Filling 1# Propane Tanks
« on: Mar 07, 2009, 08:57 PM »
I've been refilling 1lb. cylinders all winter in my kitchen and I have all of my extremities.  They are NOT DANGEROUS if your careful!

I refill everyone I possible can - even the ones people leave on the ice - they go home with me...

I have the brass adapter for the 20lb tank to refill the 1lbers

the trick is to freeze the small tanks and keep the big tank warm. Attach the small tank (I hold the big tank upside down to fill) and turn on the valve until it's full, usually about 20 seconds

you will have a little gas release after you have closed the big tank valve and unscrewed the small tank - good fart smell for the area you're in...lol   ;D

For some real fun, duct tape a flare to a full tank, then shoot it. Seen it in the remake of Dawn of the Dead. A 20 pounder will wipe out a couple hundred zombies.

all ya have to do is follow the directions that are provided with the filling adapter and its as safe as filling anything else thats refillable.  just have to use common sense is all.

How do you know when they are full!

when ya quit hearing the hisssing sound its making while its filling the tank

for the most part it takes just 20-30 seconds for it to fill up, unless the tank isnt chilled first. then it can take a few times of trying to fil it to get it full.

How many refills do you normally get before the seal goes bad, on the one pounders?? I'm debating on getting a refill adapter. Thank you for your time.

Don't know, I have yet to have a seal fail, and I've filled some of mine five or six times.

Just filled six of mine.  With the two new ones left over from last year, I'm good to go for a while.

I'm definitely getting the adapter now, I've filled co2 bottle for years now for paintball. so I'm sure I can handle some propane bottles. It's funny because when you were saying to freeze the propane bottles that is exactly what I do for the co2 bottles. Thanks for the reply, it's nice to have people who help other people, that is why I love Iceshanty Aright all get ready cause winter is coming.. tight lines, Mooks

I like the idea of refilling to save money. However I have a question about the propane. Most people claim you need a filter in the gas line when you are using a bulk tank to catch the impurities found in the bulk gas. It has been said the 1lb tanks are already filtered. So now we are putting unfiltered gas in the small bottles. Is this asking for trouble down the road in the form of clogged burners in our Buddy heaters?

The gas in the 20 pounders that most of us use to fill them with would have been filtered when they were filled from the bulk tank.

The bulk gas I was talking about was the 20 pound tank. Some folks said you needed an in-line filter to use a 20 with a Mr.Heater Buddy instead of just the plain hose because of the impurities.
