New Spud.. Made in Canada
« on: Dec 13, 2010, 09:22 PM »
I was at a local Canadian tire store today and my buddy who runs the fishing department wanted to show me the cool new spuds he just got in. Recently Canadian tire stopped ordering in Jiffy spuds, so he was looking for somthing new, he found a guy out of Lindsay Ontario who makes a pretty mean looking spud... check this out

As you can see in the pic it is pricey, but cool looking none the less. I have never heard of these before, but thought it was cool that a big chain picked up on some local Ontario handy work. Sorry for the crappie pics, all i had was my iphone the ane lighting is not the best

I was just looking at that today and was wondering if anyone has tried it?  I don't mind paying the $50 if it is good quality, although they are selling the handles separately for an extra $15 that is a bit of a scam.

yeah....$65 for a piece of metal to hit ice with?  I don't think so...but where can i get something cheaper?

I was thinking of making one, but I'm not sure what kind of metal pipe to start with  - any ideas?

If you have a welder, bench grinder, hacksaw, you can do it. Or a friend welder. Also nice to be handy with tools.

Gather up some pipe or solid cold rolled, length = eye level to the ground. A short(6") piece of car spring, sharpened appropriately, weld it on and attach a "Wrist Line" to the top end. Adding a 4" cross piece will get you a better grip and keep the line from sliding off.

If you grind the car spring, DO NOT get it too hot ~ bucket of water for quinceing OFTEN. No brown spots.

Good luck.

Here's a picture of the one I made.

Notice the T handle top & strap. Can save it going for a quick trip to the bottom.
Also the black lines around the bar above the blade are 2" apart to measure ice depth up to one foot.
Use solid steel bar stock. A little heavier to carry but the extra weight helps greatly when spudding a hole.

Living proof that "beer builds better bellies"
