Last year was my first year ice fishing and I live in Hammondsport so keuka lake is just a stone throws away. I got spoiled as it being my first year and was able to fish the state park in branchport for lake trout. They are my favorite fish to eat. So my question is on the penn yan side is it mainly gills and perch or can you get into some trout?
-
Yes you are correct pen yann is mainly bluegill perch crappie pickerel bass I've fished that end of the lake for 10 years and never caught or heard of a laker caught but you never know. Lakers are more likely to be caught in deeper water
-
I saw the biggest pike of my life come out of the Penn Yan side bout 6 years ago. Guy caught it on a 12" sucker minnow. He also caught a 6.5 lb bass on the same thing.
-
i've grown up on keuka for almost 40 yrs. Also went to hammondsport high school for a little bit. done my fair share of fishing on the lake. don't get to used to fishing for lakers through the ice in branchport. doesn't happen every year. only a few times a decade from my experience. hope it happens again this year. sometimes if it freezes from penn yan down to the Switz. you can get lake trout on that side of the lake if it freezes that far. PY north end is better for pickerel, bass, perch, gills, seeds, and an occasional pike

i'll be 39 in 2 weeks Mike. been fishing ever since i could hold a pole. i still learn alot from YOU every time we are out
-
thanks everybody. good info
-
Not a single report yet on IS anyone has been fishing yet on keuka. Bet guys are out at the north end. Can anyone confirm this? I know branchport side is iceless (if that's a word, lol) as of 1/14
-
I am going to take a ride over to Penn yan tomorrow late afternoon to get bait to fish waneta on Saturday and I will ask. It will be dark so I wont to be able to see the ice.
-
I plan on cutting a couple holes in front of the water treatment plant today and seeing how thick it is. The fresh ice is only 3 days old so at best it might be 2-3inches.
I'll post tonight the results.
-
I fished it today. The new ice is 3-4 thick

Great day on Keuka ice is solid 4" clear caught a nice variety of fish got some great videos from the pancam caught my first crappie I nice one at that and even managed to pull a bullhead out of the ice saw schools of 100s of bluegill on camera but they were not interested in biting yet
-
My granddaughter goes to Keuka College. She wants to go ice fishing. Where can we access the lake for perch? Not looking for any secret honey holes, just some legal place to park and not have to drag a mile. Thanks pp

plus that canal has water that moves through it. definitely dont want to do that walk. glad you found indian pines. pretty easy to locate on google earth or bing maps. good luck

Fished north end by pines park yesterday. Was only there from 11:00-1:00 and got a few gills and one crappie. First time ice fishing where I can see bottom that clearly! You guys got a great winter diversion!
-
I think the name of the road is old pines trail rd. There is a small park there next to outlet. Does anyone no how much ice is in that area. Would like to try there next week. A good drive for me. Visited that area in the spring and really like the area. Is there any places to lodge in Penn Yan?
-
I had 4" clean ice on Friday. There is a best western right in town($97 a night)
Easy walk to good spots from parking lot.

Was out fishing Pennyan end of Keuka on Sunday. Ice is about 5-6 inches thick. Went out early afternoon started in shallow water and moved out. Caught about 7 perch but they were dinks.
-
Can anyone report on how far down the Penn Yan branch the ice is safe? Or where there is access near laker water depths? Really want to take my son out on Sunday and the access I have is a ways down the lake.
Thanks in advance!!
-
Anyone going out saturday in search of perch from Penn Yann? Two of us going to give it a shot for the first time!

A friend of mine who lives on the lake says its still open water in laker territory. I'd pick a different body of water.
-
can you launch a boat at the state park?
-
can you launch a boat at the state park?
From what I seen the other day yes it would be possible but you might and to bring some rock salt lol I am sure the docks and banks are a sheet of ice
-
thanks, maybe I will get the boat out this weekend for a little Laker action!!
-
What works for perch . Never been there, guess bait shop would know.
-
I was at brachport yesterday and still open water. BUT today I just came home thru Hammondsport and the whole lake was iced over from about 100 feet out from the head of the lake to the bluff (couldn't see past the bluff) so maybe just maybe with the cold weather coming we may get a couple of weeks fishing for them tasty lakers!!!!

Tasty? You must have the pallate of a raccoon.
-
Lakers on the bar-b-cue.... marinated in Italian salad dressing... lightly char-grilled, with onions and garlic? Hell yeah
-
Lakers are for folks who like to eat fish. Perch are for those with a blander palate. You know, like coors light and white bread. ;) haha
Unfortunately, the lake seems to have frozen just in time to get 10-12 inches of snow on it. Hopefully that doesn't stop the ice growth.
-
Tasty? You must have the pallate of a raccoon.
Take the small Keuka Lake lakers, filet them, soak the fliets in a 50/50 mix of apple juice/kosher salt brine solution for about 3 hours in cold garage or fridge. Pull out filets, allow excess to run off for few seconds and then place on grill grates and allow to partially dry for about 20 minutes. Sprinkle with some fresh coarse cracked pepper. Put filets into a smoker with apple and hickory chips and smoke for about an hour. Delicious.
Rocky the Racoon never had it so good!

