What is the correlation you see in the weight of the sled and ice thickness? Is it a concern of safety?

Yeah, I was adding up my total weight of a trip and just thought my sled should not be a major part of weight and then I built it and it was. I have a really nice sled at the expense of weight, oh well. Pics soon. I really like this subject every year and this year I hope my sled will use what I have learned on here.

Last winter I built an ultralight kayak (30lbs) and I learned a lot on that from the construction of it. My current sled is a wooden one I built about 10 years ago, and weighs about 50lbs, and my goal is to have the new one be slightly bigger but weigh only half that.

One of the sharper ideas was seen on Bob's sled - first page - notice the rescue rope and throwing weight attached - either that of its Bob's way of snagging a passing snowmobile for a tow - great thought Bob

Thanks. I always carry the rope on my sled along with extra cloths. Plus safety pics around my neck. I really want to see my kids grow up.

That pic does not show it, but there is a loop at the end of the rope too, so a person can get the rope around their shoulders. The boat fender works to add weight and also makes sure the rope floats.

I've never used it and I hope I never do.

nothing wrong with safety, i carry a 50' length of rope in hopes i never have to use it

Well this is the sled I built. It does everything I want it to. It weighs in around #35 empty and full it pulls like a dream. I used pine boards with an aluminum bottom and aluminum runners. I pull my clam 2000 behind so that is what the eye bolt in the back is for. Pictures explain it all, enjoy.

I HAVE BUILT A COUPLE SLEDS OUT OF PLYWOOD AND ALUMINUM BUT THEY WERE STILL TOO HEAVY FOR MY OLDER BODY. I HAVE SINCE TAKEN A JET SLED JUNIOR AND ADDED A PINE TOY BOX THAT FITS PERFECT AND HAS ENOUGH ROOM ON THE SIDES INSIDE FOR THE TRAPS AND SCOOPERS. LOTS OF ROOM IN THE BOX FOR EVERY THING.IN FRONT OF BOX IN SLED RIDES THE BAIT BUCKET. ON TOP I BUNGIE FOLDING SEAT AND AUGHER. IN BACK OF SLED 2 PIECES OF PCV HOLD THE JIGGING RODS. AT END OF SLED I HAVE AN I BOLT THAT I USE TO ATTACH A PLASTIC KIDS SLED IF I TAKE THE ICE TENT. THIS WHOLE UNIT SLIDES THE BEST SO FAR. A PLASTIC TOY BOX WOULD EVEN BE LIGHTER. IT WORKS FOR ME!.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I try to make all the things I build nice, I was taught to be proud of what you build, and I am very proud of this, that is the only reason I put it on here to be seen by others. I also was inspired by a sled on here so if my does the same for someone else my mission is complete.

Any sled with a nils in it is a great sled. If I fished with more tip ups I would do the milk crate pipe idea, that is a great idea.

4 inch, lightweight (not rigid, schedule 40) drainage pipe. You have to squeeze it a tad bit to fit HT Polars in, it holds them in really well.
