Title: tip ups how far off bottom
Post by: upsavr on Dec 08, 2003, 08:34 PM
how far off the bottom do you rig the tip ups with the bait?
1-3 feet off the bottom is what i usually do, but i am still a rookie
any advice?  rule of thumb depth off bottom?

it depends on what you're fishing for and whether its deep or shallow--generally for walleye 6-12 inches regardless of depth and shallow water usually 2 feet off bottom for northerns (in water 10ft and over generally 5-6 feet off bottom)  perch always on or near bottom    :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Find a good weed line....and have your bait about one or two feet above that.....works for me!!

I am talking pike here, not walleye got a post over on the walleye board

but for pike is there a rule of thumb depth off bottom?
like 1-3 feet off bottom and 1-3 feet off weed or structure?

it makes sense to put your bait one to three feet above whatever your fishing (bottom or structure).  Pikes eyes are on the top of their head so they can easily spot bait above them...tight lines

you could probably even go one to five feet .....depending on the water clarity..just my two cents

Really depends on what you are fishing for. Salmon..right below the ice. Most other fish 12" off bottom.

Our water here is pretty murky. I fish from 5 to 15 feet of water and spread mine at different depths. The eyes on a pike are better suited for looking up than down. I don't put mine any closer than 3' to the bottom when in deeper water and sometimes I go as little as 2 feet under the ice.  During early ice there is still a lot of light getting through the ice and it makes it easy for the pike to see a bait silhouetted up high

I fish pike 12 - 18" off the bottom with a medium shiner on the edge of a drop off.  if you dont see any action try raising 6-12"

I was setting up about a foot off bottom, with less than impressive results. My step brother was setting up about 3 and a half feet off bottom and he was getting bit all day. So i started doing it for pike and for walleye and the bite increased for me, coinsidence? Possibly. But it works for me.

when they come in my spear fishing hole they are about 6 to 12 inches above the weeds and i like 2 to 3 feet off the bottom in no less then 8 feet of water

The way I learned is to put it about 4-6 ft under the ice depending on the fow.

i know muskie up here are caught 10ft. under the ice over deep water as much as 100ft. deep! i got one in 70ft. at that height but we have clear water around here. usually we set up not far from a weedline near a shallow flat area. i know pike are more weed oriented so i would go in closer. try some dif. heights. let the fish tell you where they want the bait.