anybody willing to give a ice thickness report for penn yann side.looking to hit 100 plus fow.out of college area.not looking for fish reports just ice conditions.
-
8" of good ice; drifting snow on top of it. Water gushes from holes when you drill them so if you're using shorter rod you might make sure to wear good water-proof footwear. Lakers are hitting well. I use 4 1/2 foot rod so can sit back from the water that will surround hole. Good luck.
-
Get ready for a longggggggg walk ! And lol there goes that spot
-
Anyone have an ice report around hewitt point (pen yan side) ? It sounds like the ice is good in front of the college but has anyone been further south? I am thinking of fishing deep water in that area.
-
hey guys, i've never fished Keuka before and im going there saturday. i have tip-ups and i jig so i dont care what i target just want to catch something. were can i park? i don't have a machine so not looking to walk too far.
-
if you are going to penn yan go to a place called seneca farms (take west lake road and take a left if coming form Penn Yan on to Ritchey boulevard) and go down behind there there is boat launch, if you get there you can go for a 100 to 200 yard walk to the pump house it is a big brick building off the the right anywhere out in front of there is good water.
-
Is anyone catching crappies in Keuka Lake? I'd like to go after a few.
-
can you park at the pump house? what about out in front of the boat launch at the state park?
-
Not sure where big country is sending you ???
Go to Indian Pines Park and follow the herd. Google it. The drag is pretty brutal right now, but there should be a pretty good trail out by now. Keep in mind that the temps this weekend are going to be single digits. I'll be at the bench tying flies :-\
Rg
-
Single digit temps.... fingers crossed Branchport fork starts making ice.....
-
That would be SWEEEEET!
This could be the year looking at the near forecast.
Rg
-
Just wondering what the big deal about the branch port side is something special over there?
-
Just wondering what the big deal about the branch port side is something special over there?
When branchport freezes it opens up another public access point at the state park. This access point allows for a short walk to deep water unlike the penn yan side. Branchport doesnt freeze very often.
-
Thanks RG, cold doesn't bother me so ill check that spot out!
-
It blows my mind what it takes to freeze the branchport side. The forecast looks promising.
-
Yep, it is amazing. Probably because the depth there drops off like a rock. I fished an area south of there last year where 50 yds from shore put me in 140'. The other day, I saw a lot of guys fishing off Keuka College. Is there any parking in that area?
-

i was trying to get to that but just couldn't put it on the screen sorry for any confusion.

Being new to ice fishing and seeing the Hammondsport side iced over my question is has anybody ever fished that? Last year as cold as it was that was the only open water. Just curious and wondering if it ever gets thick enough ice to be out on.
-
Never fished the lake before and was wondering where people go out from to get lakers? Like can you go out from the college or do you got to go out from the north end? If its only the north end does any one bring sleds and wheelers out there? Thanks
-

definitely not a spot that gets ice fished. drops off way to quick there. however, there are some shallow weedy spots . how long has it been frozen down there? is there alot of snow on the ice?
-

not too many public launch areas on this lake. your wheeler will get stuck. snow is probably too deep. only place you will be able to get a machine out is probably from north end of PY. laker territory is pretty far from there.
-
So sounds like if I was going to fish for lakers pack light and plain on a long walk until branchport freezes
-

unless you know someone that lives south of the college. i think most of the guys getting lakers right now know land owners they can park at. branchport is not ice fishable yet.
-
Ok thank you for the info
-

There has been ice for about 3 weeks then we got all of the snow and it broke it up a lot but the head of the lake has stayed mostly froze so the shallow spots maybe good if you know where to go. But I drove from Hammondsport to the bluff today and all but maybe a spot 1/2 a mile by 1/2 mile is skimmed over. Not very much snow on the ice towards Hammondsport.
-
Has anyone got into Lakers in < 100 fow?
-
I have seen huts set up on the ice at the head of the lake in Hammondsport this week. must be some decent ice.
-
Has anyone got into Lakers in < 100 fow?
Yes, had good luck in 95 ft of water on pen yan branch
-
How much snow did you guys get this week around Pen Yann. I still have a bone to pick with the perch in that lake. I want to bring the wheeler and I know ya can (or could) get almost as far as the pump house (18 fow) before running into the slush. Just wondering how far the lake effect made it south. Be nice to make it out the 30 or so fow.
-
I was out around hewitt point today. No slush at all there. Everything is frozen solid. The middle of the lake only had 3 inches of snow, give or take. The east side of the lake near shore had some deeper drifts from the wind.
-
Easy spot to access lakers? I am hiking it so any heads up on the easiest walk would be appreciated. Also, favorite rig/bait for trout? Thanks!
-

Best public access is the State park in Branchport. As for jigs, anything white in the 3/8 - 3/4 oz range. Swedish pimple, tube baits, Curley tails, etc. good luck
-
Fished out of the state park this morning with a couple of friends. Had 6" of black ice a mile SW of the launch. By the time we came in most of the snow had blown off.
We caught about 35 lakers between 3 of us with many in the 6lb range. It was a great morning. The wind was brutal.
-
Cheers to the scumbag who left all the lake trout on the ice at branch port ... Not .... Reall ass. Release them or take them home and eat them. Really pissed me off seen hundred of birds and before I went over there I knew exactly what was going on and when I seen the fish laying there i felt like raging... If I see you doing this I will call DEC and make you suffer your crime. I don't mind garbage here and there it happens but seeing fish laying on the ice because you are a POS pisses me off. Sorry for the profanity just can't stand that!
-
We fished today out of the Branchport state park boat launch. Did ok on lakers with 13 between 4 of us. My buddy dropped his camera either on the walk off or in the parking lot. If anyone finds it please PM me. Had lots of personal pics he'd like to get back.
-
Hey JAYY , how thick is the ice , any machines near Hewitt pnt

I was out last thursday and friday. Some of the worst weather of the year lol. There was noone else out besides my group. We walked from a nearby cottage.
The ice was 11 inches with at least 6-7 of it being good black ice.
-
Its a very short walk 2 hundred yards if that and the ice doesn't have much snow either
-

Thanks! Got a PM from a guy that may have it, forwarded him the contact info, hard to think it's not his.

