you shouldn't need a leader or anything for these.. no expensive jigs b/c the swallow the bait.. put a good sinker on your line and a hook set anything on the bottom really and wait..
fresh fish works best i think

live bait esp. smelt works better than dead. i clip the tail on it so the cusk can get it easier. no more than a ft. off bottom.

When you guys say right on the bottom do you mean 1' off the bottom or have your bait lying right on the bottom?

What kind of bait works best? Live or dead? I have heard dead suckers cut open but I have never tried fishing for Burbot. I plan on going up to Sebago lake in Maine next week and would like to target some. Any info I can get would be real helpfull.

Thanks PK

I have heard they aren't too picky but from what i gather sucker and smelt are the best, but as long as they're biting than they hit most any fish as long as it's fresh.

a 10# pout fights like a 20# pike.  They don't have teeth, so you don't need steel, but I wouldn't run less than a 10# mono leader for them.  They have a flip top head, so you aren't going to find many jigs they can't handle.  I have had a #7n pimple (2 3/4") with a fat head on a rod and had a 2# pout hammer it, taking the hook and minnow and another 3" of line into it's mouth.  I have actually used saltwater jigs when fishing them.  You don't want a hook with a lot of flex in it.

Thanks for the info, should I hide the hook into the bait real good or does it even matter cause I heard that they just swallow it any ways.
