big bait tip up mod
« on: Feb 12, 2021, 04:38 AM »
few days ago i read a thread on this topic.  got me rethinking thinking my downrigger release setup i have been using for years, for big baits, on my polars.

the first thing i made works great and sets the hook in the lip every time to boot!  all was good on the test trip.  many bass caught with the gills for bait. no false flags even with a 5"er.  the concern was line getting wrapped on spool because it was held above it on the shaft.

nothing but wire and a zip tie. light setting when slid down tight setting if its slid up as shown.

you can see where it mite be a tangle issue even though it wasnt.

so this morning i was looking at it and pondering how i get that clip under the spool. and this is what i came up with.

seems to hold pretty good.  anxious to test it out today.

any input of your thoughts appreciated.

tossed up a quick vid on my utube------>

or the low profile model hot off the line. lmao

just tuck dacron in there.  guessing it holds 3-4#?

after some testing:  this smaller more horizontal clip isnt as good as the vertical one in the first pics i posted.  they can pull backward creating a non release situation

Rubber band works good
Wrap it around the wood above the reel and the just tuck the line under it.
Works on my heritage and jacks traps.

One guy showed me that on the t bar just to add a o-ring that just fits over the tbar and no false flags and can run baits up to 11 inches without them being able to trip the flag until a fish hits the bait.  Catfish rig.

i couldnt get very much holding power with the o-rings i had.  maybe a really fat one would work better?

yesterday i set an oversized bait on the clip and it never tripped.  after 4-5hours it was still there and kicking.  since it was a 6" gill, i tossed it in the sack to fillet. lol  next time to a pond im going to try a 12 in bass and see if that trips it.

your welcome rambo51.  hope it leads to some big bites for ya.

was at friends house this afternoon and put out a couple flags on his pond.  couldnt get a 12" bass to test but i did use a 10"er.  he couldnt trip the flag with the keeper hold.  no monster ate him so he went free to grow up.