Anyone do very good on the Lakers yesterday seemed like they were looking but hard to get them to bite! Managed a few but just wanted to see if it was me or the bite as the day progressed turned tough.

i went saturday, but further south to avoid the crowds. landed 9, lost about the same with poor hook sets. had a bunch of lookers though. i say less than 50% of them were takers. alot of them hit while cranking the lure up.
-
talked and watch a guy pull up fish all day like they where in a barrel under his hole, he was at 165 and i dident even mark everything for three ours. packed up and went home. ???

Question for the membership. My ICE55 and another guy's ICE35 fishing near me on Saturday were virtually useless below about 110 feet using tube jigs, etc, even when maxed out on gain. The Vex users mostly were able to see theirs. I didn't see anyone with a Marcum. I went back Sunday with an old Piranha 170 sonar and could see everything with no problem. Are the Birds depth limited, or what? In Canadice lake, at 90ft, I had no problems. ???

My buddy had his Hummingbird out there last weekend and it has a tough time marking much over 110' like you said. You would just see little blips here and there. It didn't affect his catch rate though. ;D
-
Have a ice 55 had the the same problem played with the noise and it helped some. As for the depth they both go to 200ft.
-

how deep were you? i had to crank up the sensitivity on my lowrance x67c in order to see the fish and my lure. plus i used the split screen option with it zoomed in 4x. i would fish 140 ft and deeper.
-
Fished there with my marcum lx3 yesterday which maxes out at 160 ft
It marks as far as it's rated on about a 6 gain setting same as owasco fishing lakers however it doesn't like all the interference from the flashers when guys set up 20yds from you in 160+ Foot of water. We actually moved because of it. All in all it was a great first trip there though and one I'll be sure to do at least once a year
-
Been fishing keuka all season for lake trout college and branch port now since there's been ice but man let me tell you what I can personally see what the pressure from people has done! Bits were far and few in between marking fish was even pretty off marked 2 suspended landed both of them and the rest I marked off the bottom and they were not chasing crap! Packed up walked to the other side and it was like a totally different world marking fish catching fish making what I thought was gunna be a crap day a pretty decent one. Usually everytime I have chased lakers this year I pull up at least 10 personal best day was 17. But man the pressure of 300 people a weekend is killing there drive !
-
Seems to be a lot of guys unhappy with people fishing the lake. Doesn't surprise me always heard finger lakes folks were famous for their whine.
-
ice fishing success isn't always consistent to begin with. could be a feeding frenzy one week. and the next week be dead. or one day from the next can be totally different. even hours. 300 people will have a partial impact as well. alot of factors to consider though. but ya, crazy how the internet blows up a spot. i've been on that lake for 30 years. never seen that before.
-
Seems to be a lot of guys unhappy with people fishing the lake. Doesn't surprise me always heard finger lakes folks were famous for their whine.
LMAO Good one Kev. It was amazing to see that many people in one area, much like Mayville.
My Marcum had trouble with the depth past 160 also but the interference from the other flashers really made it tuff, still got-er done though.
-

I remember the beginning of last year before everyone blew it up on ice shanty I was there on the first couple weekends with only a handful of people. I went to fish it once this year and drove away because the amount of people there disgusted me, most of us "fingerlakes" guys are unhappy because we like our solitude (that's why we live here and commute 50-60 miles to work everyday)
-
You would think the local boys would know how to get away from the crowds. I fished lakers all day Saturday. My buddy and I were all alone. Wasn't a person within a half mile. Public access too. I live hour and a half away and had absolutely no problems getting away from the crowds.
-

I forgot people posting behind computers were known as tough guys... Lol if you didn't realize I wasn't complaining... I simply moved and hit gold. But hey your cool ;)
-
I was out Saturday off the state park near shanty town in 170 FOW...Defiantly lots of interference from everyone out there.
I brought both the HB PiranhaMax 176i and 597CI out with me. Initially set up the 597, but was having issues seeing things with either setting (200/83 kHz), so I switched over the the PiranhaMax.
I had good luck running it at 455 kHz- according the the manual it's 16° @ -10db. Every so often, would get a bit of interference, but never enough to prevent me from seeing a 1 oz jig on the bottom.
I know the 597 works at the depth (and location) without issue, as I'm out there in a kayak during open water and never have issues.
I was amazed at the number of shanties out there Saturday, I can only image what the warmer temps on Sunday did to teh crowd.
-

