Lure weight for ML SC premier/other advice
« on: Dec 07, 2011, 07:40 PM »
Hey guys, i'm trying to build my perfect ice casual ice arsenal. So I have a couple questions, and any help would be great. Sorry if this drags on, and is filled with spelling errors.  ;)

Just recently bought a 28' ML SC Premier, just wondering if anyone knows what weight lures is recommended  for it. I bought it mainly for jigging small pimples (size 2 1/10 oz). I thought the ML would be the perfect middle ground so i could also toss small jigs, now after doing some more researching i'm not sure if should have gotten a Medium. I know the medium might be to stiff for small jigs, but since i mainly use pimples and other small spoons, should I  have went with that?

Im a casual ice guy, so I like keeping my gear simple. I usually just bring 2 rods. I have a panfish popper for small jigs, and now my ML for small spoons, and jigs like bigger sized demons. So i might just buy another Premier in Medium since the price isn't bad at $20.

So then I would have

Panfish Popper for small jigs
ML premier for pimples/jigs
M for heavier jigs if im ever targeting something larger

does this make sense?
 ???  ???

It will run lures up to 1/4 oz fine.  Depending on lure type but it's more suited to 1/8th oz.

to be honest, i'm not that smart, and I'm really bad at math, so are you saying 1/10th oz is too small? or that 1/8th is the heaviest I should go?  ;D

LOL, I used it for lures as light as 1/64th oz myself or as heavy as 1/4th oz.  I prefer to use lures of 1/32nd to 1/8th oz on it.  So your 1/10th oz is just fine.

The medium St. Croix is quite stiff.  I've used it mainly for lures from 1/4 oz. to up to 3/4 oz.

The ML is perfect for jigging the 1/10 pimples.  The M would be overkill for most panfish applications, although it is a great rod for deep water or gamefish..

Thanks guys, looks like I made the right choice. For $20 bucks I might buy the M as well, and use that as my big game rod, although in central jersey there are not many big game fish.  ;D

thanks again guys.
