Title: Warning about Moosehead
Post by: Downeaster on Apr 16, 2014, 04:33 PM
We all know how thin the ice is in southern Maine, but how about Moosehead.  Well, my friend who
lives in Greenville and has a camp on Sugar island, told me that today, he decided to walk out to the
camp believing there was plenty of ice.  He anticipate 20 inches anyway between Lilly bay state park
and his camp on Sugar isl.  He walked slowly stomping and checking the ice with a stick without a
reaction, then when he got out near the channel, down he went.  He managed to get his arms out
and stop from going completely through.  On his first attempt to get out it didn't happen, but on
his second, he managed to roll onto the ice.  He quickly beat feet out of there back to his truck in
the park.  He is ok, but this scared him.  I think he is a lucky boy.  Just show how you can feel the
ice is safe, but it isn't.

Glad he is safe but NO ONE should think the ice is safe anywhere right now, be very careful if venturing out on the ice

I know firsthand how dangerous and deceiving ice thickness can be.......I went through about 10inches a couple years ago. :o

Glad to hear your buddy is ok ........

I am happy he is ok as well.  I always worry about him, as he assumes too often that everything will be ok.
He got a scare today.

Spring holes can be everywhere, narrow channels pressure ridges are another place of caution.  The sun is very hot even though the wind is cold. danger is all around.

that's pretty ignorant seeing how he lives and has a camp there and what not. Sounds like something a flatlander would do. Hope he learned something.  Glad he didn't make the news. @)

Actually I have seen it a lot of times, when I would never venture onto what I consider bad ice..  Then
you look and see ice fishermen out there.  I guess its what some believe is safe.

It's always safe until the one step when you fall through. To each their own, I guess.
Glad this one turned out okay.

Pretty sure Rude was referring to Bushwacka, for his comment! (Sump'in a Mainah did) :-\

BTW Rude, I agree, only a transplant would say that! ;D ;)