Glad t to see some comments regarding the bird 55, i also had alot of trouble w/ depth there on sunday. i was w/ big country we set up on 170 to start and had no problem marking the bottom but could not see the jig on the screen. One thing i did not try was to click the depth nob to 10x not sure if that would have made a difference, so use to just turning it onto the auto setting. never had the flasher in such a crowd before either, did not realize all the false marks were interference till we went back to other fork of lake lookin for perch. When i say lookin i mean lookin not findin, from 12:30 till 4:30 we poked 12 holes from 15 feet out to 60 feet near structure, some lookers no takers.
Any of you guys on here fishing Hewitt pnt, saw a crew there all wknd. wondering how you did , also wondering how the 2 guys in middle out front of viking did ?
-
I have been playing with the bird 55 for two seasons now on Keuka. The best I have been able to pick up the jig is about 140' No problem marking bottom though. The only thing that helps is to adjust the noise level anywhere from a 3-5 setting. Thankfully, the lakers don't seem to care if I see them or not.
-
VIKING !!! ;D why say anything there will be trash and 300 people there .look for yourself ice is safe now. let me guess u will remove this too..

had the same couldn't see jack, was maxed out on 10X and max gain with my beam set to narrow

fishmaster wait till the trash kills the access and he cant walk out his door to the ice ;D ;D
-
Just wait a few weeks and it will all be over for another decade.
-
This is some serious stuff for some seriously small lakers! Good thing I prefer panfish on the table!
-
Just a lot of people trying something they don't get to do very often or never have before. Unfortunately there's a percentage of miscreants in every group.

-
Fished off the State Park this morning; everybody was behaving!!! I did not see any trash or dumped Lakers. Bite was slow, small schools every 20 minutes or so; hit mostly on white tubes.

What happened to everybody having fun and catching dinner. There are no record fish in this lake so its a lake with plenty of good eating lakers. It is a great time to get in hard deep water catch your limit and enjoy. That was what this whole post was about and everybody is proving to me that if you enjoy something than don't say anything because somebody in this day and age cant fathom somebody else having fun. I have a good friend that got me into ice fishing so this year I was happy as hell to drag him out on the lake to fish for lakers. I literally dragged him out on his sled because he broke his leg. Isn't that what this is all about its the middle to the end of winter and everybody is stir crazy to get on some hard water and catch dinner???

Yes it is glad some one else agrees none of my posts to this topic have been negative, besides the lake trout being on the ice a while back. I feel like most of these conversations end up like Facebook. Every one has to chime in on something they didn't exactly read and be negative. Prolly be staying away from this site from now on. Seems like a lot of drama no body's in it for the fun anymore I guess.
-
Yesterday was my first time icefishing keuka, went out of state park. Was there for three hours and watched people catch fish as for me I got zip but it was great just sitting out there enjoying the time. Two hour drive just to get there and two hour crappie ride home. When your used to fishing 10 to 40' of water,180' feels like it take for ever to hit bottom. Great time.
-
Keviny; I was on the lake Sunday morning and saw you pulling your buddy out. I thought to myself, there's a spiecial friendship or someone lost a bet. I hope you guys had a good day! I believe some good karma is coming your way.

Just would like everyone to know to be careful out at branch port had a buddy tell me today he went out towards the opposite side of the launch and hit some sort of "soft spot" wile he was alone and fell in lucky he is okay and got out just wanted to let everyone know to be careful!!!
-

Glad to see you're back out there!

Addicting isn't it!
The key is to take it away...and I don't think there is a way to reel too fast, they always catch up.

they were kind of moody, marked probably 30 fish an hour, could only get them too chase 40-50 feet, then they would stop, think I picked a bad bite day.. making some adjustments and tieing jigs for round 2.

You only need three lures whit, whit, and white ;)
-
So laker ice vetrans, after one trip, am I thinking along the right lines?... 1 oz trolling sinker flie?

heard that from everyone, first thing I dropped was a white tube 1 oz sinker with stinger, not a follow, then spoons, follows but never more than 20-30 feet, landed on 2 winners but even with a white bucktail that caught a lot my fish, never had a laker follow more than 50 feet, it was hard work too get them too commit, I'm sure theres days guys pile them deep, but that bites 4 weeks old, I was late with my back out, think I hit a bad bite day, if I suck this week, then I'll know its just me not understanding the place, fun none the less, I'm excited.......
-
#5 pearl shad rap has been working best for me have been puting 20 to 30 lakers on the ice a trip. I know they sink slower than other stuff butt I like them.
-
I did really good with a live target lipless, they hammered it.. making rigs now, I like jigs..

All these Laker experts from Keuka should take a shot at Canadice .....................t hey won't be putting 20 to 30 a day on the ice over there !!
Keuka is a cookie cutter Laker factory !!
If you think the bite is off at Keuka just move away from the crowds ........... 300 guys a day on the weekend will even educate a Laker !!
-
I understand its late in the bite, nothing I could do about that, might hit canadagua next week after couple more times here.

Those jigs look good. The lakers have been pukin up 3" sawbellies.

