Ice Fishing Musky
« on: Jan 31, 2011, 09:02 PM »
Does anyone here ice fish for musky? If so how do you do it? Tipups, jigging or anyhting else? Theres a lake i love musky fishing in the summer and this year we can get to it in the winter and i would love to catch some out of there. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I usually fish for pike and have encountered a few musky thru the ice, I use large shinners and suckers and dead smelt,on tip-ups of course. I'd start by fishing your goto summer spots and finding weeds and set up there working into shallow water.

Theres one deep hole in the lake and then some little bays which are more like little bumps in the shoreline that is covered with lily pads in the summer. Which would be the better place to set tip ups at?

i would start in the area of the deep hump and find the closest shallow water or weeds to the deepest water and set up around there working from deep in shallow. or if you can find where the weeds end fish right outside that line.

In New York, we have a few lakes with Tigers, every year they turn up through the ice once and a while. Tough to target them specifically.

I use trout for bait muski's love them, also creek chubs work well to.I cut the tail with scissors so they cant swim well,it keeps them from getting away, big shiners if you can get them I have heard of guys using herring to just check the regulations on whats leagal in you area some places don't allow live bait

I specifically target muskies on the ice and do well. I like fishing drop offs, but shallows work well also, some guys do well fishing open water also. The bait fish usually swim in the open water about 15' down and I try to set my baits in that area wether I'm fishing open water or the drop offs. Trout, creek chubs, suckers, and large golden shinners all work well

Wisconsin you  can't target them in winter. Only Native Americans.
