Wow that was enlightening , good info. I really did not think you had that long. I guess his main point is not to panic , thats easy to say in a demonstration , its a diff. story when you are going out on the ice by yourself at 0530 in the morn. I know its not safe to go by yourself, but most of the time I cant get anyone to go that early.Still its the best advice I have heard of in a long time.I dont remember him saying anything about the ice picks though.

Well why would they demonstrate with extra conveniences that not everyone has?

You can get ice picks at Crappy tire or Walmart for like 5 bucks.

I noticed at the beginning of the video he was cross country skiing assuming he did not lose his poles or if the poles were floating in the hole he could have used the poles for picks to get out of the water. What about a whistle, it could be used to draw attention to you.( Remember the girl from the movie Titanic she blew a whistle to get rescued.)

what he says in the video is true. ihave gone thru three times.the first time i didnt know what to do until my brother pulled me out.the second and third time i got to the edge and gained controll of my breathing and pulled myself out with the ice spikes that my old lady made me buy after the first time i went thru.gaining control of your breathing is very important.try and breath thru your nose and out your mouth.it doesnt take as much energy out of you that way.

I've seen the video before. Good info. The piece I got out of it was to not panic and try and get yourself vertical to get out. to try and swim out as it were. Glad some one is getting the nitty gritty science to save a life. If you know your going out on the ice you should have ice picks and a whistle. A local sight had a video of a pick race were the guy with the picks got himself going pretty good on black ice.