Funs not gunna last for too much longer with days like today, what a day. They'll hit anything bright/white, I dropped down a Schalge house key with a treble tied on.
-
And pray the line doesn't snap. Lol
-
looks like a great day mcarey97. Well I got white flukes, paddle tail flukes, white tubes, lipless cranks, 3 different kinds, jigs, sonars... flies.. not many spoons though, getting the bases covered..
-
fished lakers for the first time today with filet&release and snagger........was nice to finally meet you guys face to face.....had a good time........very finicky bite......I did land 5 small lakers though......16" - 18".....missed a few short hits also....marked a ton of fish, was just tough to make them commit......heard from most people how aggressive these fish are, unfortunately not so much today.....talked to a few guys who said it was slow for them also.....left around 1:30 or so.....the boys stayed for the afternoon bite, hopefully it happened for them.......was a learning experience for sure

I believe fishing was slower all around today. Pan fishing was even slow! After this front passes i'm betting it will be hot. Tomorrow should be good. Any one hit them good today?
-
Thinking after the temps and rain today, tonight and tomorrow the ice will be inaccessible from the launch. I would love to make it out this weekend but, I'm afraid it will not make it.
-
Snag, those seem real nice but there might be easier ways to do this. Don't go overboard, keep it simple. I recently measured a 14lb fish that the guy caught on a cleo. He goes out almost everyday, no electronics, a plastic box with cleos and williams wobblers and a 6 1/2' ugly stick. Just bounces it up and down. One of the locals down there.
-

The bite isn't "late", you just need to move away from the areas that have been fished hard for the last few weeks. They are there and the ones that get hooked up and come off or get caught and released are getting educated a bit in the "shanty town" area. Hopefully a newbie was able to tie into this 29" long one that smashed a tube jig and I released a few weeks back, I figure she was in the 7 to 8 lb. range. It was my best on Keuka so far.

The trout were running much bigger this year than last. Last year, I would say the avg. that I was getting into were around 19" to 20", this year avg 24". Perhaps with people taking a bunch out last season opened up more food opportunities for those hungry lakers that remained and kicked in a growth spurt. BTW - most of the lakers that I kept this year for eating, gifting and smoking had one to three sawbellies (some of which were Lake Ontario size ~ 7" long!) retained in their stomachs compared to just about none last year. I am marking more schools of baitfish (likely sawbellies) on my Lowrance this year than last year too.
With this weather and bad step on my right ankle on the ice Sunday, I am done with the hardwater this year. Who knows if we will get ice back next year at Branchport and make it a "trifecta".
To those still fishing, please be careful getting on the ice at the Branchport launch as the ice gets sketchy fast by the docks and at the spillway just to the left and just outside the end of the docks. That spillway brings down a bunch of snow meltwater that erodes the ice fast.
-
Fished yesterday, me and my grandson had a great time he got his first laker,25". Fish were there but I'll be damn if I can keep them on. Smoker will be fired up today with what we did get.May try one more time.
-
Fished a few times on the weekends and have had success right out by the Branchport boat launch.
-
Well third try at laker fishin was a charm, 2 days of walking and drilling and trying too understand these fish finally paid off, there all done now, I got there number, figured out there moods, baits, locations and how they like it jigged, I fought 36 today, put 21 on the top side, Fred put the hammer down as well
.....what a fantastic day weatherwise and fishwise.. measured a dozen fish over 24 inches, a bunch in the 26-28 inch range.doesn't get much better. this place is absolute heaven.
took this 15 second exposure shot off my lunch pail without a remote.

dam, nice ones there

Kool stuff, glad to see you Oneida boys having fun. I read a couple of pages back, it sounds like the technique could be called "vertical trolling". ;D
-
Nice pics. Glad you guys figured them out. ;D
Vertical trolling is exactly right Dug.
Step 1 - drop it down
Step 2 - reel it up
Step 3 - repeat steps 1 and 2

How is the shore ice holding up at the launch ?
-
good yesterday, spudded it, wet but solid. hard out deeper. measured ice 13 inches in center 11-12 near shore.
-
I'm terrified of drowning...But i want to try kueka in the am...
Was the ice still good today, and do we think it will be good in the morning? If not ill go elsewhere

You'll be as safe there as anywhere .. Plenty of solid ice still. We were there today. Fish were active.

How was the shore ice at the state park today (Saturday) . any issues. Thought about driving down in the morning but don't want to make the journey if I can't get on. How many guys out there today

I did not fish but passed by and saw 15 to 20 huts out there at 1pm
-
Thanks for the reply. Saw them on the cam too. Over 100 views of my post and still no reports. Oh well.
-
In case you missed it on the C&R thread.
Came off the ice at 2 PM. Open water around the docks, but still enough ice to get out.
8 inches of ice over 170 FOW top inch was melted/ refrozen, and the reset was starting to honeycomb.
Looking at the forecast, doesn't look we're gonna see night below 32 until Wednesday... be safe if you head out.
-
I measured 11 inches of ice 4-5 of it honey combed and speared, that leaves 6-7 good under it, put my spud threw in one wack in a few heavily fished areas, I think some spots will rot before the marina, not saying theres not a lot of ice, but its slowly loosing its integrity. just be careful if your new too ice fishin when walking near areas with lots of holes if its a warm day, ice is soaking up water...
-
Another great day of Laker fishin yesterday, showed up a tad late and missed the morning bite, but had steady action all day. I put 17 lakers topside , fought 26 total, I was happy for how dreary it was outside. top 5-6 inches of ice honey combed and speared,Looks like this cold weather might of saved it, could of went south tomorrow.

