year. An elastric strap keep the legs in place and simply pull the legs out and fold it up. The nice part about this rod holder/stand is you can set the hook as you lift it out. Unlike many holders you have to wrestle the rod out of them while the fish gets away. Also as hard as the fish can pull this won't tip over, the legs are just long enough to keep it stable.