Nice job guys! Not sure I have ever seen Fred smile in a pic. ;D
That ice looks soft on top...
-
Nice job guys!! Great pic with Fred smiling like Bruce said! Good stuff
-
SNAGGER how do you like the directors chair? How does it make your back feel? Nice fish and pictures! :)
-
I was in extreme pain my first few trips there in the otter chair, its comfortable as hell, but just too low, the height on this chair saved me, hard too fish in pain, that's why I had a hard time with this lake on my first trips. This chair is nice and tall and stiff, feels good. Now I can jig properly.
-
I'm thinking about getting one, I hope your back gets well. Thanks Snagg! :)
-
It looks like everyone's smiling! ;D...
I don't see any snow on the ice or even up on the ridges. All I see on the ice is Lakers!
I see your 1 oz. lure works well SNAGGER. Good job, what do you call that thing?
The Keuka Killer? :o It's always kool when your own lures work!
-
yeah fun trying too invent things for fishin, especially fishin your new too... my bucktails worked good too.. I'm sure theres some locals using plastics throttling them laughing at me, but my swim baits kept getting bit off, re tieing stinger rigs got old, waiting for lighter jigs too drop hurt my back, so settled in on this lure and 2 others, less hassle, more fishin.
felt good too fish finger lakes, brought up old memories of my childhood there.
oh I call that jig "Laker Death"... ;D
-
heres what it looks like in the water..

Laker Death, good name. More like "laker life or death" from the numbers you get. :o ;D
I like the colors in that picture, the natural blues, aqua and green and white plus the color of the water and ice, very kool.
A speed lure with a big profile w/added buckeye. Looks like a winner, they must hammer it.
I really enjoy catching a fish on a bucktail jig I tied especially one using real whitetail hair from a buck I killed.
Making it a true bucktail. Don't mind me posting all this crapola, I'm still stir crazy from winter. Lmao

yo homie! I see your Rollin with a Vexilar now!! What model did you get and how you like it?
-
Fl28 haven't used a vex in 10 yrs, seems alright, it gets screwed up a little after you bring transducer out hole then throw it back in, have too turn it off too reset it everytime I land a fish, but not a big deal...
-
Nice! I'm upgrading next year I think
-
I would save some jing and go with whatever model has split zoom and reads too 200 fow, think 18 or 20.
-
Yeah I hear you there.
-
Great job on those lakers. Got to love it.
-
I never caught a laker threw the ice ...looks like you all had fun ^5

Nice job Stormy!
It is a beautiful for sure Shane.

Those are some great photos , we need to get one from the main road up on the hill looking down from the end of the lake. The one day I left there I looked down at a couple hundred people and huts scattered all over in the sun - Wow what a picture that would have made! Good stuff.

i have one on my phone but you have to really zoom in to see all the huts. not really worth posting
-
we all have enjoyed this winter being able to fish the Branchport side of the lake. its a special place. makes me want to pursue lakers thru the ice more often. the only place I have enjoyed fishing lakers more is the Niagara Bar in May when they are running 20# avg. great pictures everyone.
-
That's def something I want to try meat man heard it can get crazy out there though
-
Glad a lot of new Keuka fishermen got to experience this fishery. One of the little helpful hints I use is to buy some assist hooks and put them on your jig hook when useing those big plastics. I make mine with 10 lb fluoro and a small treble and use crimps. Helps a lot with all those short hits. They sometimes will work themselves off the main hook while fumbling around in the shanty releasing fish, but they are cheap and easy to make so I don't care.
Looks like a nice little cold snap coming up that might extend the fishing there.
Good Luck

I had 33 here last night at 11pm, it was 36 in buffalo branchport and Dresden were like 45 and 48 at night, little sliver of warm air over them, I bet a good 6-7 inches honey combed up good, we can walk on bad ice as long as its cold too hold it together.... done it a lot on Oneida in past yrs.... just wondering how the shoreline held up, looks like some hills too slide down if launch goes south.
-
I'm heading down Thursday snag let the cold stiffen it up
-
We got on last year just a few feet south of the docks once the launch went to open water. Had to climb down a bit but it got us out there safely.
-
Looking at a few weather reports for Penn Yan and Rochester ; It looks like below freezing temps until Fri. 2 pm.
That would be great if we could get another day out of Branchport.
I'd like to hear a report on the ice conditions but I will be checking on it myself by Thursday any way.
Wiz
-
Yes if anybody has a report on the ice please post it up. It's almost a 2 hour drive for me so I'd like to have some sort of an idea before I make the trek.
-
I don't have a report on ice since Monday but monday ice was holding great. Sun didn't eat too up too bad for how warm it was. Girl friend whooped me landing five keepers to my one. She's hooked had a lot of fun. Lots of fished hooked few landed

Well ran over too Keuka Lake one more time, the place is like a drug, just can't seem too get enough of it.. Had too climb down the bank as launch is open water.Yesterday was sunny, no wind, temps near 30, it was beautiful out, got a chance too fish with sun on my face for first time this winter... the action was spotty but when you found them it was crazy good, me and my friend fred fought well over 100 and put over 60 on the ice, awesome day. Almost April and still fishing a frozen Finger Lake, you know its been a hard set of winters too be able too do that.

Nice fish guy's, was there also.did'nt want to wreck your view down the lake :).Was a great day to be on the ice and the fish were spoty but had many hookups and drops. Met guy name Tom, got my 5 and called it a day. Ice was definetly singing, there was a constant rumble in the air whole time I was there. There's alway next year! Be safe.
-
wow you guys really hammer em out there, was out today for the afternoon, and caught 1/20th of the fish you caught still accessible just north and just south of the launch. (but going fast, bring a plank maybe) ice was still strong in the middle.
-
Nice job Shane and Freddie!
-

-
Thanks viper, May try monday.
-

You must be the one who gave me the jig and twister tail, and suggested I go to your spot...
I ended up crossing over... Started marking bait and fish immediately..I put two on the ice and lost a couple more, and then took off. The noise from the ice was creeping me out.. Oh, 3 new guys came over by me, said you sent them over as well. I saw them catch at least one fish before I left.
I just wanted to say thanks... I was losing fish on the side i was on, but i was mostly fishing where i was, due to being to pansy to want to walk way out there..
OH, i did lose 2 big fish... Much different fight than the others... I put on a poor boys, plastic goby and 3/4oz jig head and dropped it to the bottom. First jig up, and something big slammed it..Had it on for a short time and the hook popped... I had some good hits on the goby, enough so, that I wouldn't not bring them.... I just wish i got the hookset part down sooner...
-
vipe14894 can we still access the lake at the state park? I called the other day and the fella on the phone at the state park said they didn't want people going out from there. Any suggestions where to get on without causing a problem. Thanks for any help.
-
Climb over the guard rail, rather than walk out the launch
-
I never got out there this year on the ice, but I jig for lakers during the open water season. One recommendation I would suggest to maybe some of you guys to help increase good hook sets and decrease some misses, would be to use a decent bait casting reel and braid. The baitcaster keep you in constant contact with your lure on the drop, no slack. you would be surprised on certain days how many hit on the fall.....when they do you, you can just set the hook ...no slack. Much better control. With a spinning reel you have to close the bail , then reel some slack, then hit the fish....by that time sometimes that have dropped it. Once you fish a baitcaster you wont go back to a spinning reel for this method of fishing.
The braided line will also help. It is a no stretch line so that when your setting the hook in 100ft. of water, you are getting about as solid a hookset as it they were in 10' of water. With mono, there is considerable stretch over the course of 100' of line and less penetration on the hookset. The braid also has no memory, so once again you are eliminating any potential slack on your drop/free fall. I run a small barrel swivel at the end of my braid to a 4' or so length of fluorocarbon leader, then the jig/lure to the flouro. I must admit though, I can see how the braid might be a pain if the line is freezing up, but I see most of you guys are fishing out of heated pop-ups so that shouldn't be an issue.
Just some methods that have helped me the last few years of chasing these critters.
-
X2, braid is must.
-
My last trip there I gave plastics a fair shake as its the locals favorite, yep it slightly out fished my trolling fly set up, seems fish hold on longer too the rubbery plastic, I rig my tube slightly different then most, plus tied some flashy tinel on trailer hook... Fun learning a new sport, very refreshing and addictive. Well over 60 fought on this same venom tube, there pretty tough tubes. Always liked them for bass.

-
Ice grew an inch since my last trip, 7-10 inches rock hard, last trip 7 wacks with spud to go threw, today 11 wacks. fishin was silly.. I'll post a report tomorrow. Small healed pressure crack in the center.
-
Please stop posting these updates.....
Hearing that the ice conditions are holding up is killing me.
I want one more hard water trip for Keuka Lakers this year, but issues and responsibilities at work are preventing me from getting out there. Looks like Friday / Saturday is the earliest I can break free.
Not sure if the rain and 50 degree forecast are going to work in my favor.
:'( :'( :'( :'(
-
Walked out again from the state park. Only a few others out this morning. Shore ice had firmed up and there is still a plank in place if needed. Steady bite and ice was a solid 8 inches. Wind started howling and the ice got really noisy as well. Probably my last time out this year. Time to hit the streams.

Well yesterday was one of those days you only have a few times in your life, after a long hard winter, today started reasonably cold for march 24th standards, zero when I left my house, walked out on a rock hard singing frozen finger lake and sat down too a steaming fresh cut hole and watched the sunrise over the hills.....and then preceded too just absolutely crush the forkies for 7 straight hours, lost count of how many I fought or bit my line, maybe 100 and set a new personal best by landing 48, too say today was just an all out blast is an understatement, no wind, bright sunny skies, good company, just one those days you live for. I'll never forget it.
I know theres some locals upset us out of towners found out about this special place, but its leaked out and you can't un do it, it rarely freezes and dec raised limits too 5 too thin the lakers out, I think the guys this winter did just that, I might be over one more time next week, if not enjoy your beautiful lake, growing up on Cayuga myself, I forgot how beautiful it is in the great finger lakes region, fished naples a few times as a kid, but this was my first time ever on the broad lake, I'm glad I got too experience it a few times.

I have fished the lake the last few years, once from the boat, and the last 2 winters on the ice. The average laker size is going up for sure. The thinning out appears to be helping so far...
-
wow.....looks like a blast for sure.......should have taken a road trip I guess

oh I have a feeling we'll be jigging up a few trout together next winter. I bet you guys have some time left still on Keuka ;) (http://i.imgur.com/bIXGgjc.jpg)

GREAT JOB SNAGGER!! I have lived in the finger lakes my whole life and I never get sick of how beautiful it is around here. You said you fished Naples when you were a kid, id recommend giving it a try now after the 1st week when the crowds have thinned out. its no salmon river lol but more and more 10+lb rainbows have been being caught every year and fighting a fish like that in a little stream like Naples is freaking awesome.
-
Snagger, very cool! (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e322/swampstalker/SMILEYS/happy0144.gif)
-
Pretty serious fish Shane (and crew)!
-
I couldn't stand it, I had to get my stuff out again and head beak to Keuka Lake yesterday and today. Fishing was still great, plus no crowds! I managed to catch nine more lakers, and loose a few others. Half on a blue/silver/orange rattle-trap, half on a black/white/tinsel bucktail jig. Keuka Lake saved my season!!!!
-
I don't think the locals are as upset that out of towners are fishing...it's that they have to tell everyone and their brother about it and post it all over the Web for the world to see!! Fire away, you know it's the truth!! Why is it that when people go somewhere different they can put it out there, but when on their "home" water it's hush hush, blur the background in pics etc??

you make a pretty good point.

I'm probably the only guy on here posting, but on my news feed on facebook when Keuka first froze when my back was out, I had 100 pictures a week, day in and day out for 2 weeks, I bet I saw 500 pictures and reports before I finally made the trip out there.
-
you couldn't find a spoon, white tube, paddle tail or atomic fly in Pulaski, walls were sold out.. it was nuts, everyone had laker fever.

Fishing is ALWAYS great for Lakers at Keuka ................winter ,spring, summer, fall !! The problem is it doesn't always freeze , especially the Branchport arm !! I hope all the Perch fisherman from Seneca move their boats over to Keuka and get into the Laker fever !!!!! You can jig them up open water easier than thru the ice !!! Most of the 100's of pictures Snag saw were from the same guys !!
-
On skinny I drop shot a white Berkley minnow with a 3oz sinker in 120' As soon as it hits the bottom they are on. Not many big dogs yet but searching more every summer. Can mark fish 30 feet thick on the bottom some days. Most likely the same on most of the finger lakes. I always wonder why guys are trolling for them when you can mark them on a graph and drop right down. Great for first time people and kids. 7' medium rod with 6lb braid.

Say what? Snagger posts his home waters(oneida/SR) more than anything, countless pics from Oneida walleye fishing, countless SR steelhead/salmon pics.
C'mon >:(

Couple of guys PM'ed me regarding the kayak fishing, figured I'd post some info here for all to see.
I'm using a Old Town Camden 120 sit-in style kayak. It's 12 ft long, and handles the lakes pretty well and keeps me pretty dry. My legs can get a bit warm if I'm in the sun all day, but nothing that's unbearable. I been out a few time when the wind kicked up and it got a bit hairy getting back to my launch site, but never had to ditch it. Also always wear a PFD when I'm solo; when with others, it's in the yak, but not necessarily on me.
I've got a humminbird 597 mounted in the yak that runs off game camera battery I stuff behind the seat, and have no problem seeing a 1 oz ball head jig in 180+ FOW
Started out using short Ice Blue heavy's for rods, but found out that you can't always get the line around the bow if the fish gets turned around on ya. Last year I switched up to a Bass Pro 7ft brawler with a baitcaster reel, and found it works better to get the fish moved around the yak. Landing 'em is a bit harder with the longer rod, and I'm not really sure if it's better to just reach down and lift from the gill plate, or use the landing net.
I do have an 18" drift sock that I tie off to the anchor trolly to help slow down the drift... I usually try to jig at first or last light when the winds are calm, so that also helps with both the wind and wake from motor boats. If drifting a lot, I try to cast out ahead of my drift so that when the jig hits bottom, I'm pretty close to being right on top of it. I also carry a folding anchor with 250 ft of line, but I've never used it in anything deeper then ~80 FOW.
As far as drifting / paddling / jigging, it's actually not that hard once you get the hang of it... I can use 1 hand to run the paddle to adjust the yak's drift, and if I get a fish, I just lay the paddle across the boat until I'm ready to land it. I also keep the paddle on a leash, so it does go overboard it's not gonna get too far away from me.
Besides jigging lakers, I'll also pull a cow bell with a spin & glow or a 3-way with a 8-16 oz weight along the bottom. I'm also planning on trying for browns using floating raps and spoons on 3 -4 colors of lead once the ice is out.
I bounce around from Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Canadice, Hemlock and the Erie canal. If anyone has other questions, fell free to message me.

pretty cool rig JJBat, my back couldn't handle that thing, usually by noon I'm laying on the ice in extreme pain just from sitting too long....

That is friggin awesome right there ;D
What is the biggest fish of any species you have landed on it?
I can't help but think of a 30 pound striper towing me all over the Hudson :o

Its all good man, don't sweat it, I'm having a blast with new sport, aint no one gonna get me down, all smiles brother.

I was thinking of making the hour and 40 min drive to Branchport tomorrow providing the shore ice is still good??? If you don't get a report for Penn Yan and we get one for Branchport that's ok, you are MORE than welcome to join me out on the laker waters Jeff

has anyone checked the ice today at branch port today? I was watching the webcam and I seen a black hut there today,
-
I was there yesterday until about 1
Shore ice was getting soft but the plank was still working to get on & off
Bring the spud and picks Ice was still 22 cranks on the nils so about 10inches out in the middle
I spudded my way down to the blue house then across
Didn't encounter any bad areas. Just reporting what I encountered yesterday. Not saying it's definitely safe but using precautions I was ok.
Fishing was good and had the whole area out of branch port to myself
Also could hear the water coming into the lake so definitely give runoff areas a wide birth
Good luck anyone who goes and stay safe

The guys from kayak fishing stuff.com used to have a striper rodeo every spring on the hudson. Not sure how active the site is these days. Kayaks are great fishing.
